When does Black Friday start?

The official date for your diary is Friday November 26th, however many brands have got into the discount action already. Plenty of people are getting their shopping done early with concerns over shortages, and retailers are getting in on the act by dropping prices more than a week in advance. After Black Friday comes Cyber Monday, on November 29th.

What is Black Friday?

Traditionally, Black Friday deals were found in-store in the US, and Cyber Monday was when online deals were offered. Nowadays there isn’t much difference between the two, except new deals sometimes crop up for Cyber Monday and the week afterwards. With Black Friday starting earlier every year, it’s turning into a two-week bargain-fest. It can seem too good to be true, but most retailers save their biggest discounts for Black Friday now as opposed to the January sales of old.

Why is it called Black Friday?

According to researchers, the ominous-sounding name originates from Philadelphia in the mid-1960s. It’s linked to Thanksgiving, as American retailers had an unwritten rule that shopping for Christmas doesn’t start until after then. Black Friday always falls on the first Friday after Thanksgiving, and the floodgates opened with shops trying to attract customers with the best deals. The first recorded mentions of the name came from the irritation felt by retail workers, police and cab drivers at how busy the days were. Since then it’s come to mean “in the black” for retailers, a chance to make money.
