That concludes our commentary of the LaLiga fixture between Celta Vigo and Real Madrid! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Celta Vigo travel to face Girona on Friday, while Real Madrid have eight days before their next match, away against Espanyol.
Real Madrid show their class in the second half and run out deserved 4-1 winners against Celta Vigo, with Modric and Vinicius contributing both a goal and an assist. It took just 11 minutes after the restart for the visitors to find a third, with Vinicius latching onto the end of Modric’s accurate throughball before rounding Marchesin with ease. Much to Eduardo Coudet’s dismay his side would suffer further, with Valverde’s strike from distance beating the goalkeeper 10 minutes later. The hosts started the contest full of confidence but their play suffered as the match dragged on, with Courtois an observer in the second half. The win keeps Real Madrid perfect while Celta Vigo are still without a win.
90' + 3' The fourth official indicates four minutes will be added to the end of the 90 for stoppages.
90' + 1' Aspas finds Perez on the edge of Real Madrid’s penalty area but the forward is taken to the ground by Tchouameni, with the referee indicating that the use of force is not excessive as he allows play to continue.
89' Vazquez has scored three goals for Real Madrid in LaLiga in the 2022 calendar year, only in 2018 (4) he scored more in the competition in a calendar year – Benzema has assisted five of Vazquez’s last nine goals in the top-flight.
E. Hazard
Penalty Miss
87' It's a poor take from Hazard, who looked for the corner but failed to put anywhere near enough power behind his strike. It remains 4-1.
A. Marchesín
Penalty Save
87' MARCHSIN COMES UP BIG! Hazard steps up to take the penalty and sends it to his left but the goalkeeper reads the forward’s intentions perfectly to deny the spot-kick!
L. de la Torre
R. Tapia
87' Tapia comes off for De La Torre before Benzema's penalty can be taken.
Hugo Mallo
Yellow Card
85' PENALTY! Real Madrid earn another penalty after Benzema is ripped down to the turf by Mallo during an aggressive attempt to prevent the striker from latching on to Mendy’s pass inside the 18-yard box! It’s a spot-kick for Real Madrid and a yellow card for the Celta Vigo full-back!
E. Hazard
Vinícius Júnior
83' Hazard makes an appearance, replacing Vinicius with less than 10 minutes left.
E. Camavinga
82' Camavinga gets a rest after an impressive performance as Asensio is given a chance to stretch his legs.
81' Real Madrid will look to keep the play in front of them in the final 10 minutes, with the hard work already done. They’ll try to keep possession and force their opponents to chase shadows after a long and difficult evening.
Gabri Veiga
Óscar Rodríguez
78' Veiga comes on for Rodriguez as Coudet continues to make changes late in the game.
Dani Ceballos
L. Modrić
77' Modric is replaced with 13 minutes remaining, with Ceballos chosen to see out the game.
Lucas Vázquez
D. Alaba
77' Vazquez comes on for Alaba as Real Madrid make a change in defence.
76' Rodriguez hits a tired shot from long range that drifts harmlessly wide of Courtois’ goal.
74' Real Madrid last won their two opening LaLiga games in a single season in 2018/19 under Julen Lopetegui.
72' Perez plays a lovely one-two pass with Cervi but is unable to trouble Courtois with his shot, which is blocked cleanly by an alert Alaba.
70' Tchouameni winds up and hits a speculative effort from 35 yards that fails to trouble Marchesin.
A. Rüdiger
69' Ancelotti opts to make a switch at the same time, with Rudiger sent on for Carvajal.
Carles Pérez
Gonçalo Paciência
69' The first substitution of the game goes the way of Celta Vigo, who replace Paciencia with Perez.
D. Alaba
Yellow Card
68' Alaba's cynical foul on Aspas on the far touchline earns him a yellow card.
Vinícius Júnior
66' Vinicius, like Modric, now has an assist to add to his goal.
F. Valverde
66' VALVERDE ADDS ANOTHER! 4-1! Another Real Madrid counter leads to a goal, with Tchouameni leading the charge through midfield. He spreads it out to the left to Vinicius, who executes a trademark stepover before centring a pass across the penalty area. Benzema, who had slipped, looks to get onto the end of it but Valverde gets to the ball first and dispatches a first-time effort into the far corner!
Yellow Card
65' Carvajal is shown the second yellow card of the match for taking Paciencia’s legs out from underneath him.
64' JUST OVER! Rodriguez’s well-taken outswinging corner finds the head of Aidoo, who powers his header just above the crossbar!
62' Paciencia kicks out at Carvajal during an attempt to win the ball, giving Real Madrid a free-kick and ending Celta’s counter-press.
60' After speaking with both Aspas and Modric the referee has a word with the Real Madrid striker but instructs the match to continue with a throw-in to the visitors - with nothing coming from the brief pause in play.
58' Tapia goes over on the edge of his own penalty area after a coming-together with Benzema, which doesn’t particularly impress the France international striker. It’s drawn a pause in the match as the referee speaks with VAR as there could be repercussions for the physical nature of the duel.
L. Modrić
56' Modric adds an assist to his earlier goal, further stamping his mark on the match.
Vinícius Júnior
56' VINICIUS ADDS TO THE LEAD! 3-1! It’s another spectacular goal from Real Madrid, who hit on the counter with pace after Celta Vigo’s attack breaks down. Carvajal finds Modric in space and again the midfield maestro picks out a pass from the top shelf, playing it between the centre-backs for the streaking Vinicius. The Brazil international draws the keeper off his line and rounds him before tucking it away neatly in the empty net!
54' Benzema drifts out to the right wing in order to facilitate play, linking the midfield with the attack as he receives Modric’s pass before playing it towards the byline for Carvajal. The full-back manages to get on the end of it and put a cross into the area but it’s calmly dealt with by Marchesin.
52' Cervi puts a speculative cross to the far post under pressure from Carvajal but Mallo is unable to meet the ball or keep it in play which results in a Real Madrid throw-in.
50' Modric again puts his technical ability on full-display, using a backheel flick to keep a Real Madrid move going by finding Valverde in space. The Croatia international is at his best once again today, bringing Real Madrid along with him.
48' Mallo looks to swing a cross into the area but the disappointing delivery fails to get past Tchouameni, stationed on the corner of the penalty area.
46' Real Madrid get the match restarted from the kick-off!
Celta Vigo must continue to play with the same intensity as the first-half, catching their opponents in dangerous areas and flooding their full-backs forward in order to provide a different angle of delivery. The left-footed Perez could be an option in the second half, as is Solari. Real Madrid will look to keep things tight and perhaps nick a bit of insurance on the counter-attack, while rotating their midfield to help in the absence of Casemiro.
The first-half at the Abanca-Balaidos comes to a close with Real Madrid ahead by two goals to one, thanks to Modric’s stunning curler four minutes before the interval. Despite looking the better side to start the match, the hosts would go behind early after Tapia’s hand was deemed to have blocked Alaba’s close-range strike. Benzema would make no mistake from 12-yards out, beating Marchesin low to his left but the lead would last for just nine minutes, with Paciencia winning a penalty for his side after forcing Militao into a handball of his own. Aspas dispatched his spot-kick and levelled up proceedings but it was not to remain, with Modric taking the game by the scruff of the neck with four minutes remaining, beating Marchesin with an exceptional shot from distance to put the title-holders ahead.
45' The fourth official indicates two minutes will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
43' Celta Vigo will feel unlucky to be behind after a good first half but often times all it takes is a bit of magic to separate two teams - with Modric's effort undoubtedly falling in that category. There's still all to play for but it's advantage to the visitors!
L. Modrić
42' A SUBLIME GOAL FROM MODRIC MAKES IT 2-1! INCREDIBLE! It’s a sensational goal from the Croatia captain, who receives a pass from Alaba before cutting inside and curling a delightful shot into the top corner - leaving Marchesin rooted to the spot!
D. Alaba
42' Alaba gets on the score sheet again this week, providing an assist for Modric's goal.
39' Valverde skews a set-piece routine, leaving Ancelotti shaking his head in dismay. It looked as though the Uruguay international was trying to hit a floated cross to the edge of the box for Modric but instead put it directly out for a Celta Viga throw on the other side of the pitch.
37' Celta Vigo have failed to win any of their last 16 games against Real Madrid in LaLiga (D2 L14), since a 2-0 win in May 2014 – this is their longest winless run against them in the top-flight.
35' ALMOST! Celta Vigo work the ball beautifully from right to left for Galan, who has the time and space on the left flank to pick Paciencia out with a cross. The delivery is inch-perfect but the striker is only able to put his header the wrong side of the post!
33' CLOSE! Valverde is caught in possession 20 yards from his own goal after a heavy touch takes him into the path of Cervi, who takes a touch and hammers a shot that whistles wide!
31' Mallo receives possession and picks his head up in order to find Paciencia but a clever sliding challenge from Camavinga wins possession back in a key area for Real Madrid.
29' Galan drives forward from his position at full-back, twisting and turning to confuse Carvajal before hitting a shot that sails wide of the goal.
27' Mendy receives the ball in space on the left flank but Benzema is unable to beat Aidoo in the air, with the Celta defender getting two headers to the ball before it’s cleared outside the penalty area.
25' Modric hooks a free-kick into Celta Vigo’s penalty area from the left but the delivery - hit in search of Camavinga - is cleared away by the industrious Aspas.
Iago Aspas
Penalty Goal
23' CELTA VIGO ANSWER BACK! 1-1! Aspas' long, winding run-up fails to put off Courtois, who guesses correctly but is unable to palm it away. It's a low shot hit with venom and it gets the hosts back on level footing!
23' PENALTY TO CELTA VIGO! It’s another handball, with Militao the culprit this time. Paciencia went up with the centre-back in order to win the header, nodding it right into the outstretched arm of the Brazil international!
22' Militao charges through the back of Aspas right under the nose of the referee, who is given no other option but to blow his whistle and award Celta Vigo a free-kick in midfield.
20' Cervi charges towards the 18-yard box and looks to slip a pass through the lines but Tchouameni and Alaba combine to squeeze the space and deny the Celta Vigo forward an opportunity to get onto the ball.
18' Vinicius gets forward and attempts to play a one-two with Mendy before executing a roulette to get past Mallo but the veteran full-back uses all his experience to shepherd the ball out for a goal-kick.
16' Tapia and Mallo are in furious conversation with the referee but the replay does Celta Vigo no favours as Mallo’s outstretched arm clearly blocked the ball, allowing Aidoo to clear his lines. The hosts started very well but they’ll now have to dig themselves out of a hole if they wish to get something from the match.
K. Benzema
Penalty Goal
14' NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! 1-0! Benzema steps up and calmly rolls his penalty into the bottom-right corner, sending Marchesin the wrong way in the process!
R. Tapia
Yellow Card
13' PENALTY! The referee takes a minute to watch a replay of the incident before coming back onto the pitch and pointing to the spot! It’s a spot-kick for Real Madrid, while Tapia is shown a yellow card for handball.
12' There is a VAR check in the aftermath of the corner-kick, as Alaba’s hooked shot towards goal looks to have taken a touch off the hand of Tapia, which helped Celta Vigo clear their lines.
11' Modric’s corner from the right is hit looking for Tchouameni’s run towards the penalty spot but Aidoo does enough to put off the Real Madrid midfielder before Alaba's follow-up effort is blocked - allowing Marchesin to gather.
9' The hosts are finding joy down the right-hand side in the early stages, with Cervi and Mallo combining well to free up space for Aspas and the imposing Paciencia. Mendy and Alaba will certainly have their defensive work cut out for them.
7' Rodriguez takes a corner from the right looking for a team-mate at the near post but Carvajal is well placed to clear the ball away with his head.
5' Valverde works a bit of space on the right wing and fires a strike towards goal but the effort sails high and wide of the target.
4' Rodriguez hits the free-kick looking to catch Courtois at his near post but the goalkeeper gets over to his right and makes a clean catch.
3' An inexplicably lax pass out of the back from Carvajal allows Rodriguez to win possession easily, before Paciencia is fouled 20 yards from goal.

Real Madrid righted the ship in the second half after conceding a sixth-minute goal against Almeria, with David Alaba’s free-kick winning Los Blancos the three points with a quarter-hour left. Having beaten Celta Vigo in their last three meetings, Carlo Ancelotti will be expecting to make it two wins on the bounce to start the campaign.
Celta Vigo frittered away a two-goal lead to earn a 2-2 draw with Espanyol at home in the first game of the season, with Iago Aspas again scoring for the Galician club. Their task gets even harder this week, welcoming Real Madrid to the Abanca-Balaidos - where they haven’t beaten the Merengues since 2014.
