GOAL in conjunction with Coca Cola predicts the final standing of the three-time African champions in Group D and opponents they could face in the Round of 16

  • Nigeria, Super Eagles

Where will Nigeria finish in Group D?

The Super Eagles stand a strong chance of finishing their group at the top of the table after securing back-to-back wins which gave them six points after two matches.

They have the highest goal difference (+3) in Group D and they lead second-placed Egypt by three points.

A draw against Guinea-Bissau in their last group fixture is enough for Eguavoen's men to seal top spot. Even if they lose their last group fixture and Egypt win by several goals against Sudan, the Super Eagles will progress as group winners as the first tie-breaker criteria is head-to-head, rather than goal difference.

According to the tournament format and with their current position in Group D, Nigeria will face the third-best team from one of Group B, Group E or Group F.

  • Malawi celebrate Afcon 2022

Who could Nigeria face in Round of 16? - Malawi

With Zimbabwe already eliminated after two straight defeats, Malawi currently sit third in Group B with three points from two games.

They suffered a 1-0 loss against Guinea in their opening match but beat Zimbabwe in their second match but will likely have to take a point off Senegal in their final group fixture on January 18 to secure a best third placed finish and face the Super Eagles in the Round of 16.

  • Osman Kakay and Yacine Brahimi in Algeria vs Sierra Leone

Who could Nigeria face in Round of 16? - Sierra Leone

The Leone Stars currently sit third in Group E, on two points after successive draws in their two group matches so far.

However, this group was thrown into disarray after Algeria's shock loss to Equitorial Guinea on Sunday night, leaving The Foxes rooted to the foot of the table.

With only three points separating Ivory Coast at the top of the table and Algeria at the bottom on one point, any one of Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, Sierra Leone or Algeria could emerge on the last day as third-placed opponents for the Super Eagles.

  • Tunisia Afcon 2021.

Who could Nigeria face in Round of 16? - Tunisia

Tunisia are currently third in Group F after mauling Mauritania 4-0 in their second game on Sunday and getting their Afcon campaign on track after a disappointing 1-0 loss to the Gambia on January 12.

Mauritania have lost both their matches and are unlikely to pose Mali any problems in their final group match. That leaves Gambia vs Tunisia battling it out for for the second and third place spots in Group F and a potential Round of 16 against Nigeria.

  • Gabon Afcon 2022

    Quarter-final permutation

The runner-up in Group A [likely Burkina Faso or Cape Verde] is scheduled to face the runner-up in Group C [likely either Gabon or Ghana] for the first Round of 16 fixture on January 23. Should Nigeria advance into the last-eight, the winner of the first round of 16 games will face them in Garoua on January 29.
