With the draw for the last 16 now confirmed, GOAL runs down the most likely contenders to lift the European Cup in Istanbul.

"The Champioooooooooons!" Even if you don't know every word, you definitely know the final two. Iconic. Over the past two months, it has been blaring out around stadiums across Europe during the Champions League group stages, and we're gutted we won't get to hear it again for another three months.

That is when the knockout stages will begin, with defending champions Real Madrid joined by the other remaining 15 teams to battle it out for the European Cup.

So, after Monday's last-16 draw, which teams now look most likely to triumph when the Champions League returns in February?

GOAL's Power Rankings break it all down...

(Last update: November 3)

  • Eintracht Frankfurt UCL Rankings

    #16 Eintracht Frankfurt

    Last time: 16th

The only team to be making their debut in the Champions League knockouts this season, Eintracht have been given the unenviable task of working out a way to stop Napoli after drawing the Serie A leaders in the last 16.

The Europa League champions have pulled off many shocks over the past 12 months or so, but this one might be beyond even them.

  • RB Leipzig UCL Rankings

    #15 RB Leipzig

    Last time: 14th

Leipzig's reward for winning four successive Champions League matches for the first time in their history? A last-16 tie against Manchester City.

Marco Rose's team did beat Real Madrid in the group stages, but we don't expect them to take down the English champions in 2023.

  • Club Brugge UCL Rankings

    #14 Club Brugge

    Last time: 15th

Of all the group winners they could have drawn, Club Brugge might feel that Benfica are the least daunting, and so are likely to be content with their draw.

That said, they remain one of the more talent-deficient sides left in the competition, and it is tough to see them reaching the quarter-finals.

  • Porto UCL Rankings

    #13 Porto

    Last time: 13th

Porto's late push to finish top of their group helped them avoid any of the tournament favourites, but beating an Inter side that has already knocked out Barcelona and could have Romelu Lukaku back in 2023 is still a stern test.

It is one that Sergio Conceicao's team are equipped to take on, but they will likely kick-off the tie as underdogs.

  • Borussia Dortmund UCL Rankings

    #12 Borussia Dortmund

    Last time: 10th

It looks one of the most evenly-matched ties on paper based on current form, and Dortmund will fancy their chances of upsetting Chelsea in the new year.

If they do, then it could yet lead to the Blues going all out to sign Jude Bellingham in the months that follow.

  • AC Milan UCL Rankings

    #11 AC Milan

    Last time: 12th

Milan might not have fared too well against English opposition in the group stages, but they will relish the chance to take down Antonio Conte and Tottenham in the last 16.

Knocking the former Inter and Juventus boss out of the Champions League would go down very well with the Rossoneri faithful, and is not beyond the realms of possibility either.

  • Tottenham UCL Rankings

    #10 Tottenham

    Last time: 11th

Spurs scraped through the group stages, and there are some who believe that Antonio Conte might not even be in charge come the knockout rounds if their current form persists.

The Italian coach will hope that he will have some January signings and more of his key players back fit and available by the time Tottenham take on AC Milan in 2023.

  • Inter UCL Rankings

    #9 Inter

    Last time: 9th

Inter will be pretty satisfied with the way the draw panned out, with Porto one of the weaker group winners on paper.

Simone Inzaghi's side still lack consistency, but having already turfed Barcelona out of the competition, they will fancy their chances against the Portuguese champions.

  • Chelsea UCL Rankings

    #8 Chelsea

    Last time: 7th

Chelsea may well be a very different animal by the times the knockout rounds kick-off, but right now, it is difficult to get a handle on Graham Potter's side.

The same could be said of their last-16 opponents, Borussia Dortmund, though, and so we could be set for a fantastic tie.

  • Benfica UCL Rankings

    #7 Benfica

    Last time: 8th

The power of playing right to the end of the group stages can be seen perfectly in Benfica's fate, as their last-gasp bid to finish as a group winner helped them draw tournament minnows Club Brugge.

Meanwhile PSG, who they leapfrogged in such dramatic fashion on matchday six, will face Bayern Munich...

  • Liverpool UCL Rankings

    #6 Liverpool

    Last time: 5th

Will Liverpool still be this inconsistent in 2023? Jurgen Klopp will hope not, otherwise their last-16 tie with Real Madrid could be pretty one-sided.

The Reds will be out for revenge after losing three times to Los Blancos (including two final defeats) in recent years, but right now few would back them to pull it off.

  • PSG UCL Rankings

    #5 Paris Saint-Germain

    Last time: 4th

This past week could barely have gone worse for PSG's hopes of finally breaking their Champions League duck, as they almost inexplicably failed to finish top of their group before then drawing Bayern Munich in the last 16.

Christophe Galtier does have the French champions playing better this season than they have done in previous years, but are we now set for another disappointingly early exit for Neymar, Messi and Mbappe?

  • Napoli UCL Rankings

    #4 Napoli

    Last time: 6th

The top scorers in the group stages, Napoli have looked almost unstoppable so far this season, and now a place in the quarter-finals feels like it is theirs for the taking after drawing Eintracht Frankfurt.

The only thing stopping them could be the potential momentum-killer that is the upcoming World Cup break. If they can pick up where they leave off in Naples, though, then they should be considered true European challengers.

  • Bayern Munich UCL Rankings

    #3 Bayern Munich

    Last time: 2nd

Bayern must think that they have done something to upset UEFA given their Champions League draws this season.

The German champions were in the 'Group of Death' with Barcelona and Inter, and still managed win all six games, only to then be paired with PSG in the last 16.

Come through out and there will be some that begin to consider them as favourites to win the whole thing.

  • Real Madrid UCL Rankings

    #2 Real Madrid

    Last time: 3rd

If Madrid were to hand-pick their last-16 opponent, then Liverpool would not have been who they would have chosen, though they do now have an opportunity to remove one potential challenger for their crown from the mix before spring has sprung.

Going to Anfield will not be easy, regardless of the form Liverpool are in by then, but having the second leg at Santiago Bernabeu has the potential to be just as big an advantage for the defending champions.

  • Manchester City UCL Rankings

    #1 Manchester City

    Last time: 1st

What a draw for City! Not only were they paired with RB Leipzig, a side they recent memories of beating handily, but then they sat back and saw the other main challengers draw one another.

If Pep Guardiola had a cigar handy in his office at the Etihad Campus, he would have been forgiven for lighting it up as he watched events unfold in Nyon.
