Rangers had been on a four-game winning run before they were bested in Leipzig by the German side in the first leg of the semi-final.
They were unable to claw their way back into the Premiership title race at the weekend, as they played out a 1-1 draw with Celtic.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst's team are still in contention for a trophy double, however, as the deficit against Leipzig is not insurmountable and they will compete in the Scottish Cup final.
Leipzig, who are also looking to secure two trophies this season, were beaten by Borussia Monchengladbach at the weekend.
That result has put their hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League through their Bundesliga position in doubt, so Europa League success could turn out to be their only route into the competition.
