Newcastle's players carry out a lap of honour as the party begins on Tyneside. The Magpies will face either Manchester United or Nottingham Forest – likely the Red Devils after their own 3-0 first-leg win – in next month's EFL Cup final. Newcastle were good value for their second-leg win, limiting Southampton largely to long-range efforts and taking advantage of their flying start. Their hopes of ending a 68-year major trophy drought are still alive!
The full-time whistle is blown, and St James' Park erupts! Newcastle United have reached their first cup final since 1999! Longstaff was the hero in the second leg, striking twice in the first 21 minutes to build on Joelinton's first-leg winner. Southampton improved massively after Adams made it 2-1, and the hosts were made to see out the closing exchanges a man down after Guimaraes was shown a straight red card. Howe's solid rearguard stood firm, however, and Newcastle are heading to Wembley!

90' + 8' Bree slices a dreadful cross behind for a goal-kick. There must be a few minutes of stoppage time remaining, but Southampton surely don't have a heroic comeback in them. They have been poor in the final third for long periods here.

90' + 2' Bree's cross comes off Burn and behind for a corner. Southampton need a goal now if they are to have time to level it up on aggregate, and Bazunu is up!
90' A groan is heard around St James' Park as that additional period is confirmed. Newcastle have Southampton where they want them for now, however, with Joelinton shielding the ball near the corner.
89' We're about to enter a minimum of seven minutes of stoppage time. That will no doubt be a boost for Southampton, but they need to find something special to deny Newcastle their second EFL Cup final appearance!

72' Huge chance for Southampton! Lavia lifts a terrific ball in behind for Armstrong, but the former Newcastle man declines the chance to round Pope, and sees his chipped effort pushed away. Newcastle were waiting for a flag which never came, and they have Pope to thank for maintaining their two-goal aggregate lead!
70' Guimaraes grabs the ball after being tugged back by Salisu, but the referee penalises the Newcastle man for handball. Ward-Prowse whips the free-kick into the box… but Bednarek commits a foul.
68' Though Southampton started the second half by retaining possession and pushing the hosts back, things have gone a little flat for them in recent minutes. That suits Newcastle, but it surely won't be long before Jones considers using his final two changes.
66' Now Edozie is forced into some defensive work as Saint-Maximin runs at him for the first time. The French winger's touch is poor, however, and the Southampton man can muscle him off the ball.
65' Edozie sees his right-wing cross blocked by Burn, as the ball spins off the corner flag and away for a throw to Southampton.

Newcastle looked to be cruising into their first EFL Cup final since 1976 after pinning Saints back early on, with the midfield trio of Longstaff, Guimaraes and Willock dominating proceedings. However, the visitors have improved since Adams struck against the run of play, and it's hard to see a scenario in which the goalmouth entertainment doesn't continue after the break!
We're halfway through this second leg, and three quarters of the way through the semi-final tie! Newcastle lead Southampton 2-1, 3-1 on aggregate, after Longstaff capped their flying start with an early double, tucking a low finish beyond Bazunu for his first before doubling up from Almiron's cut-back. However, Adams' stunning long-range finish halved the arrears after 29 minutes, and this tie may not be over just yet.

45' + 3' Trippier's free-kick runs long before Schar's second delivery is cleared away. That will be that for the opening period.
45' + 2' Salisu volleys the ball away in the left-back position, but his high boot almost catches Almiron in the head, leading to an audible groan and a wide free-kick for the hosts.
45' We're into three added minutes at the end of the first half. This has been an exceptionally entertaining game so far, and Adams' goal leaves it well poised.
44' Bree darts forward on the right before attempting to find Armstrong with a low cross. The striker's heavy touch runs through to Pope, and he will be frustrated with his failure to get a shot away.

29' GOAL! WHAT A STRIKE FROM ADAMS, AND IT'S 2-1 OUT OF NOWHERE! Willock concedes possession cheaply inside his own half, and Adams picks out the bottom-left corner with an outstanding low drive from 25 yards out. Southampton have hardly posed any threat so far, but they are back within two goals.
28' The play is halted as Joelinton receives treatment following a challenge in midfield. The Brazilian is quickly back to his feet, however, and is able to re-enter the action.
26' Sean Longstaff scored more goals in the opening 21 minutes of this game (two) than he did in his first 60 appearances for Newcastle at St James' Park combined (one). It's been a dream outing for the homegrown midfielder so far.
25' Longstaff tries to pick out Wilson in behind, but slightly overhits his pass. Having spurned a decent opportunity shortly after his opener, the midfielder could easily have had a semi-final hat-trick!
23' Southampton need a rethink – their change of shape just hasn't worked. Willock and Joelinton have already got plenty of joy on the left, and Newcastle look hungry for more goals.

21' Almiron gets the assist after finishing a flowing move by picking out Longstaff 12 yards out. The goal owed much to Joelinton and Willock, however, with Southampton unable to cope with that duo so far.

21' GOAAAAALLL! IT'S LONGSTAFF AT THE DOUBLE, AND NEWCASTLE ARE SURELY GOING THROUGH! Newcastle carve Southampton apart with ease as Joelinton picks out Willock on the left wing. Willock charges infield before finding Almiron with a neat reverse pass, and his cut-back is drilled home by Longstaff! 2-0 to Newcastle at St James' Park, 3-0 on aggregate, and the Toon look Wembley-bound!
18' Southampton finally get a touch inside Newcastle's area as Armstrong peels to the left to find Walker-Peters on the overlap. His cross is cleared by Burn, however, before Diallo eases the pressure by fouling Guimaraes.
16' Almiron almost latches onto a clever ball in behind from Trippier, but Bazunu is sharp enough to collect it at the forward's feet!
15' Southampton win a free-kick inside Newcastle's half as Burn fouls Ward-Prowse. The visitors need to enjoy a spell in possession and calm things down.
14' Southampton were already looking to become only the third team to qualify for an EFL Cup final after losing the first leg at home, along with Stoke City (v West Ham) in 1971-72 and Arsenal (v Tottenham) in 1986-87. Their task looks much more daunting after Newcastle's excellent start.
12' Schar attacks the corner at the front post, but Bazunu gets a touch to his header to divert it behind. The Southampton goalkeeper then punches away the next set-piece, and Almiron fires a volley well over the crossbar.
11' Joelinton shrugs off Lyanco in the left-hand channel before seeing a shot deflect off Bednarek and away for a corner. The hosts keep coming…
9' Newcastle have come flying out of the traps here, and Southampton need two goals to level the tie up! Jones' men have barely escaped their half so far, and they could easily be further behind already.
7' SO CLOSE TO 2-0! Longstaff almost has a dream double within eight minutes! The midfielder takes a fine touch inside from the right to beat two men, before flashing a left-footed volley narrowly wide of the bottom-right corner!

5' Trippier is credited with the assist after cutting inside to find Longstaff inside the penalty area. The England man did brilliantly there, though Armstrong's failure to track the run of Longstaff has cost Saints!

5' GOAAALLL! NEWCASTLE LEAD THROUGH LONGSTAFF! Southampton have been unable to get out so far, and they have a mountain to climb now! Guimaraes beats two in midfield with a fine piece of skill before finding Trippier. The right-back cuts inside and finds Longstaff, who hits a low strike beyond Bazunu and into the bottom-left corner! It's 1-0 to Newcastle here, and 2-0 on aggregate!
3' First half-chance for the hosts! Schar carries the ball forward from defence before slipping a pass into Longstaff's path. His cut-back is turned behind by Wilson, who was under pressure from Salisu.

Holding a 1-0 first-leg advantage, Newcastle are looking to reach their first major cup final since 1999, when they lost 2-0 to Manchester United in the FA Cup. Their last EFL Cup final appearance was in 1976. Should they qualify, it would be the biggest gap between final appearances (47 years), breaking the record of 38 years set by Birmingham City (1963-2001), Manchester City (1976-2014) and Southampton (1979-2017).
Visiting boss Nathan Jones made a raft of changes for Saturday's 2-1 FA Cup win against Blackpool, but this team has a more familiar look. Southampton's team shows four changes from the first leg, with Bednarek, Bree, Adams and Armstrong introduced. The latter duo are expected to form a front two in a 3-5-2, with Southampton needing to win the game to have any chance of progressing.
Having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle have had a full week to prepare for this game, and Howe names an unchanged side to the one which beat Saints 1-0 on the road in the first leg. Joelinton joins Wilson and Almiron in the front three after netting the winner in that game, while their solid backline is seeking a ninth consecutive home clean sheet.

Is this the season where Newcastle end a 68-year wait to win a major domestic trophy? There have been plenty of false dawns for the Magpies since their 1955 FA Cup triumph, but Eddie Howe's men have one foot in next month's EFL Cup final after Joelinton fired them to a 1-0 win at St Mary's Stadium last week. However, Southampton – beaten finalists in 1979 and 2017 – are still in the tie, and Adam Armstrong's late disallowed strike in the first leg showed they can threaten the Toon.
