Commentary

We hope you have enjoyed our coverage of this lively EFL Cup semi-final second leg! Thank you for joining us, we'll see you next time.
Newcastle's players carry out a lap of honour as the party begins on Tyneside. The Magpies will face either Manchester United or Nottingham Forest – likely the Red Devils after their own 3-0 first-leg win – in next month's EFL Cup final. Newcastle were good value for their second-leg win, limiting Southampton largely to long-range efforts and taking advantage of their flying start. Their hopes of ending a 68-year major trophy drought are still alive!
The full-time whistle is blown, and St James' Park erupts! Newcastle United have reached their first cup final since 1999! Longstaff was the hero in the second leg, striking twice in the first 21 minutes to build on Joelinton's first-leg winner. Southampton improved massively after Adams made it 2-1, and the hosts were made to see out the closing exchanges a man down after Guimaraes was shown a straight red card. Howe's solid rearguard stood firm, however, and Newcastle are heading to Wembley!
90' + 11' FULL-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 2-1 SOUTHAMPTON
90' + 10' The home fans are singing about being Wembley-bound as Pope punches a cross clear under pressure. Adams sees a long-range strike blocked, and the Magpies win a throw-in. The hosts are nearly there!
90' + 8' Bree slices a dreadful cross behind for a goal-kick. There must be a few minutes of stoppage time remaining, but Southampton surely don't have a heroic comeback in them. They have been poor in the final third for long periods here.
E. Anderson
J. Murphy
90' + 7' Anderson enters the action as Newcastle make another change. Murphy, himself introduced from the bench earlier this half, makes way.
90' + 6' GOOD CHANCE! Southampton may feel they should be back in it! Ward-Prowse drives a clever low ball into Lavia, with Bednarek blocking off any would-be markers. The Southampton midfielder strikes at goal, but his first-time effort flies over!
J. Lascelles
A. Isak
90' + 5' Isak has gone through the necessary assessments and cannot continue. Lascelles is on as Newcastle prepare to defend the corner. This period of stoppage time will certainly be extended now.
90' + 3' Isak is down again, and it appears to be a head injury. Lascelles is about to enter the fray, with the Newcastle medical team clearly suspecting their striker may be concussed.
90' + 2' Bree's cross comes off Burn and behind for a corner. Southampton need a goal now if they are to have time to level it up on aggregate, and Bazunu is up!
90' A groan is heard around St James' Park as that additional period is confirmed. Newcastle have Southampton where they want them for now, however, with Joelinton shielding the ball near the corner.
89' We're about to enter a minimum of seven minutes of stoppage time. That will no doubt be a boost for Southampton, but they need to find something special to deny Newcastle their second EFL Cup final appearance!
S. Mara
M. Salisu
88' Mara is on for Southampton, replacing Salisu as they throw men forward in search of two late goals.
87' Fine defending at both ends as Saint-Maximin drives down the right wing before firing a powerful cross towards Isak. Bednarek clears and Southampton break, as Edozie forces Schar to block his cut-back.
85' Isak is back on his feet and able to continue. Southampton are running out of time to find the two goals they need, and St James' Park is in fine voice, despite Guimaraes' red card!
83' Ward-Prowse's poor free-kick is smashed off Isak in the wall and away! The Newcastle man stays down and receives treatment, allowing both coaches to pass on instructions to their players.
Bruno Guimarães
Red Card
82' GUIMARAES IS SENT OFF! Newcastle will have to see out the final eight minutes of the 90 with a one-man disadvantage. The Brazil international can have no complaints. It's a poor challenge, high into Edozie's ankle with his studs showing. Meanwhile, the free-kick is in James Ward-Prowse territory…
80' Guimaraes concedes a free-kick 20 yards from goal with a foul on Edozie, and becomes the first player booked. However, the challenge appeared to be a high one, and there will be a VAR review…
78' Guimaraes goes close! Newcastle are looking to put this tie to bed, and Guimaraes almost does so in spectacular fashion with a curling left-footed strike from range. It swerves narrowly wide of Bazunu's right-hand post, and Southampton stay within two.
J. Aribo
I. Diallo
77' Former Rangers man Aribo is on for Diallo, as Southampton desperately search for a route back into the game.
76' There was a VAR check on that potential handball from Salisu, but the ball connected with his chest first. Bazunu clears Trippier's left-wing corner with a big punch, and Southampton can make another change...
75' Great double save from Bazunu! A hectic phase of play sees Newcastle appeal for handball against Lavia, before Longstaff unleashes a fizzing 25-yard volley. Bazunu denies him a semi-final hat-trick with a diving stop before saving at Isak's feet from the rebound!
73' Armstrong's effort was Southampton's first of the second half. For all their improvements in possession, they need to find a way to test Pope more often in the last 17 minutes of the 90.
72' Huge chance for Southampton! Lavia lifts a terrific ball in behind for Armstrong, but the former Newcastle man declines the chance to round Pope, and sees his chipped effort pushed away. Newcastle were waiting for a flag which never came, and they have Pope to thank for maintaining their two-goal aggregate lead!
70' Guimaraes grabs the ball after being tugged back by Salisu, but the referee penalises the Newcastle man for handball. Ward-Prowse whips the free-kick into the box… but Bednarek commits a foul.
68' Though Southampton started the second half by retaining possession and pushing the hosts back, things have gone a little flat for them in recent minutes. That suits Newcastle, but it surely won't be long before Jones considers using his final two changes.
66' Now Edozie is forced into some defensive work as Saint-Maximin runs at him for the first time. The French winger's touch is poor, however, and the Southampton man can muscle him off the ball.
65' Edozie sees his right-wing cross blocked by Burn, as the ball spins off the corner flag and away for a throw to Southampton.
J. Murphy
M. Almirón
62' Murphy is the last of the three new arrivals, replacing Almiron on the right.
62' Adams is caught offside from a long ball forward as Burn steps up. Newcastle will hope those three substitutions allow them to retake control of the game after a decent spell for the visitors.
A. Isak
C. Wilson
61' Club record signing Isak is also on after teeing up Joelinton's winner in the first leg. Wilson makes way.
A. Saint-Maximin
J. Willock
61' In fact, Howe has opted to make a triple substitution. Saint-Maximin is the first man introduced, replacing Willock.
59' Newcastle's start to the second half has been nothing like their high-octane opening at kick-off, and Howe looks to be readying two changes. The Toon are in an excellent position to reach the final, however, and the onus is on Southampton to break them down.
58' Southampton look to be on the back foot as Longstaff and Trippier combine on the right, but Newcastle turn possession over before Trippier fouls Edozie, gifting Saints a way out.
56' Southampton have had 73 per cent possession since half-time, with Ward-Prowse and Lavia keeping things ticking over. However, Newcastle have stood firm so far, and their backline will be a tough nut for the visitors to crack.
54' Burn falls dramatically after appearing to be caught by Armstrong. The referee is unmoved, however, and Southampton retain possession on halfway.
52' Schar eventually takes it... but his poor effort strikes the wall and bounces out for a throw-in.
51' Salisu concedes a free-kick in a central position, 25 yards from goal. Set-piece specialist Trippier is interested in this one…
50' Ward-Prowse links up well with Perraud on the left, but the latter's cut-back is eventually cleared. Southampton are at least enjoying more time on the ball in Newcastle's half, but they need to score the next goal in this tie.
48' Southampton are moving the ball with greater urgency at the start of the second half. They appear to have adopted a narrow 4-2-3-1 shape now, with Edozie, Ward-Prowse and Armstrong supporting Adams.
47' Southampton won just one of their last 18 away games against Newcastle in all competitions (D4 L13) before this contest, a 2-1 win in January 2015 in the Premier League. They need to improve on that record to have any chance of continuing their EFL Cup campaign.
46' Southampton get the second half started. They have just 45 minutes to rescue this tie, and they need two goals to force extra time.
R. Perraud
Lyanco
46' Meanwhile, Perraud replaces Lyanco, which will likely mean a return to a back four.
R. Lavia
C. Alcaraz
46' Jones has opted to make a double change at half-time. Lavia is on for Alcaraz in central midfield.
Newcastle looked to be cruising into their first EFL Cup final since 1976 after pinning Saints back early on, with the midfield trio of Longstaff, Guimaraes and Willock dominating proceedings. However, the visitors have improved since Adams struck against the run of play, and it's hard to see a scenario in which the goalmouth entertainment doesn't continue after the break!
We're halfway through this second leg, and three quarters of the way through the semi-final tie! Newcastle lead Southampton 2-1, 3-1 on aggregate, after Longstaff capped their flying start with an early double, tucking a low finish beyond Bazunu for his first before doubling up from Almiron's cut-back. However, Adams' stunning long-range finish halved the arrears after 29 minutes, and this tie may not be over just yet.
45' + 3' HALF-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 2-1 SOUTHAMPTON
45' + 3' Trippier's free-kick runs long before Schar's second delivery is cleared away. That will be that for the opening period.
45' + 2' Salisu volleys the ball away in the left-back position, but his high boot almost catches Almiron in the head, leading to an audible groan and a wide free-kick for the hosts.
45' We're into three added minutes at the end of the first half. This has been an exceptionally entertaining game so far, and Adams' goal leaves it well poised.
44' Bree darts forward on the right before attempting to find Armstrong with a low cross. The striker's heavy touch runs through to Pope, and he will be frustrated with his failure to get a shot away.
43' Southampton goalscorer Adams takes a heavy fall under pressure from Trippier, and Southampton win a free-kick on halfway.
41' Trippier loses out to Salisu, but the ball ricochets straight to Almiron in an inside-right position. The Newcastle forward sees his left-footed shot deflect away, before Schar miscues a cross behind for a goal-kick.
39' Wilson is released down the right by Guimaraes, but the striker delays his cross towards Joelinton and it's cut out at the near post.
37' Southampton launch a dangerous break through Armstrong, but the former Newcastle man is crowded out after cutting inside into a shooting position. The game has become scrappy in recent minutes, but Southampton will take it after finding themselves overwhelmed early on.
S. Edozie
K. Walker-Peters
36' Walker-Peters hobbles off. His involvement in this semi-final is over, with Edozie replacing him at left wing-back.
34' On second viewing, Lyanco did put his hands on Wilson there, though there may not have been enough contact for a penalty. Play is halted after Walker-Peters goes down, as both sides take a breather.
32' Wilson goes down near Lyanco inside the area, but the referee is uninterested. Southampton are playing with more belief now, breaking forward through midfield via Diallo.
30' Newcastle's supporters are rallying around their side as Southampton scramble a right-wing cross from Trippier away. Pope's run of 10 consecutive clean sheets is over, and Southampton have a glimmer of hope!
Goal
29' GOAL! WHAT A STRIKE FROM ADAMS, AND IT'S 2-1 OUT OF NOWHERE! Willock concedes possession cheaply inside his own half, and Adams picks out the bottom-left corner with an outstanding low drive from 25 yards out. Southampton have hardly posed any threat so far, but they are back within two goals.
28' The play is halted as Joelinton receives treatment following a challenge in midfield. The Brazilian is quickly back to his feet, however, and is able to re-enter the action.
26' Sean Longstaff scored more goals in the opening 21 minutes of this game (two) than he did in his first 60 appearances for Newcastle at St James' Park combined (one). It's been a dream outing for the homegrown midfielder so far.
25' Longstaff tries to pick out Wilson in behind, but slightly overhits his pass. Having spurned a decent opportunity shortly after his opener, the midfielder could easily have had a semi-final hat-trick!
23' Southampton need a rethink – their change of shape just hasn't worked. Willock and Joelinton have already got plenty of joy on the left, and Newcastle look hungry for more goals.
M. Almirón
Assist
21' Almiron gets the assist after finishing a flowing move by picking out Longstaff 12 yards out. The goal owed much to Joelinton and Willock, however, with Southampton unable to cope with that duo so far.
Goal
21' GOAAAAALLL! IT'S LONGSTAFF AT THE DOUBLE, AND NEWCASTLE ARE SURELY GOING THROUGH! Newcastle carve Southampton apart with ease as Joelinton picks out Willock on the left wing. Willock charges infield before finding Almiron with a neat reverse pass, and his cut-back is drilled home by Longstaff! 2-0 to Newcastle at St James' Park, 3-0 on aggregate, and the Toon look Wembley-bound!
18' Southampton finally get a touch inside Newcastle's area as Armstrong peels to the left to find Walker-Peters on the overlap. His cross is cleared by Burn, however, before Diallo eases the pressure by fouling Guimaraes.
16' Almiron almost latches onto a clever ball in behind from Trippier, but Bazunu is sharp enough to collect it at the forward's feet!
15' Southampton win a free-kick inside Newcastle's half as Burn fouls Ward-Prowse. The visitors need to enjoy a spell in possession and calm things down.
14' Southampton were already looking to become only the third team to qualify for an EFL Cup final after losing the first leg at home, along with Stoke City (v West Ham) in 1971-72 and Arsenal (v Tottenham) in 1986-87. Their task looks much more daunting after Newcastle's excellent start.
12' Schar attacks the corner at the front post, but Bazunu gets a touch to his header to divert it behind. The Southampton goalkeeper then punches away the next set-piece, and Almiron fires a volley well over the crossbar.
11' Joelinton shrugs off Lyanco in the left-hand channel before seeing a shot deflect off Bednarek and away for a corner. The hosts keep coming…
9' Newcastle have come flying out of the traps here, and Southampton need two goals to level the tie up! Jones' men have barely escaped their half so far, and they could easily be further behind already.
7' SO CLOSE TO 2-0! Longstaff almost has a dream double within eight minutes! The midfielder takes a fine touch inside from the right to beat two men, before flashing a left-footed volley narrowly wide of the bottom-right corner!
Assist
5' Trippier is credited with the assist after cutting inside to find Longstaff inside the penalty area. The England man did brilliantly there, though Armstrong's failure to track the run of Longstaff has cost Saints!
Goal
5' GOAAALLL! NEWCASTLE LEAD THROUGH LONGSTAFF! Southampton have been unable to get out so far, and they have a mountain to climb now! Guimaraes beats two in midfield with a fine piece of skill before finding Trippier. The right-back cuts inside and finds Longstaff, who hits a low strike beyond Bazunu and into the bottom-left corner! It's 1-0 to Newcastle here, and 2-0 on aggregate!
3' First half-chance for the hosts! Schar carries the ball forward from defence before slipping a pass into Longstaff's path. His cut-back is turned behind by Wilson, who was under pressure from Salisu.
2' Newcastle are pressing high early on, backed by a terrific atmosphere on Tyneside.
1' Newcastle's current run of eight consecutive home clean sheets in all competitions is the longest in their history. The last Premier League side to keep more in a row on home soil was Chelsea between January and April 2014 (nine). If the Magpies match that feat here, they will be in the final!
1' We're under way at a raucous St James' Park as the hosts kick off the second leg of this semi-final!
After seeing Newcastle's new £45million signing Anthony Gordon paraded on the pitch, the St James' Park crowd welcomes the players onto the turf. Kick-off is moments away!
Holding a 1-0 first-leg advantage, Newcastle are looking to reach their first major cup final since 1999, when they lost 2-0 to Manchester United in the FA Cup. Their last EFL Cup final appearance was in 1976. Should they qualify, it would be the biggest gap between final appearances (47 years), breaking the record of 38 years set by Birmingham City (1963-2001), Manchester City (1976-2014) and Southampton (1979-2017).
Visiting boss Nathan Jones made a raft of changes for Saturday's 2-1 FA Cup win against Blackpool, but this team has a more familiar look. Southampton's team shows four changes from the first leg, with Bednarek, Bree, Adams and Armstrong introduced. The latter duo are expected to form a front two in a 3-5-2, with Southampton needing to win the game to have any chance of progressing.
Having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle have had a full week to prepare for this game, and Howe names an unchanged side to the one which beat Saints 1-0 on the road in the first leg. Joelinton joins Wilson and Almiron in the front three after netting the winner in that game, while their solid backline is seeking a ninth consecutive home clean sheet.
SOUTHAMPTON SUBS: Willy Caballero, Duje Caleta-Car, Joe Aribo, Mislav Orsic, Romain Perraud, Sekou Mara, Samuel Edozie, Mohamed Elyounoussi, Romeo Lavia.
SOUTHAMPTON (3-5-2): Gavin Bazunu; Mohammed Salisu, Jan Bednarek, Lyanco; Kyle Walker-Peters, Carlos Alcaraz, Ibrahima Diallo, James Ward-Prowse, James Bree; Che Adams, Adam Armstrong.
NEWCASTLE UNITED SUBS: Karl Darlow, Paul Dummett, Jamaal Lascelles, Allan Saint-Maximin, Matt Ritchie, Jamal Lewis, Alexander Isak, Jacob Murphy, Elliot Anderson.
NEWCASTLE UNITED (4-3-3): Nick Pope; Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn; Joe Willock, Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff; Joelinton, Callum Wilson, Miguel Almiron.
Is this the season where Newcastle end a 68-year wait to win a major domestic trophy? There have been plenty of false dawns for the Magpies since their 1955 FA Cup triumph, but Eddie Howe's men have one foot in next month's EFL Cup final after Joelinton fired them to a 1-0 win at St Mary's Stadium last week. However, Southampton – beaten finalists in 1979 and 2017 – are still in the tie, and Adam Armstrong's late disallowed strike in the first leg showed they can threaten the Toon.
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the second leg of Newcastle United's EFL Cup semi-final against Southampton from St James' Park!
