Juventus v Roma Live Commentary, 2022/08/27

1 - 1
D. Vlahović (2)
T. Abraham (69)
Allianz Stadium

That concludes our commentary of the Serie A fixture between Juventus and Roma! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Juventus take to the pitch again in midweek when they host Spezia. Roma will look for a win at home on Tuesday against Monza.
Vlahovic’s wicked free-kick goal after just two minutes was cancelled out just over an hour later by Abraham’s close-range finish after a sensational Dybala scissor-kick assist as Juventus and Roma will have to settle for a 1-1 draw. Both sides conceded their first goals of the season as Szczesny and Patricio were made to work hard for their point. Roma grew into the game as it wore on but largely looked second-best, with Vlahovic and Cuadrado giving the Giallorossi defence a difficult evening. Both coaches made changes that largely failed to alter the flow of the match with a tie the fair result. The final score means Roma go into third while Juventus sit sixth.
Z. Çelik
Yellow Card
90' + 5' Celik is shown a very late yellow card for protestation.
E. Bove
L. Pellegrini
90' + 3' Bove comes on for a quick appearance, giving Pellegrini a rest.
90' + 1' Both sides have worked extremely hard, with a draw certainly a fair result. With Mourinho and Allegri sharing Champions League ambition, you feel as though both coaches will accept the result.
90' The fourth official indicates four minutes will be added to the end of the game for stoppages.
88' Mourinho has lost his last two games against Juventus, both in Serie A last season: in his managerial career, only once has he recorded more league defeats in a row against a single opponent, losing four against Liverpool in the Premier League.
M. Kean
D. Vlahović
86' Vlahovic will have to settle for a single goal as he's brought off for Kean late in the game.
N. Rovella
M. Locatelli
86' Rovella comes on for Locatelli as Allegri makes a swap in midfield.
84' Pellegrini’s latest corner gets past Szczesny but a crowded six-yard box prevents the bouncing ball from crossing the line!
82' Locatelli spots the run of McKennie and tries to float a cross into the penalty area from a position deep in midfield but Smalling reads the danger and heads it away powerfully.
80' McKennie looks to take on Ibanez after cutting inside from the right but the United States international is far too physical with his opponent, giving away a free-kick.
M. Kumbulla
P. Dybala
77' Dybala managed to register an assist against his former club but he won't finish the match as Kumbulla is introduced.
A. Milik
F. Miretti
77' Milik makes his first appearance in a Juventus shirt, coming on for Miretti.
W. McKennie
J. Cuadrado
77' Cuadrado will not see out the remainder of the game as he's replaced by McKennie.
F. Kostić
Yellow Card
77' Kostic has a bit too much to say to the linesman and receives a yellow card from the referee as a result.
75' A risky bouncing backpass from Sandro immediately puts Szczesny in trouble but the goalkeeper is able to time his hit well and volley the ball down the pitch.
73' Kostic hooks a cross into the penalty area for Vlahovic, who goes down during a tussle with Ibanez. The striker immediately looks to the referee in expectation of a penalty but instead the match official gives Roma a free-kick inside their penalty area for a shove on the centre-back.
71' Dybala has scored the most goals (68) at the Allianz Stadium in all competitions - the former Juventus player, who scored 82 goals for the club, is the 10th best scorer in Juventus' history in Serie A.
P. Dybala
69' A phenomenal scissor-kick from Dybala provides Abraham with the key pass as the former Juventus player registers an assist against his old club.
T. Abraham
69' ABRAHAM LEVELS THE SCORE! 1-1! Pellegrini takes a corner-kick deep to the far post, where it’s met by a sensational Dybala scissor-kick. The inspired hit plays the ball back across the face of goal where it’s turned home by Abraham!
68' Dybala and El Shaarawy combine well to open up space in the penalty area for Abraham but the striker is unable to get any power behind his half-volley, giving Szczesny an easy save to make.
66' Pellegrini finds the room to run through midfield but Zakaria eases the Roma captain out of possession with a clever shoulder nudge, ending the attack.
64' Miretti plays a corner-kick short to Cuadrado but the routine fails to pay dividends as Roma step out of their penalty area well and clear the danger promptly.
Z. Çelik
R. Karsdorp
62' A change at wing-back sees Celik sent on for Karsdorp.
60' A Roma foray forward ends disappointingly as Karsdorp’s poor touch and lax tracking allows Locatelli to steal the ball and drag Juventus up the pitch.
D. Zakaria
A. Rabiot
58' Rabiot will not be able to see out the match. Zakaria is selected to take his place.
56' Play is halted momentarily for Rabiot, who has gone down off the ball. His expression doesn’t look promising as Allegri starts making preparations on the bench. If the France international midfielder is unable to continue, one of either Zakaria or McKennie will likely be selected to fill the void.
54' Cuadrado dances into the penalty area ahead of Zalewski and looks to hit a curling effort with his weak foot but the poor effort sails harmlessly wide.
52' Pellegrini’s corner is hit looking for Ibanez but Locatelli is back in his six-yard box to clear the danger.
50' Kostic plays a dangerous low cross towards the six-yard box but neither Vlahovic or Cuadrado are able to turn it goalwards before Ibanez whacks it away.
48' Roma are finding it very hard to keep possession in their own half, with Juventus pressing the man on the ball at every opportunity. Despite the likes of Dybala and Pellegrini - both players with great quality - the visitors haven’t really settled.
46' Juventus get the match restarted from the kick-off!
S. El Shaarawy
G. Mancini
46' Mourinho makes two changes - with the second one very attacking. El Shaarawy comes in for Mancini.
N. Zalewski
L. Spinazzola
46' Zalewski comes on for Spinazzola as Roma make a change at the half.
Already a goal behind, Roma must come forward and attack in the second half, which could expose further gaps in their back line. The pace of Celik down the right as well as El Shaarawy’s guile could pay dividends when trying to unlock Juve’s defence. As for the hosts, Allegri will first and foremost count on a clean sheet, with McKennie, Zakaria and Rugani all available to help hold the lead.
The first half at the Allianz Stadium comes to a close with Juventus ahead by a goal to nil, thanks to Vlahovic’s free-kick strike just 120 seconds into the contest. Looking comfortable without the ball, the hosts looked to hit on the counter quickly via Cuadrado and Kostic, a tactic that brought with it a number of attacking set-pieces in dangerous areas. The pace of the Colombia international almost brought a second goal but Locatelli’s phenomenal hit was cancelled out by a handball earlier in the move. Roma for their part contributed very little going forward, managing just a single shot on-target and largely failing to break down Allegri’s side.
45' The fourth official indicates one minute will be added to the end of the first half for stoppages.
43' Mancini uses a free-kick in his own half to hit a long diagonal for Spinazzola, which is read well by De Sciglio, who lets it run behind for a goal-kick.
B. Cristante
Yellow Card
41' Cristante is the first Roma player to receive a yellow card for his tackle on Rabiot.
39' Vlahovic gets his angles wrong from the set-piece this time, missing the top corner and sending it behind for a goal-kick.
38' A reckless sliding tackle from Dybala takes De Sciglio down and gives Juventus yet another free-kick around the Roma penalty area.
36' It’s Cuadrado who takes responsibility for the set-piece. Hitting a low curler that forces Patricio to get down low to make the save.
35' Smalling charges through the back of Vlahovic and gives Juventus a free-kick in a central position 20 yards from goal. Can the Serbia international double his tally from another set-piece?
33' Dybala wriggles free of Bremer as he looks to spark a counter-attack but he’s bowled over by Miretti, ending Roma’s attack in the centre-circle.
31' De Sciglio takes a speculative shot from a long way out but drives his shot wide of the far post, giving Patricio a goal-kick.
29' Juventus have won 85 of their 176 Serie A games against Roma (D50 L41) including the last three; against no team do the Bianconeri have more wins in the top-flight – the last time they achieved four straight wins against the Giallorossi was in August 2009.
27' Roma have been given a lifeline following the disallowed goal, with the visitors again caught on the counter-attack. They’ve failed to produce much going forward but going two goals down would be a real confidence blow before the half-hour mark.
25' JUVENTUS DOUBLE THEIR ADVANTAGE BUT IT WON’T COUNT! Cuadrado plays a lovely pass to the edge of the 18-yard box for Locatelli, whose sweet first-time curling effort leaves Patricio no chance! The home support erupt into a frenzy but after a VAR review the goal will not stand, as there was a Vlahovic handball in the build-up to the goal.
23' Miretti catches the outstretched back leg of Dybala, sending the former Juventus forward to the ground in a heap. It’s a free-kick for Roma in their own half which they use to clear their lines with Spinazzola.
21' Roma are again unable to unpick the lock and find a way through Juve’s defence, with a congested centre of the pitch around Szczney’s penalty area frustrating Dybala and his penchant for cutting inside.
19' Locatelli is a bit too physical in his attempt to keep possession under pressure from Pellegrini, giving away a free-kick in midfield; a risky move considering he was already booked.
17' Play is stopped for Cuadrado, who has gone down under the weight of an Ibanez slide during an attempt to close down a shot. The versatile Juventus captain should be okay to continue after taking a moment to gather himself.
15' Spinazzola bursts forward down the left before laying it off to Abraham but the striker is left without options on the corner of Juve’s penalty area, allowing Allegri’s side to track back and reorganise - forcing the hosts to turn back and slow the pace of the attack.
13' Pellegrini’s corner from the left meets the head of Mancini at the near post but the midfielder is unable to flick it on, instead putting it over for a goal-kick.
11' Sandro hits a dangerous shot from outside the penalty area looking for the far corner but the left-back sends his effort just wide of the post.
10' The referee is forced to step in to separate Vlahovic and Mancini, with the physical match official shoving away players to avoid a potential fracas. He keeps his cards in his pocket and manages to diffuse the situation with Juventus restarting play with a throw.
9' Cristante hits a fantastic switch out to the left wing for Spinazzola but the Italy international’s first touch lets him down, allowing Cuadrado to come across and win back possession deep in his own half.
7' Pellegrini shapes himself to curl a wicked shot from a central position from 25-yards out but Szczesny makes the easy catch.
M. Locatelli
Yellow Card
6' Locatelli is shown the first yellow card of the match for cynically pulling down his former team-mate, Dybala.
4' It’s the perfect start for the hosts, who have taken the lead in under 120 seconds against a side who had not yet conceded this season. Mourinho is looking a frustrated figure on the touchline as Juventus come forward again looking to double their lead early.
D. Vlahović
2' VLAHOVIC OPENS THE SCORING! 1-0! The Serbia international steps up and smashes a free-kick off the underside of the bar and into the goal, leaving Patricio rooted to the spot!
2' Matic is late to the ball and takes Cuadrado down as a result, giving Juventus a free-kick 23 yards from goal.
1' Roma get the match underway from the kick-off!
Roma make one change from their 1-0 victory over Cremonese on Monday, with Matic selected to replace the unavailable Nicolo Zaniolo.
Juventus make three changes to the XI that earned a 0-0 draw with Sampdoria last time out. Szczesny replaces Perin between the posts while De Sciglio gets the nod ahead of Rugani, pushing Danilo into centre-back. The final switch is in midfield, where Miretti plays ahead of McKennie.
ROMA SUBS: Eldor Shomurodov, Mile Svilar, Matias Vina, Marash Kumbulla, Pietro Boer, Nicola Zalewski, Stephan El Shaarawy, Edoardo Bove, Fillipo Tripi, Mehmet Zeki Celik.
ROMA XI (5-3-2): Rui Patricio; Rick Karsdorp, Gianluca Mancini, Chris Smalling, Ibanez, Leonardo Spinazzola; Lorenzo Pellegrini, Bryan Cristante, Nemanja Matic; Tammy Abraham, Paulo Dybala.
JUVENTUS SUBS: Daniele Rugani, Denis Zakaria, Weston McKennie, Nicolo Rovella, Carlo Pinsoglio, Matias Sule, Frederico Gatti, Mattia Perin, Arkadiusz Milik.
JUVENTUS XI (4-3-3): Wojciech Szczesny; Alex Sandro, Bremer, Danilo, Mattia De Sciglio; Adrien Rabiot, Manuel Locatelli, Fabio Miretti; Filip Kostic, Dusan Vlahovic, Juan Cuadrado.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!
Roma also come into this fixture after back-to-back clean sheets, with Mourinho’s side registering two 1-0 wins over Salernitana and Cremonese to start the campaign. Having lost both meetings between the two sides last year by a single goal, the Giallorossi have curiously won their last two games against the Bianconeri in the month of August.
Juventus welcome Roma to the Allianz Stadium on the back of two-straight clean sheets to open the season, though their most recent outing was not an especially electric affair; 0-0 against Sampdoria. The Bianconeri will today be looking to replicate the performance that saw them smash Sassuolo 3-0 in the opener, though it will be a difficult task against a Jose Mourinho side and without Angel Di Maria.
