That concludes our commentary of the Ligue 1 fixture between Clermont Foot and Paris Saint-Germain! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Clermont Foot travel to play Reims next Sunday, while PSG host Montpellier on Saturday.
An imperious PSG come away from the Stade Gabriel Montpied with all three points after a convincing display, beating Clermont Foot by five goals to nil. The hosts did very little after the restart to try and claw back the steep half-time deficit, failing to muster a shot on target or trouble Donnarumma at all. It looked as though Galtier’s side would take their foot off the gas in the late stages and see out the win but brilliance from Messi extended the winning margin by two with 10 minutes to go: first through a simple tap-in assisted by Neymar before an awe-inspiring overhead kick sealed the emphatic result for the visitors.
88' PSG are entering their 50th season in Ligue 1, the 49th in a row, the best run in the competition's history. The capital club could win an 11th French league title and thus hold the record they currently share with St Etienne.
L. Paredes
86' Paredes links up beautifully with his international team-mate, providing the assist for Messi's superb overhead kick.
L. Messi
86' UNBELIEVABLE! IT’S ONE FOR THE HIGHLIGHT REEL! 5-0! Despite his sustained brilliance, Messi still finds new ways to entertain, getting into the penalty area and chesting down Paredes’ lifted pass before executing a spectacular overhead kick to beat Diaw!
B. Baiye
M. Gonalons
85' Baiye comes on for the booked Gonalons with five minutes to go.
84' Bernat gets into the 18-yard box and squares a pass to the penalty spot but Gastien coolly plays it back to Diaw, who clears his lines.
W. Zaïre-Emery
M. Verratti
82' Verratti is given a break before the end of the match as he's replaced by Zaire-Emery.
S. Khaoui
E. Rashani
82' Khaoui comes on for Rashani in the aftermath of PSG's fourth goal.
80' Another goal for PSG, another assist for Neymar, who makes it three to go along with his earlier strike.
L. Messi
80' MESSI MAKES IT FOUR! 4-0! It could not have been easier for the Argentina international, who slaloms through midfield in trademark style before presenting the ball to Neymar and continuing his run. After executing a step-over to earn some room the number 10 returns it to Messi for the tap-in!
H. Ekitike
Pablo Sarabia
78' It's a first appearance for PSG in Ligue 1 for Ekitike, who is sent on for Sarabia.
Juan Bernat
Nuno Mendes
78' A change on the left side sees Bernat replace Mendes.
77' SLIDING SAVE! Hakimi dribbles past two defenders to get inside the penalty area before flashing a cross to the far post for Mendes. The left wing-back tracks the ball and powers his header towards goal but Diaw comes skating across the turf to make the stop!
75' Sarabia attempts to centre the ball for Messi on the penalty spot but a retreating Seidu is able to intercept the pass with a sliding challenge which pokes it back to Diaw, who clears the danger.
J. Dossou
J. Allevinah
73' The hosts make two changes at once as Allevinah is also withdrawn, for Dossou.
Y. Magnin
M. Saračević
73' Clermont shuffle their pack with just under 20 minutes remaining as Magnin replaces Saracevic in attack.
71' Mendes steps across Allevinah in an attempt to win the ball back high up the pitch but the wing-back’s physical intervention lands him in trouble with the referee and gives the hosts a free-kick.
69' CLOSE! Mendes plays a bouncing pass inside to Messi, who wraps his left foot around the ball but fails to hit the target from six yards out!
N. Mukiele
Sergio Ramos
67' Galtier manages Ramos' minutes in the first match of the season, withdrawing him for the newly acquired Mukiele with just over 20 minutes remaining.
L. Paredes
67' Vitinha is withdrawn 67 minutes into his Ligue 1 debut, with Paredes his replacement.
M. Gonalons
Yellow Card
67' Gonalons knowingly sticks out a leg to bring Vitinha down in midfield, earning the Clermont player a yellow card.
66' Saracevic flashes a right-footed shot wide of Donnarumma’s goal, missing the far post by a disappointing margin.
64' PSG are looking to slow down the tempo as the visitors knock the ball around midfield at a walking pace. The sides are still getting their stamina and fitness back to the required levels after the pre-season and with the match seemingly already beyond doubt - there is no need to overextend.
62' Andric is brought down by Verratti in the centre-circle, right in front of the referee. The Italy international escapes a booking but it’s a free-kick to Clermont Foot despite his protests.
60' Clermont are entering their second season in Ligue 1 after the 2021/22 campaign ended in 17th place, nine fewer than any other current top-flight club (Troyes, 11).
58' Vitinha cuts inside from the left and curls a cross towards the six-yard box which is cleared away by the head of Ogier. Messi regains possession with great control but Gastien fails to give up the fight - poking it free and hammering it down the pitch.
56' Neymar wins a free-kick on the left, executing a number of keep-ups to draw Seidu before going down under physical pressure from the full-back. The Brazil international takes the ensuing set-piece himself but Kimpembe is unable to turn the cross towards goal with his head - giving Diaw a goal-kick.
54' CHANCE! Andric has his first chance of the match and he nearly converts, receiving the ball with his back to goal 20 yards away and turning before hitting a left-footed effort on the swivel that narrowly misses the top corner despite pressure from Kimpembe!
52' Gastien looks to play an incisive pass through the lines for Andric but the striker stays flat footed, failing to track the movement of the ball which allows Marquinhos to come across and win back possession.
50' Messi and Neymar stand over the deadball but it’s the former who hits it, curling his left-footed effort into the wall which allows Clermont to clear the danger effectively.
48' Messi puts the ball cleverly between the legs of Ogier before rounding him and drawing a free-kick just over 20 yards from goal.
46' The hosts get the match restarted from the kick-off!
Down by three having fashioned a single shot on target in the opening half, Clermont Foot will have no other option but to open up and attack in the second half. Rashani has been unable to exploit the space left by Ramos, with perhaps Dossou or Mendy an option in the second half. It appears as though the job is more or less complete for PSG, who will look to use the second half to work patterns of play and integrate new and young players into the side.
An entertaining half at the Stade Gabriel Montpied comes to an end with PSG ahead by two goals to nil, with the hosts having very little to cheer about in the opening period. Neymar opened the scoring after just nine minutes, picking out his spot and beating the goalkeeper with accuracy from 18 yards out, before the lead was doubled a quarter-hour later by Hakimi’s confident finish. Galtier’s side were thoroughly in control and were rarely troubled at the back, despite Hakimi, Mendes and often Ramos moving very high up the pitch. Clermont Foot looked to work neat passes and play early balls to Andric but Marquinhos and Kimpembe combined effectively to negate the danger.
45' The fourth official indicates an additional minute will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
44' Mendes has gone down in some pain after his earlier shot - with Seidu's eager attempt to block the shot taking him into the Portugal international. The wing-back should be okay to continue but it looks a painful one at the end of the first half.
42' A long pass over the top finds Mendes on the left but the wing-back is unable to beat Diaw with his low shot to the far post - missing the target by inches!
40' Verratti is bowled over by Gonalons near the technical area, giving PSG a free-kick and a chance to back their opponents up before keeping the ball short.
38' Neymar has his third goal-involvement of the day, setting up international team-mate Marquinhos for PSG's third of the day.
38' MARQUINHOS MAKES IT THREE! 3-0! It’s a simple goal for the PSG captain, who makes the late run to get on the end of Neymar’s free-kick, nodding it past Diaw from seven yards away!
J. Allevinah
Yellow Card
38' Allevinah’s cynical tug back on Vitinha sees him awarded a yellow card.
36' With just under 10 minutes left in the half Gastien will be looking for his side to calm down the tempo and get to the half-time interval without things getting worse. It's been a tough half for the hosts but they are not out of it yet.
34' Neymar audaciously attempts a backheel throughball to play Messi into the penalty area but the skill is blocked by Gastien, who immediately clears the danger.
32' Clermont have conceded four or more goals in each of their three matches against PSG in all competitions (4-4 in the 1997 Coupe de France, 0-4 and 1-6 in Ligue 1 last season).
30' Messi’s follow-up effort finds a different defender as Marquinhos gets on the end of it this time but his flicked attempt fails to fool the goalkeeper.
28' Messi’s outswinging corner finds Ramos but Diaw gets down in an instant to make an excellent save on his line and put it behind for a second corner.
26' Neymar adds an assist to his earlier goal, with his intelligent forward pass finding Hakimi in acres of room.
A. Hakimi
26' HAKIMI DOUBLES THE LEAD! 2-0! It’s a great goal from the wing-back, who explodes into space on the counter-attack, getting on the end of Neymar’s leading pass before entering the penalty area and smashing a shot high into the roof of the net!
24' Messi is habitually dropping deeper than his other two team-mates in attack when going forward, providing the link between midfield and attack. Neymar and Sarabia are tasked with making the forward runs and providing width, while the Argentina captain knits it together from a central position.
22' Gonalons latches onto the loose ball 24 yards from goal after Borges’ deflected pass but the Clermont midfielder fails to find the target - pulling it wide of Donnarumma’s right-hand post.
20' Andric is appealing for a penalty after going down in-between Marquinhos and Kimpembe but the referee sees nothing wrong with the contact inside the 18-yard box and advises Donnarumma to restart play from a goal-kick.
18' VITINHA GOES WIDE! Clermont are unable to effectively clear Neymar’s lofted pass for Messi, putting the loose ball as far as the edge of the 18-yard box. The midfielder latches onto it and hits a half-volley but drags his effort wide of the mark!
17' Wieteska steps forward to dribble into space and hits a long pass from midfield looking for the run of Andric but Donnarumma meets the delivery comfortably.
15' Sarabia lifts a curling ball from a central position into the penalty area for Neymar but Diaw reads the intentions of the forward and steps off his line to claim the pass.
14' The wall does its job as Kimpembe jumps highest to deflect the free-kick, preventing the goalkeeper from being called into action.
Yellow Card
13' The first yellow card of the match is shown to Vitinha, whose careless bump from behind sends Sarcevic to the turf 28 yards from Donnarumma’s target.
11' Neymar wins a free-kick 30 yards from goal after Gastien’s physical marking gets the midfielder in trouble with the referee but Messi’s chipped delivery is immediately repelled by the Clermont defence.
L. Messi
9' Messi's crucial touch delivered the ball to Neymar in space, with the Argentina captain credited with the assist!
9' PSG OPEN THE SCORING! 1-0! It has taken less than 10 minutes for the champions to go ahead in their first league match of the season as Sarabia drives to the byline before cutting a cross back to the edge of the 18-yard box. Messi meets it with a deft touch to flick it to Neymar, who slots it into the corner of the goal!
7' CLOSE! Hakimi gets on the end of Ramos’ long pass and fires a low cross into the penalty area for Neymar, whose shot is blocked and turned behind narrowly for a corner by Seidu.
5' Hakimi finds Verratti on the edge of the penalty area but the Italy international’s first-time pass around the corner is met by Diaw.
3' Borges charges down the left on an overlapping run, playing a clever one-two pass with Gastien before hoisting a cross into the penalty area for Andric, whose cushioned header is easily saved by Donnarumma.
1' PSG get the match underway from the kick-off!
PSG line up with a back three as well in Galtier’s first match at the helm, with Donnarumma chosen ahead of Navas in goal. Ramos, Marquinhos and Kimpembe make up the defence while Hakimi and Mendes start at wing-back. An injury to Kylian Mbappe leaves a spot for Sarabia to start in attack, alongside Messi and Neymar.
Clermont start the season with a new look to their shape, with Gastien opting to deploy a three-man defence. Diaw gets the nod between the posts while Ogier, Seidu and Wieteska are deployed just ahead of the goalkeeper. Borges and Rashani will be the wing-backs while Gastien and the experienced Gonalons start in central midfield. In attack, Saracevic and Allevinah start either side of the striker - Andric.
PSG SUBS: Keylor Navas, Leandro Paredes, Juan Bernat, Danilo Pereira, Abdou Diallo, Nordi Mukiele, Hugo Ekitike, Warren Zaire-Emery, Arnaud Kalimuendo.
PSG XI (3-4-3): Gianluigi Donnarumma; Sergio Ramos, Marquinhos, Presnel Kimpembe; Achraf Hakimi, Vitinha, Marco Verratti, Nuno Mendes; Pablo Sarabia, Lionel Messi, Neymar.

With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let's take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with our hosts!
Last year saw PSG return to the summit of French football after losing their title to Lille, securing their 10th league championship in club history and their eighth in the last decade. New coach Christophe Galtier is tasked with replacing Mauricio Pochettino in the technical area, where he’ll be looking for a fast start to his tenure.
Clermont Foot successfully navigated their first top-flight season in club history last year, staving off relegation by a four-point margin. Coach Pascal Gastien will be looking to put further distance between his side and the drop this time around - though they are given a herculean task to start.
