Senegal Player Ratings: Torrid night for Koulibaly as Teranga Lions bow out of World Cup

The 30-year-old Chelsea goalkeeper made two great saves, both from Harry Kane. Mendy first got at his near post to prevent the England captain from making it 2-0 after the Three Lions had launched a counter attack and then saved from the Tottenham Hotspur striker in the second half.

He could not do much to prevent England's three goals as he was exposed by his defence when they were scored. Mendy has had a mixed tournament, having improved from his opening day howlers, but he faced a different class on Sunday.

The Real Betis right-back has been great in his defensive role and got another chance to help the African side storm to victory. He, however, could do little to prevent England from scoring as all the three goals were created in midfield.

Sabaly was solid defensively and also brave to make forward runs, especially as Senegal chased the game. He was the man tasked with marking Phil Foden but the Manchester City man opted to drift into space, creating more problems for the centre-backs and not the full-back.

The 23-year-old was deployed at left-back and tasked with keeping Bukayo Saka quiet. He did well early on, getting ahead of the Arsenal man to prevent him from getting on the end of a cross in the 31st minute. He was also brave enough to go forward and bring in crosses on the few occasions when England lost the ball.

He was, however, beaten twice by Saka who ultimately got on his wrong side to get into the box and score England's third goal.

The 31-year-old Chelsea defender produced a great game to score against Ecuador and send the African champions into the round of 16 but was one of Senegal's most disappointing player, especially in the first half.

His determination to keep Kane away was admirable but it turned out to be costly as he was constantly dragged out of position by the England captain who opted to drop deep and act as a playmaker, creating space for Jordan Henderson and Jude Bellingham to run into and cause havoc.

Koulibaly lost possession 19 times and it was from these situations that Senegal conceded chances which proved to be costly.

Tasked with clearing danger when his centre-back partner had been dragged out of position or lost the ball in dangerous areas, the 26-year-old managed two goal-saving clearances but could not do much when outnumbered especially for England's first two goals.

Diallo nearly gifted England a seventh-minute goal when he was dispossessed by Saka in the box after taking long to clear the ball. His positioning was also not great for England's third goal, creating space for Saka to easily dink over Mendy.

With Idrissa Gueye suspended, Ciss played in a two-man midfield alongside Nampalys Mendy but he struggled to impose himself on the game.

Ciss lost possession a number of times with Senegal's midfield easily bypassed by Bellingham. He was unable to cover for Koulibaly whenever the Senegal captain went forward and was eventually taken off at halftime for Pape Gueye.

The 30-year-old Leicester City midfielder returned to the starting XI following the suspension of Idrissa Gueye and formed a two-man midfield with Ciss supported by the two wingers.

He was decent defensively in the opening 30 minutes when Senegal threatened but he employed a conservative approach, opting to sit deep and pass side ways as opposed to getting into advanced positions.

Mendy was restricted to long balls, a tactic that nearly worked when Boulaye Dia got close to scoring, but he played second fiddle to Bellingham who was all over the pitch for England.

Playing as the supporting forward alongside Boulaye Dia, Ndiaye only had one moment when he got into the England box before he was dispossessed.

Cisse chose to use his pace on the counter to try and hurt the Three Lions but with Senegal being beaten at their own game, he had limited opportunities and went off at the break with Bamba Dieng taking his place.

With Pape Gueye dropped, the 23-year-old Monaco winger was deployed on the left wing to stop England from hurting Senegal out wide with his pace on the counterattack seen as vital.

However, he made little impact with Senegal on the back foot for most of the contest. Diatta did not provide the defensive cover needed in the wide areas as he was constantly dragged out of position and also failed to provide much going forward.

He was among the three players taken off at half time with Pape Matar Sarr taking his place.

Senegal's most impressive player at the World Cup, Sarr did not have sniff on Sunday when he was closely monitored by Kyle Walker.

The Watford winger scored from the penalty spot as Senegal defeated Ecuador in their final group game but did not have it easy on Sunday.

He had his moments, however, almost making it 1-0 for Senegal after 22 minutes when Diatta brought in a cross following a poor pass from Harry Maguire.

Sarr had another moment when he beat Walker before the England right-back brought him down with a cynical challenge that saw him escape a yellow card.

The 26-year-old showed great centre-forward play and had the first shot on target for both teams when he drew a great save from Jordan Pickford in the 31st minute.

That was after he got better of Harry Maguire after holding off the Manchester United captain but he was unable to get a shot on goal.

Dia was the only forward player who tried to make things happen for Senegal in what was a tough night before he was replaced by Famara Diedhiou in the 71st minute.

The Marseille forward replaced Iliman Ndiaye at half-time but he came on at a time when his side was dominated and with possession hard to come by for Senegal, he could not do much.

Dieng only managed one blocked shot, having had 15 touches of the ball in 45 minutes.

The Marseille midfielder found himself on the bench after starting against Ecuador as the Teranga Lions sought a compact shape to contain England.

He was introduced after the break for Ciss as Cisse sought more control in the middle of the park but could not do much. He was at fault for England's third goal when he lost the ball before Foden won it to feed Saka in the box.

The Alanyaspor forward replaced Dia with 20 minutes remaining but did more defending than attacking given England had taken control of possession by then as they sought to see the game out.

Diedhiou only had seven touches and did not manage a shot, only helping out defensively by winning one aerial duel from a cross.

The AC Milan left-back got his first taste of the World Cup when he came in seven minutes from time with the game already out of reach. He touched the ball 10 times, all in his own half, as his team tried to avoid conceding more.

Just playing his second match at the World Cup after getting 13 minutes against Qatar, Sarr was the most impressive among the Teranga Lions' substitutes.

He immediately made his presence felt with a number tackles while trying to get his team on the front foot. Sarr was not afraid to shoot, making three attempts, and he also brought in crosses for Dia and Sarr but the forwards could not capitalise.
