The Amakhosi coach was saddened to lose his former teammate who played a vital role in his development as a player.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has described fallen Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana midfielder John Moeti as a dedicated and disciplined player.

Zwane and Moeti played together at Pirates and the Chiefs tactician expressed his sadness at losing the football giant who played a key role in making him and others better players through his advice.

The 1996 Africa Cup of Nations winner, who played for Pirates between 1994 and 2000 before switching to SuperSport United in 2001, succumbed to an undisclosed illness at his home on Monday.

The Bafana Bafana legend had reportedly been receiving specialist medical care for the past eight months.

Soweto-born Moeti was part of the Pirates side that claimed the 1995 Caf Champions League crown before continental success with the national team followed a year later. He was also in the Bafana Bafana squad that lost the 1998 Afcon final, following a 2-0 defeat to Egypt.

Here are some of the tributes to the fallen legend.

Zwane sad to lose humble, dedicated ‘teacher’ Moeti

I played with him at Pirates, he was my senior, very humble person, very dedicated and disciplined. He was one of the seniors that used to call us when we were young at the time and he used to call us and we had to listen to him. Trying to help us understand and see things differently. The nation has lost a giant. - Arthur Zwane

Mokwena has vivid memories of Moeti who inspired him as a kid

He’s a player that I admired as a kid growing up. I watched a lot at the old Orlando Stadium and even FNB. I have vivid memories. Ellis Park, I remember the match that resulted in the stampede and he was very good that night, him and Thabang Lebese that night stand in the little corner in the back of my head as having had very good performances. - Rhulani Mokwena

He was a great servant of the game, what he achieved in the game was of high standards, Nations Cups and Champions League. It's very sad to lose him so sudden. I didn’t know that anything was going on recently with John, we had lost touch. Huge blow waking up this morning so condolences to his family. It’s a great loss, John was a hell of a guy and player.

I’m at a loss for words. You [Moeti] just gave me an upper cut. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen him, perhaps two years ago. Its very rare to find a person like him coming from Ekasi. He liked to see things being done by the book. He didn’t drink or smoke but he could chill with everybody. When it came to football, he really lived for it. He meant business all the time.
