'Iwobi a fraud, was playing for a new Everton contract' - Fans after Brighton humiliate Toffees

The 26-year-old Super Eagle has sparked debate on his future with the Merseysiders after his display in the humiliating defeat against the Seagulls

Everton supporters have called on the club's top hierarchy to stall contract negotiations with Alex Iwobi after his display in the 4-1 Premier League defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday.

The Toffees went into the fixture at Goodison Park having snatched a point in the 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last Saturday but they found themselves trailing when Kaoru Mitoma put the Seagulls ahead for a 1-0 score at the half-time break.

Three goals in a space of seven minutes courtesy of Evan Ferguson, Solly March, and Pascal Grob then stunned the Toffees' faithful and despite a consolation from the penalty spot converted by Demarai Gray after Iwobi had been fouled inside the box, they succumbed to their ninth defeat of the season.

The 26-year-old Iwobi has been one of the key players for Everton under manager Frank Lampard, having started in every single top-flight fixture in this campaign.

Apart from winning the penalty, the former Arsenal youngster had a game to forget, managing only one single shot in the entire contest, and was yellow carded by referee Andre Marriner in the 75th minute following a clumsy challenge.

His display has left fans questioning whether he deserves a contract extension as sampled by GOAL in the fan comments below.

    Iwobi was awful vs Brighton

Iwobi has been out of form for a while now. Looks like a shell of the player we saw at the beginning of the season. - @NorCalToffee

Iwobi was awful against Brighton. He wasn’t the only one though - @fogartyp946

Iwobi is a fraud who just played for a new contract. - @EvertonPage8

I’d rather no football than watch Iwobi play week in and week out and be the main threat. - @Archibaldinho

Iwobi is good at Tik Tok apparently. Well worth 100k a week. He’s terrible at football. - @robr7373

There was no man of the match for us, Iwobi was poor along with the others. - @AlanCarlson19

Iwobi is really nowhere near as good as some of you lot make out to know. - @Jamie_UTFT

Iwobi might have been good last season but he was playing for a new contract. - @AlanCarlson19

    Iwobi is a horrendous footballer

I'm not an Everton fan but my dad is so I keep an eye out. If I may give an outsider opinion, I have heard so many of your fans say how brilliant Alex Iwobi is! Are you all mental? He's a horrendous footballer. If he is your best player, you're doomed. - @DonieDrumm

I remember when some said Iwobi walked into nearly every midfield in the Premier League, I think they are doomed🤣🤣 - @ch_ginge

I still don’t think Iwobi is good enough. - @CJLowndes

Iwobi has been shambolic since the new deal. - @Bluegoblin32

Can’t really single a player out as they have all been dreadful, but Iwobi seems form has significantly dropped since the talk of a new contract. - @MagooMr12

Iwobi is the worst off-the-ball player I’ve ever seen. - @ahayes36

    Everton should stall Iwobi deal

I’d be holding off on the new contract for Iwobi. His level has dropped as expected. - @CharlieW4780

After this performance, the Iwobi contract should be stalled. - @toffeetonia

Iwobi is terrible, don’t extend for five years, please!!! - @Mark_LaManna68

Iwobi is out of contract in 2024, don’t know why we’re rushing to give him a new one based on a few decent months. - @WAJG_96

Alex Iwobi lately is playing like he’s just signed a new long-term lucrative deal. He’s gone back to not be assessed again. - @Craigefc28

No new contracts until the end of the season. Can’t be justifying increasing Gordon or Iwobi’s, especially after the latter’s recent performances. All has been downhill for him and the team since he scored against Man United. - @carterdan23

Which sensible team would pay Doucoure 120k per week, and which sensible team would contemplate paying Iwobi 100k a week? - @colinsmith50

Iwobi been very poor since he found out he’s getting a new contract. - @ALEX_01EFC

Iwobi doesn’t deserve 100k a week, by the way, he’s back to the poor player he was. - @efcrj

Arteta got rid of players without the right mentality. Short-term pain for long-term gain. We need to do the same. Giving Iwobi a reported £100k a week contract is insanity. - @liam63786267

  • Everton boss Frank Lampard and Alex Iwobi of Nigeria.

Lampard to blame for Iwobi woes

Don’t know how Lampard thought Iwobi and Davies would have been sound together in the middle of the park he needed sacking for that alone to get him gone @Everton #EFC. - @Kentwilltearyo2

Nothing against him [Lampaprd] but I don't think he can survive this humiliation, playing Iwobi in the wrong position. Why. No Ben Godfrey. Exposes us. - @open2thepeople7

Frank Lampard sacked himself the day he switched Alex Iwobi from left central midfield to wingback I knew he really lost it, why change Everton's best shape? strange indeed. - @FanDriller

Any team with Davies and Iwobi in midfield is going to get destroyed. clearly Frank is not the man. Blame also has to go to whoever brought in McNeil and Maupay. Also, where are the new signings that are needed? A complete mess of a club. - @MkeatingMichael

I thought the decisions Lampard makes are why he has to be sacked. Iwobi was out of position and Godfrey and Mina sat on the bench as we ship four at home. Not sure how he or the team come back from this. - @hado72

Iwobi has truly reverted to his old self, but why?!? Frank Lampard, the players, himself, what??? - @bluescouse

  • Alex Iwobi Everton 2022-23

    Iwobi worst Everton signing

Remember when our fans thought Iwobi was good because he got a few assists 😂 I think he is among the worst signings we’ve ever made. - @TheEvertonian78

Iwobi needs to stop being wasteful when in an attacking position, man up and control the ball and pass it. - @Evertxn

  • Idrissa Gueye Everton 2022-23

    Onana, Iwobi partnership not working

Before he left he lacked restraint in staying in position, maybe it’s him moving all over the place, agree, nowhere near the player he was, it just hasn’t worked with Amadou [Onana], and Iwobi licence to roam, the midfield is shambolic. - @Bluelefty1

Iwobi, Idrissa [Gueye], and Onana midfield hype, they deserve this humbling by Brighton. - @refinedcris

Absolutely shocking, Davies is horrible and shouldn’t be anywhere near this team, Patterson is getting turned inside out. We are too narrow and Iwobi needs to come more central. @ben67777438

  • Alex Iwobi

Iwobi does not deserve to start

I've said it before and I'll say it again, we could bring Guardiola, Sir Alex, and prime Howard Kendall into joint manage this team and it wouldn't change. You cannot expect to perform well in the Premier League when you're starting the likes of Davies, McNeill, Gray, and Iwobi. - @barryjb4

How is Iwobi still on the pitch for Everton? - @keverton_1878

Iwobi is overrated by supporters, he really is not that special! Maybe now that he is getting his long-term contract, he is less motivated and should be benched. - @Mark_LaManna68

  • Frank Lampard Everton Brighton 2022-23

    Everton should sack Lampard

Lampard needs to be sacked. Everton are appalling. A midfield trio of Iwobi, Gueye, and Davies is not strong enough for the Championship, let alone the Premier League. - @SriparanGobi

Davies and Iwobi don't bring creativity. The full-backs hardly get forward. One of the wingers can't cross the ball to save his life. DCL just sits there as there's nothing to feed off at all. Just a mess really and Lampard should go. - @Jordinho88

  • Alex Iwobi

    Hard to criticise Iwobi

It's hard to criticise Iwobi as he does at least run around [normally from side to side] but he plays in the most influential position and offers very little in terms of incisive passes/goals for #EFC. - @MurphyRichie

Just because Alex Iwobi has improved, still doesn’t mean he’s the answer. Let me put it to you this way, he couldn’t of get any worse 12 months ago. The only way was up. - @Joe_Clemo
