The want-away forward has been left out against Brighton, with Christian Eriksen starting in the false nine position

Cristiano Ronaldo will start on the bench for Manchester United against Brighton on Sunday while Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen make their debuts for the club in Erik Ten Hag's first Premier League match in charge.

United's other summer signing, Tyrell Malacia, starts on the bench, as does defender Raphael Varane, with Martinez preferred to partner Harry Maguire at the back.

United are expected to play a false nine rather than a recognised central striker, and Erik Ten Hag has said debutant Christian Eriksen will fill that role, flanked by Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho.

Bruno Fernandes will join Fred and Scott McTominay in midfield, while Diogo Dalot is, as expected, preferred to Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back.
