‘They have grown as a team’

2022-02-20T17:34:57.457Z

Ralf Rangnick was pleased with the spirit on show from Manchester United as they threw away a two-goal lead at Leeds, only to find another gear and prevail 4-2 on the day.

The Red Devils boss has told Sky Sports: "That was a fantastic game to watch if you are not the manager of either team. It was a very good first half; after the first few minutes we had control and could have been three or four nil up.

"After two minutes in the second half, it was a completely different atmosphere in the stadium. The [first] goal was lucky, I don't think he meant to shoot the ball like he did.

"Then it was 2-2 and for five minutes after that it was very intense. The team showed maturity and stayed together. I'm not so sure this would have happened two or three months ago, which shows they have grown as a team. We deserved to win."

‘We have to defend better’

2022-02-20T16:26:51.187Z

Clean sheets have never been Leeds’ thing under Marcelo Bielsa, but the Leeds boss admits that his side need to become tighter at the back after losing 4-2 at home to Manchester United.

He has told Sky Sports: "In the first half we started well and ended well but didn't manage to score. In the moments we lost dominance they scored.

"After we got back level we had the chance to go 3-2 up and straight way they went up and scored again. We played better trying to get back into the game than when we were trying to keep a result but something has repeated that is difficult to resolve.

"We have to defend better. We are missing Kalvin Phillips and Robin Koch was substituted and we could not count on Pascal [Struijk] in midfield because he went back into defence. Not being able to come with the three defensive midfielders we have, there is a weakness in the recovery of the ball."

Maguire embarrassed by set-piece record

2022-02-20T16:18:05.134Z

Harry Maguire was relieved to bring Manchester United’s long wait for a goal from a corner to a close in the Red Devils’ 4-2 win at Leeds.

He told Sky Sports afterwards: "I'm embarrassed by the stat [nearly 140 corners without a goal]. I'm a big part of that set play routine but as a team we've been nowhere near good enough. If we scored more from set pieces we'd be higher up the table."

He added on testing conditions at Ellan Road: "They were really bad. We came out at the start of the second half and tried to play the same way, but got caught in it. It was old school, I'm sure it was good to watch but thankfully we came out on top."
