Indian fans flock to Qatar in record numbers to watch 2022 FIFA World Cup

Indian fans have travelled to Qatar in numbers to watch the 2022 FIFA World Cup and to become the second highest group of visitors after Saudi Arabia.

WHAT HAPPENED? India have recorded the second-highest number of visitors in Qatar with 56,893 fans, according to a report published by FIFA. This is already more than the number of fans who had gone to Russia to watch the World Cup. Saudi Arabia tops the chart with 77, 106 fans while USA, UK and Mexico complete the top five with 36,236, 30,719 and 25,533 supporters respectively at the end of group stages.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: FIFA's numbers also show a cumulative stadium attendance of 2.45 million spectators. It boasts of an average 96 per cent occupancy in each game and is significantly higher than the corresponding 2.17 million figure recorded four years back in Russia.

Though India haven't qualified for the World Cup, the tournament remains popular among Indian fans. The World Cup has also generated a lot of excitement in the country. With Qatar geographically close to the Indian subcontinent, fans from India have utilised the chance to flock to Qatar and revel in the atmosphere of a World Cup.
