Wolverhampton Wanderers v Nottingham Forest Live Commentary, 10/15/22

1 - 0
Rúben Neves (56 pen)
Molineux Stadium

That's all from us, we hope you enjoyed the game. Until the next one, goodbye!
Wolves' crucial three points sends them up to 17th in the table, a place above the bottom three at Southampton's expense. They record their second win of the season, albeit with the caveat that Neves' penalty was only their fourth goal of the campaign so far. It's worse news for Forest though, who slip to 20th place thanks to Leicester's draw with Crystal Palace in an earlier fixture. Four points from safety with a goal difference of -16, staying in the top-flight already looks a tall order for the promoted side, just 10 games into their first season back in the Premier League.
On his return to the Wolves side, Ruben Neves ran the show from the base of midfield, scoring the game's only goal and making several other important contributions at both ends of the field. He had two attempts on target, and also completed more passes than anyone else on the pitch, including a game-high 21 in the final third. He was involved in 14 duels, winning six, and also won possession six times in defence, via three tackles, a clearance and an interception. Leader.
Over 100 minutes of attritional football comes to an end, with Wolves edging to victory thanks to Ruben Neves' 56th minute penalty! In a second half that yielded few high-quality chances, Forest got their chance at redemption when VAR again intervened to hand them a spot kick of their own. Johnson couldn't capitalise though, with Sa saving his penalty in the 79th minute, and the hosts held on to win their first game in three attempts, and climb out of the bottom three.
90' + 9' Johnson bursts down the left again and beats two on his way into the box. There's red shirts aplenty in the box, but Johnson can't find any of them, as he drags a shot towards the near post and into the side netting.
J. Hodge
Yellow Card
Wolverhampton Wanderers
90' + 7' Hodge flies in on Williams and catches him very late, and Williams isn't at all happy with the Wolves substitute, who receives a late booking.
90' + 7' Johnson takes on Semedo down the left and looks to beat him, but takes a heavy touch, allowing Jonny to block him off and resulting in a Wolves goal kick!
90' + 5' Forest have improved in the second half, but regardless of that VAR-awarded penalty, have hardly gone close to testing Sa between the Wolves posts and look likely to finish another game goalless. With the abundance of strikers at the club, many of whom arrived in the summer, this is a damning stat for Steve Cooper's side.
90' + 3' A defensive mix-up almost gives Surridge space to run through on goal, but Sa is out to claim the bouncing ball before he can.
Hugo Bueno
R. Aït Nouri
Wolverhampton Wanderers
90' + 2' Ait Nouri also comes off having been up and down the left-hand side, and Hugo Bueno replaces him.
J. Hodge
Matheus Nunes
Wolverhampton Wanderers
90' + 2' Matheus is the next Wolves midfielder to come off, and he's replaced by youngster Joseph Hodge.
90' + 1' OVER!!! A Forest free-kick is floated to the back post, where Cook heads it back across the face brilliantly, but Yates can only put the resultant header over the bar!
90' We'll play an additional EIGHT minutes of added time, which is more than enough for Forest to find that crucial equalising goal!
S. Surridge
H. Toffolo
Nottingham Forest
89' Toffolo's been run ragged by Traore all game, and of course conceded what may well be the match-deciding penalty, and he comes off for Sam Surridge for the final few moments of this game.
88' A defensive header is met by Mangala on the edge of the box, but he skies his attempted volley by some distance!
87' Forest have lost all four of the game in which they've conceded the opening goal in the English Premier League this season, and are just moments away from making it five.
Nélson Semedo
Adama Traoré
Wolverhampton Wanderers
85' Adama Traore has been Wolves' main creative outlet all game long, and with just minutes left in it, comes off for Nelson Semedo.
T. Awoniyi
R. Freuler
Nottingham Forest
84' Freuler comes off in Forest's latest change, and attacking reinforcements are introduced in the form of Taiwo Awoniyi.
83' Williams whips a cross into the area, but it's over the heads of everyone as it flies over for a goal kick.
B. Traoré
João Moutinho
Wolverhampton Wanderers
82' Moutinho has run the midfield well alongside Neves for Wolves, but he's withdrawn now for Boubacar Traore to see out the game.
Hwang Hee-Chan
Diego Costa
Wolverhampton Wanderers
82' Costa comes off in Wolves' first change, and Hwang Hee-Chan will replace him up front.
Daniel Podence
Yellow Card
Wolverhampton Wanderers
80' Podence drops deep to help out his defence, but ends up bundling Williams over to concede a yellow card-worthy free-kick!
José Sá
Penalty Save
Wolverhampton Wanderers
79' Sa, playing with a fractured wrist no less, reacted brilliantly there, and made sure to keep his feet on the line as he saved Johnson's penalty!
B. Johnson
Penalty Miss
Nottingham Forest
79' SAVED!!! Johnson steps up and looks to place the ball in the bottom-right corner, but Sa dives brilliantly to tip it away with his left hand!
78' ANOTHER PENALTY!!! The referee is over at the VAR screen for even less time on this occasion, before pointing to the spot for a Forest penalty!
77' We're off to VAR again for another look at what happened during that Forest corner, and it looks as if Matheus has dragged Yates to ground inside the box!
76' BLOCKED!!! After Gibbs-White's corner hits Traore and bounces away, Wolves break at speed and Podence cuts inside. He beats two players before releasing Matheus in the box, and his shot is blocked behind for a corner!
75' Toffolo's cross into the box finds no-one but Gomes, who hacks a clearance past his own goalkeeper and over the crossbar for a corner!
74' Gibbs-White floats a cross to the back post, where Lingard in turn finds Mangala, but his shot from the edge of the box is blocked almost as soon as it leaves his foot!
72' Ait Nouri bursts into space and is found down the left, but his cross to Podence at the back post is wayward and goes behind for a goal kick!
71' Costa latches onto a good throughball and cuts inside Cook to shoot, but Williams races back to knock the ball from under his foot and Cook scythes it clear!
O. Mangala
C. Kouyaté
Nottingham Forest
70' Kouyate is also withdrawn, and Orel Mangala will take his place in midfield.
J. Lingard
E. Dennis
Nottingham Forest
70' Forest make their first changes of the match, with Dennis coming off for Jesse Lingard.
68' OVER!!! Moutinho swings a free-kick into the box, and Costa gets a decent connection with a header despite losing his balance, but the ball takes a deflection and bounces over the bar!
S. McKenna
Yellow Card
Nottingham Forest
67' Traore bursts past Toffolo around the outside and plays the ball forward for Costa. He's taken out from behind by McKenna, who picks up a rather lenient yellow card for the tackle!
65' Before this game, Wolves had scored just three goals in the Premier League this season, and were the only side yet to score a second half goal. They hadn’t scored after half-time in any of their last 10 league games, but Neves' penalty has fixed that poor record!
63' Neves is sandwiched in a challenge between Kouyate and Gibbs-White, and it's the former who is penalised for a free-kick against Forest.
61' WIDE! After a lengthy break between foul and free-kick, Gibbs-White steps up from the edge of the box, but can only send his dipping effort wide of Sa's left post!
59' Neves is down at the other end for Wolves, and having just returned from a suspension-enforced absence, the home fans will be holding their breath for the Portugal international to be fit to carry on.
57' Dennis nips in front of Moutinho to steal the ball on the edge of the Wolves box, and wins a free-kick in a brilliant position for Forest.
Rúben Neves
Penalty Goal
Wolverhampton Wanderers
56' GOOOOAAAALLL!!! Neves runs up to smash the ball beyond Henderson's grasp, and into the bottom corner to put Wolves 1-0 up!!! Nearly four games without a goal for Wolves comes to an end, and their captain kept his cool when it mattered from the spot!
55' PENALTY! The VAR referee's aren't quite convinced, so referee Tom Brammall heads over to the pitchside screen for a look himself. He's not there long, and points to the spot for a Wolves penalty!
53' We've gone up to the VAR screens for a potential handball against Toffolo in the box, and the replays do appear to show that Traore's shot struck his outstretched arm!
52' BLOCKED!!! Podence's cross is headed away, but Wolves come straight back at Forest, and Traore cuts inside before shooting off his left, but the shot is blocked behind for a corner!
50' Freuler finds Gibbs-White on the left, and the former Wolves man cuts inside before shooting from the edge of the box, sending his curling effort wide of the target!
49' Jonny cuts inside from the right but has his heels clipped by Kouyate, and Wolves win a free-kick in a promising attacking position.
47' A Good dummy from Costa sees Podence's pass roll through for Ait Nouri in the box, but Cook slides in to scoop the ball away for Forest!
46' Yates gets the game back underway, as the second half kicks off!
The two sides return for the second half, and can Forest find an answer to Wolves' first-half dominance, or will we see more of the same here at Molineux?
Toffolo's had a torrid time attempting to tie down Traore down that side of the field, with the Wolves winger having completed two shots, two key passes, and four of eight attempted crosses. He's also engaged in five duels, mainly against Toffolo, and has won two free-kicks in the process. Handful.
A goalless first half, but one that has been dominated by the home side. Wolves have been camped in Forest's half at times, and have tested their defence on several occasions, but the final ball or shot has let them down each time! They went closest through Kilman's header which struck the post, but will need to improve in front of goal if they're to win this game, which, unless Forest improve significantly in the second half, is there for the taking.
45' + 1' We're into a minute of added time at the end of this first half.
45' Williams' cross is met by Kouyate on the edge of the box, whose downward header is easily dealt with by Sa in the Wolves goal.
45' Matheus' first-time pass finds Neves down the left, but his cross back into the area goes straight to Henderson!
44' After feigning shooting on the edge of the box, Neves dinks the ball over the top to Traore in space. He can cross or shoot, but does neither with conviction as he floats the ball into Henderson's arms.
42' A Wolves corner is met by no-one and bounces to Traore in the box. He smashes an off-balance shot with his left foot, which is blocked and cleared by Yates!
41' Costa has been involved in 12 goals in 16 Premier League appearances against promoted sides (10 goals, two assists), including six in six in his last campaign in the competition back in 2016-17.
39' OFF THE POST!!! Traore has time and space to cross from the right and does so, finding Kilman in the box. His glancing header looks destined to find the back of the net, but bounces off the post and back into the grateful arms of Henderson!
37' CHANCE!!!! Traore cuts out Henderson's long kick and finds his more central teammates. Podence plays Ait Nouri in again, who crosses into the six-yard box. Costa slides in to score but misses it completely, but his embarrassment is spared by the offside flag being raised!
36' WIDE!!!! Podence turns to produce a brilliant pass for Ait Nouri, who races down the left and into the box, before firing a shot beyond Henderson and just wide of the far post!
35' Dennis drops deep to collect the ball once more, but this time it's Kilman who fouls him. The Forest striker hasn't had any chances yet, and the Wolves defence clearly want to keep him away from their 18-yard box!
34' Moutinho's all over Dennis as the Forest striker attempts to step beyond him, and the Wolves midfielder is lucky not to be shown a yellow card there!
32' Good movement from Matheus gives him space on the byline to cross, but he's crowded out before finding Neves, and Forest are eventually able to clear.
31' Kouyate is down holding his lower back, and looks to be in some discomfort. It remains to be seen whether the former West Ham and Crystal Palace midfielder will be able to carry on.
29' Nottingham Forest have won three of their last five away league games against Wolves, more than they had in their previous 20 visits to Molineux.
27' Gibbs-White attempts to drag down Traore as the winger sparks a break, but is only penalised and not booked by the referee for the foul on his former Wolves teammate.
26' WIDE!!! Williams' cross-field pass is kept in play by Dennis, who hooks the ball back into the danger area. Williams arrives late and blasts a volley goalwards, and a series of deflections sees it bounce wide for a Forest corner!
24' Wolves are proving to be much better at keeping hold of the ball at the moment. Forest's passes out of defence are coming straight back at them, exemplified by Neves intercepting Toffolo's pass and finding Traore, who flashes the ball across the face of goal!
22' Nottingham Forest have lost three of their four away Premier League games this season, including the last two by an aggregate score of 10-0. They’ve only scored once on the road so far, with Brennan Johnson netting against Everton in August.
20' WIDE!!! Wolves fly forward on the break as Matheus finds Traore. Toffolo shows him the outside, and the Wolves winger shoots, snatching at an effort which flies wide of Henderson's left post!
19' Gomes' pass is cut out by Johnson, who turns the Wolves centre-back inside out before his shot is blocked by Moutinho!
19' OVER!!! Flying down the right to catch up with a long pass forward, Traore hangs his cross to the back post, where Ait Nouri arrives late and heads a decent effort over the bar!
18' Wolves have lost just one of their last 11 Premier League games against promoted sides, with their matches against Fulham and Bournemouth this season both finishing goalless. Their only defeat in this run was at home to Brentford last season.
E. Dennis
Yellow Card
Nottingham Forest
16' Following a Forest corner delayed by lots of pushing and shoving in the box, Gomes heads clear for Wolves and Ait Nouri comes forward on the counter. He's felled by Dennis's mistimed challenge on halfway, and the striker picks up the game's first yellow card.
14' McKenna finds Dennis running into space down the left, but Kilman tracks him all the way and blocks his attempted pass out for a Forest throw.
12' Wolves have lost just one of their last seven league games against Nottingham Forest, winning four, although it was in their last such meeting with them in January 2018.
10' OVER!!! Forest's first corner of the match is swung towards the back post, where McKenna rises but can only head his effort just over the crossbar!
8' Podence cuts inside to find his captain, but despite chants of the crowd for him to shoot, Neves' first-time pass is a poor one and Forest re-gain possession!
6' After Traore does well to keep the ball in midfield, Neves aims to pick out the late run of Ait Nouri towards the back post, but his pass is overhit and goes behind for a goal kick!
5' This is the first ever Premier League meeting between Wolves and Nottingham Forest – they last met in the top-flight in March 1984, with Wolves winning 1-0 thanks to Paul Hart’s late own goal.
3' Neves puts Matheus into space down the right, and the Wolves playmaker does very well to hold off the attention of McKenna before winning a corner!
1' Moutinho almost puts Costa through on goal as he sneaks behind the Forest defence, but Henderson's out to claim the ball before the striker can latch onto it.
1' Moutinho kicks off for Wolves, and we're off and running at Molineux!
The teams head out onto the pitch, and we're nearly ready for kick-off in this Midlands derby!
Serge Aurier started against Villa last time out, but is dropped from the squad altogether for Forest, and Neco Williams comes into the team on the right-side of defence.
Captain Ruben Neves is a welcome returnee for Wolves, and takes his place in his preferred central midfield position alongside Joao Moutinho. Rayan Ait Nouri is also brought into the side, with Nelson Semedo and Goncalo Guedes moving to the bench.
NOTTINGHAM FOREST SUBS: Wayne Hennessey, Giulian Biancone, Joe Worrall, Orel Mangala, Taiwo Awoniyi, Jesse Lingard, Sam Surridge, Loic Bade, Willy Boly.
NOTTINGHAM FOREST (4-3-3): Dean Henderson; Neco Williams, Steve Cook, Scott McKenna, Harry Toffolo; Ryan Yates, Remo Freuler, Cheikhou Kouyate; Brennan Johnson, Emmanuel Dennis, Morgan Gibbs-White.
WOLVES SUBS: Matija Sarkic, Boubacar Traore, Hwang Hee-Chan, Yerson Mosquera, Goncalo Guedes, Nelson Semedo, Joseph Hodge, Hugo Bueno, Chem Campbell.
WOLVES (4-2-3-1): Jose Sa; Jonny Otto, Maximilian Kilman, Tote Gomes, Rayan Ait Nouri; Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves; Adama Traore, Matheus Nunes, Daniel Podence; Diego Costa.
Like Wolves, Forest are still waiting for their second win of the season, and despite surrendering a 1-0 lead to draw with Aston Villa last time out, Steve Cooper’s side will come into this game with confidence, against a side who have lost their last three straight games.
It’s a clash of two sides sat deep in relegation trouble, as managerless Wolves look to climb out of the bottom three with a win over the side directly below them.
