Two penalties from Holohan see League Two Grimsby Town into the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1939 after a shock 2-1 away win against Premier League Southampton. Grimsby went ahead from the spot in the first half after Lyanco was ruled to have handled the ball from Emmanuel's cross. Midfielder Holohan stepped up to convert and would double their lead in the second half - again from the spot - after Orsi went down theatrically after an incident with centre-back Caleta-Car. The Saints centre-back would pull one back for his side from a corner and the home side thought they had completed the comeback when Walcott scored late on. His strike was ruled out by VAR for offside, however, and Grimsby held on for a famous win and a place in the last eight of the FA Cup.

89' Walker-Peters lays it off to Caleta-Car on the edge of the box but the defender can't add to his one goal in the game and skies it high into the Southampton stands.

87' Glennon and Walker-Peters tussle down the Southampton right but the Grimsby defender ushers it out for a goal kick.

81' DISALLOWED!! Walcott thinks he has the vital equaliser for Saints but the goal is ruled out. Ward-Prowse takes a free-kick quickly and the equally quick-thining Walcott races onto the through ball. He controls it and finishes on the turn but the former Arsenal forward is fractionally offside and VAR rules it out.

77' CHANCE! Perraud falls asleep at the back and takes an awful touch from a high ball. McAtee nips in and races through on goal and is one-on-one with McCarthy but he lacks compsoure in the crucial moment and takes a heavy touch which crucailly allows the Saints keeper to close him down and claim the ball.

75' Saints have had 86% possession in the last five minutes as they look to hunt down an equaliser.

74' McAtee tries his luck from range but it is not troubling McCarthy.

70' Saints have come alive since the goal with Edozie and Djenepo causing serious problems down the wings for Grimsby. They win another corner but Lyanco fouls Waterfall as the ball comes in and Grimsby habe a free-kick.

69' Clifton fires a long shot on goal from a long throw but his effort is blocked. Saints look to break but Waterfall recovers well to make a superb challenge and prevent a shot on goal.

Ward-Prowse delivers from the corner and the away side switch off, giving the centre-back all the time in the world to volley home past Crocombe at the back post.

49' PENALTY! Grimsby have another penalty. A long ball over the top and there is a tussle and plenty of shirt pulling between Orsi and Caleta-Car. Orsi gives the centre-back a small nudge and the Saints defender turns and swipes at the striker with his forearm and the striker goes down rather theatrically. There is confusion, a VAR check and then a penalty given. It's perhaps a bit soft but Caleta-Car gives the referee a decision to make and he gives the penalty. What a moment of lunacy from the Saints defender.

47' Djenepo sees an early shot blocked and Saints have a corner but Grimbsy are able to defend it.

46' Southampton get this second half underway.

You would not want to be in the that Southampton dressing room right now. Selles has to inspire an improved performance from his Southampton side in the second half and on the basis of that first half, which was flat and lethargic, that will be quite some task. Hurst will be delighted with his side's performance. They've remained resoluted and restricted their opposition well. The task is simple: don't concede in the second period and their club have a place in the quarter-finals for the first time in 84 years.

A late first-half penalty from Holohan means Grimsby lead 1-0 against Southampton and are just 45 minutes away from one of the biggest victories in the club's history. In truth, the League Two side have hardly threatened and scored with their first shot of the game after Lyanco was adjudged to have handled the ball from an Emmanuel cross. Southampton, for all their possession, have lacked confidence and a clinical edge with Mara's offside goal and Orsic's curling effort the closest they have come to a goal. The Premier League side have it all to do in the second half to avoid a monumental upset.

45' + 1' GOOOALLLL!!! GRIMSBY TAKE THE LEAD! 1-0! Holahan converts the penalty and what a story this could be. Replays clearly show it was a penalty and the central midfielder steps up and coolly sends McCarthy the wrong way to open the scoring with their first effort of the game.

45' PENALTY!! Thomas Bramall checks the monitor and awards the penalty. Lyanco is ruled to have handled the ball as he attempts to head the ball away and what a chance for Grimsby to take the lead.

41' CHANCE! Grimsby nearly strike with their first strike on goal. Emmanuel has plenty of room on the right and delivers a tempting ball into the box. The ball bounces of Lyanco and falls into the path of Clifton. The midfielder takes a touch but McCarthy is off his line quickly to close down the midfielder as he looks to pull the trigger. However, there is a now lengthy VAR check for handball from Lyanco.

39' Djenepo looks to squirm into the area past Maher but the centre-back stands his ground and forces the the winger off the ball, winning a goal kick in the process.

36' There is a pause in play as Walker-Peters is down after a collision but the right-back is up and okay to continue.

32' Hunt goes flying into a challenge with an element of recklessness on Lavia and receives the first yellow card of the game.

31' Armstrong springs the offside trap but Crocombe is out quickly to grab the ball with the striker looking to pounce.

30' Mara creates space from range but his effort is scuffed and Crocombe gets down well to save the effort.

29' Grimsby are yet to register a shot on goal in this game but they have restricted Southampton to just one shot on target and 0.22 xG from their five total efforts.

25' Southampton work it cutely around the corner and Orsic has space again. The winger delivers a cross into the box but Alcaraz is unable to generate enough power from his stooping header to trouble the Grimsby goal.

23' WIDE! The best chance of the game so far falls to Orsic but it is just wide. Holohan gives the ball away under pressure in the midfield and Alcaraz breaks with the ball. He slides through the Croatian winger but his right-footed curling effort just evades the far post.

20' McAtee gets on the ball from deep on the right-hand side but miscues his attempted cross, which sails out for a goal kick.

18' OFFSIDE! Saints have the ball in the back of the net but it won't stand. Djenepo gets in behind and cuts it back into the path of Mara who slams it home but Djenepo is flagged to have been offside and VAR confirms it.

17' The away side have had just 16% possession so far in this game - they're growing into it but often have found players isolated when looking to put together passages of play.

13' Grimsby with their first venture forward and Efete takes a tumble in the area. There are half-hearted appeals for a penalty but nothing comes of it.

12' Djenepo makes a good burst towards the by-line and his cross is met by Armstrong. The striker looks to flick it on to Orsic but his header is miscued and claimed by Crocombe.

10' Another corner from Orsic is met by Caleta-Car but his header is blocked. Grimsby look to break but the move breaks down.

8' Saints are zipping the ball about positively in these early stages. Grimsby have failed to settle into this encounter and have hardly got on the ball at all so far.

4' Mara forces a sharp early save from Crocombe but the offside flag goes up so it wouldn't have counted regardless.

3' An early corner from Southampton bounces around but Orsic's eventual header is tame and claimed easily by Crocombe.

2' An early cross for Armstrong is poorly overhit and flies out for a goal kick.

This is the first meeting between Southampton and Grimsby Town in any competition since January 1978, when Saints won 4-1 in a second replay in the FA Cup third round after two goalless draws.

Hurst makes only one change to his Grimsby side that drew 2-2 with Leyton Orient with cup-tied striker George Lloyd replaced by Orsi-Dadomo.

Selles makes nine changes from his Southampton side that lost 1-0 against Leeds with Lavia and Perraud the only two to maintain their place. McCarthy replaces Gavin Bazunu in goal while Maitland-Niles, Bella Kotchap and Jan Bednarek all make way in defence for Walker-Peters, Lyanco and Caleta-Car. In midfield Stuart Armstrong, Ward-Prowse and Mohamed Elyounoussi are replaced by Orsic, Alcaraz and Djenepo and up front, Mara and Adam Armstrong come in for Kamaldeen Sulemana and Paul Onuachu.

Grimsby, meanwhile, are the lowest-ranked team left in the competition and will be looking to cause an almighty upset against their out-of-form opposition. Paul Hurst's side were promoted back into the Football League last year and currently sit 16th in League Two. They have beaten five opponents in divisions above them to reach this point and a historic victory here tonight would see them through to there first quarter-final since the 1938-39 season.

Southampton will come into this fixture hoping that a cup run can be the springboard for a much-needed uptick in league form. Saints have won just two league games in 2023 with Nathan Jones the latest to be sacked after just 14 games. Ruben Selles has now been appointed on a permanent basis until the end of the season but got off to a poor start with a 1-0 loss against relegation rivals Leeds. The Premier League side beat Crystal Palace and Blackpool to reach this point.
