Commentary

That is all for today. Goodybe.
Next up, Nottingham Forest travel to Molineux to face Wolves, with Aston Villa hosting Chelsea looking to continue their unbeaten run.
A wonder goal from Young helped earn Aston Villa a point at the City Ground as Nottingham Forest climb off the bottom of the Premier League table. Taking the lead for the third successive home match, losing the previous two 3-2, incoming striker Dennis latched onto a free-kick from Gibbs-White to give Cooper’s side the lead. However, their advantage in the match lasted just seven minutes, with Young smashing one in from just outside the box. Yates could only find the Villa man with a clearance, with the 37-year-old taking one touch before drilling a low shot past Henderson into the bottom corner. Watkins then thought he turned the scoreline in favour of the visitors, sliding in a low cross from Ramsey, but the flag went up for offside. The striker, who struggled to get involved throughout the 90 minutes, then had a low header saved by Henderson in the second half, with McGinn also missing the target with a diving attempt. Kouyate had the best second half attempt for Forest, but his powerful effort was held well by Martinez who sprung across his goal.
90' + 3' FULL-TIME: NOTTINGHAM FOREST 1-1 ASTON VILLA
90' + 2' Forest have a late free-kick and they are sending everybody forward.
90' + 1' Forest will go above Leicester in the Premier League table if the result remains the same as it is. Two minutes remaining.
L. O'Brien
M. Gibbs-White
Nottingham Forest
90' Substitution for Forest. Gibbs-White is replaced by O'Brien.
88' Archer bursts forward on the counter and plays a one-two with Watkins. Going from right to left, he then looks for Ings in the middle with a low cross but the ball is intercepted.
86' Young looks to beat Johnson down the left and goes down under the challenge of the Forest man. With the ball rolling out for a goal-kick, Young is unhappy that a free-kick is not given, with Johnson smiling after winning back possession.
85' Douglas Luiz has made five fouls in this game, more than any other player on either team.
83' Luiz's free-kick is met by Archer. He looks for a Villa man with his header across the goal, but the ball is cleared away. The pass was well to high, with Watkins free in the middle.
R. Yates
Yellow Card
Nottingham Forest
82' Yellow card for Yates after his elbow clatters into the face of Watkins as the striker ran down the left.
81' Surridge looks for Gibbs-White who was bursting behind the Villa defence but Mings cuts it out.
C. Archer
J. Ramsey
Aston Villa
81' Substitution for Villa. Ramsey is replaced by Archer.
80' It's another poor free-kick from Villa. Buendia is the third away player to hit the wall from a direct free-kick.
79' Villa have a free-kick on the right of the Forest box after Freuler clatters into the back of Buendia. The former Norwich man is over the ball.
L. Dendoncker
J. McGinn
Aston Villa
77' Substitution for Villa. It's a straight swap in midfield with McGinn replaced with Dendoncker.
76' Luiz and Johnson also clash heads after the challenge with the pair lucky to get away without a yellow card. They both seemed to have pushed their head forward during the confrontation.
J. Ramsey
Yellow Card
Aston Villa
75' Ramsey gets into another scuffle. This time it is with Williams with the two clashing after the Villa man pulled him to the ground.
74' Buendia looks for Watkins with a deep cross after tacking Gibbs-White who was rushing down the left but can only find Henderson who comes out quickly.
73' Gibbs-White puts the ball through the legs of Cash and looks to be running free down the left but is tackled by Luiz who covers well.
72' Dennis' poor run in the Premier League may be over. Dennis has ended on the losing side in all five of his Premier League appearances for Forest and is on an 11-game losing run in the competition, also losing his last six at Watford. He’s ended on the losing side in his last 14 home appearances, a record run for a player in Premier League history. He has more goals (5), assists (3) and yellow cards (4) than wins (2) in 19 such home appearances.
S. Surridge
E. Dennis
Nottingham Forest
71' Substitution for Forest. Dennis is replaced by Surridge in the attack.
70' Forest now have a chance. Luiz can only clear the ball to Kouyate on the edge, with the midfielder forcing Martinez into a diving save.
69' HE SHOULD DO BETTER! It's a poor attempt by McGinn. The midfielder bursts into the box and gets onto a cross from Watkins. He dives for the ball, directing the ball well wide of the post.
67' Cash looks for Ramsey in the box with a low pass but Forest clears the ball away.
D. Ings
Philippe Coutinho
Aston Villa
65' Substitution for Villa. Coutinho is replaced by Ings with the away side now playing with two recognised strikers. It is possible that Wakins will now play down the left with Ings leading the attack.
64' Gibbs-White finds shoots from the edge, but his shot goes well wide. He rolls Luiz on the outside of the box but his attempt with the outside of the boot is ambitious and never looked like troubling Martinez. Before his attempt, it had been 30 minutes since Forest last attempted a shot in this game.
62' Kouyate slides the ball down the left to Toffolo who overlaps him but his low cross is cleared by Luiz.
60' A corner from Luiz from the right looks for Konsa. The ball is cleared before it finds its way to Luiz once again. The midfielder then puts a deep cross towards Watkins with his low header saved well by Henderson.
N. Williams
S. Aurier
Nottingham Forest
58' It's a straight swap for Forest with Williams replacing Aurier at right-back.
57' Coutinho's cross is knocked away by Cook.
56' Ramsey displays his unhappiness after Yates barges into him. The referee speaks to both sets of players but nothing more is given than a free-kick to Villa just past halfway.
55' Gibbs-White bursts down the centre of the pitch before playing a one-two with Johnson. Running forward on the counter, the ball is held and Villa get men back.
53' Young looks to play a disguised pass towards Buendia inside the box but he gets it all wrong and the ball rolls out. Buendia throws his arms up in the air with the opportunity wasted.
J. McGinn
Yellow Card
Aston Villa
50' McGinn receives a yellow card after sliding down Johnson from behind.
49' Chance for Villa. McGinn slides the ball to Ramsey who bursts into the Forest box. He then looks to square the ball to Watkins who is free but McKenna intercepts.
48' Coutinho cuts in from the left after receiving the ball from Young but his wild strike goes well over the bar.
47' Luiz's corner is cleared. Dennis looks to run away on the counter, but he loses it and Villa have possession back.
47' Cash looks to beat Gibbs-White down the right but is tackled. Villa have a corner with Luiz over it.
46' Villa gets the game back underway for the second half.
Forest can take positives from Dennis’ first goal for the club on his full debut. However, they have struggled to get him involved in the game since his early strike. Johnson has also been quiet, taking just 18 touches in the first half. The same can be said about Watkins, who spearheads the Villa attack. Yet to have a shot, he has been crowded out by the Forest defence, with his only opportunity coming when he was well offside. Buendia and Coutinho have looked good in spells but have struggled to break down the home side.
Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa are level at the break. After a cagey opening, it was Cooper’s side who took the lead through a summer acquisition. Making his first start for Forest, Dennis got away from Mings to head a Gibbs-White free-kick past Martinez. Taking the lead in their previous two home fixtures, their advantage in the game lasted just seven minutes. 37-year-old Young slammed in the equaliser after a headered clearance from Yates fell to his feet. He shifted the ball into his right foot before drilling the ball low past Henderson. Briefly, Villa thought they had turned the game in their favour when Watkins slid in to put away a cross from Ramsey, but the striker was offside.
45' + 3' HALF-TIME: NOTTINGHAM FOREST 1-1 ASTON VILLA
45' + 2' A free-kick from Gibbs-White looks for Dennis but the ball goes well over the head of the striker and out for a goal-kick. The Villa fans cheer behind the goal.
45' There will be two minutes of additional time.
E. Konsa
Yellow Card
Aston Villa
45' Konsa gets Villa’s first yellow card after sliding down Gibbs-White. The Forest man was bursting forward with the ball after the away side failed to make the most of a corner.
43' Konsa slips a ball down the right finding Cash who lost his man. He then cuts the ball back to Rasmey but his cross is intercepted.
42' Freuler searches for Johnson with a pumped ball forward but it has too much pace on it and Mings sees it out for a throw-in. The Forest man never looked like he was getting on the end of the pass.
40' Forest have a chance to counter from a Villa throw in but the opportunity is wasted. The ball is fired into Dennis but the touch from the striker lets him down and the away side comes away with the ball.
38' Luiz looks to shoot from a tight angle, but his attempt is blocked by the wall. That's the second time today Villa have failed to beat the wall from a free-kick.
37' Young and Coutinho combine before Ramsey is pushed to the floor by McKenna. The ball is positioned to the left of the box with Luiz over it.
36' Cash puts a tame inswinging cross from the right straight into the gloves of Henderson.
35' Down the right, Yates finds Aurier who crosses towards Kouyate. Inside the left of the box, his tame header from a tight angle lands into the gloves of Martinez.
33' Dennis may be leading the line for Forest, but he continues to come deep for the ball. Often coming down the left, this time he is fouled after entering the Forest half on the right. He has not been involved in the game since scoring so has gone looking for the ball.
32' Before today, Forest had faced the most shots (136) and most shots on target (56) in the Premier League this season. Since 2003-04, only two teams have faced more shots on target in their first eight games in a season in the division: Blackpool in 2010-11 (57) and Hull City in 2016-17 (59).
30' Watkins' pace and physicality has been a problem for Forest. A long clearance goes forward to the striker, with the England international rolling McKenna before Cook clears the ball out for a throw-in.
28' Aurier is pushed to the floor by Wakins on the right and a free-kick is given. In a crossing position, they take it short but nothing comes of it.
S. Cook
Yellow Card
Nottingham Forest
27' Cook gets a yellow card after a high challenge on Ramsey just outside the box. Martinez bursts out of his goal to confront the referee but it is just a yellow for the Forest man.
24' OFFSIDE! Villa think they have scored, but the offside flag is up. Ramsey fires the ball across the box looking for a teammate and finds Watkins who slides the ball into the net. However, the striker's celebration is short-lived with the flag going up immediately.
A. Young
Goal
Aston Villa
22' GOAALLLL! WHAT A STRIKE BY YOUNG! 1-1! Villa are level. McGinn looks to switch the play and fires the ball towards Watkins. Aurier wins the first header before Yates looks to clear but he can only find Young on the edge who fires the ball into the bottom corner.
20' Gibbs-White commits a foul just inside the Villa half after pulling the shirt of Konsa. He comes away with the ball, believing that he won possession fairly.
S. Aurier
Yellow Card
Nottingham Forest
18' Aurier gets the first yellow card of the game. The free-kick is positioned just inside the Forest half with Coutinho over the ball.
17' Aston Villa have conceded 3 goals in the first 15 minutes of the first half, only AFC Bournemouth (5) have conceded more in the English Premier League this season.
M. Gibbs-White
Assist
Nottingham Forest
16' Gibbs-White finds Dennis with a delicate free-kick into the box. The striker then directs the ball low past Martinez.
E. Dennis
Goal
Nottingham Forest
15' GOALLLL! DENNIS SCORES! 1-0 FOREST! The home side takes the lead through Dennis. Two summer signings combine, with Gibbs-White’s cross from the right nodded in by Dennis. He runs off of Mings for a free header. The former Watford striker won the free-kick leading to the goal after being fouled.
14' Forest get into Villa's third. On the right, Johnson cuts in before sending the ball into the box. Looking for Gibbs-White, it is intercepted by Konsa who clears.
12' Coutinho and Luiz stand over the ball with the former taking the free-kick. Looking to curl one, his tame effort hits the wall and the ball ends up with Martinez.
11' Buendia wins a free-kick on the edge of the box after being tripped by Kouyate. On the left, there are multiple Villa players looking to shoot.
10' It looks like Aston Villa are playing a 4-3-3 formation, with Coutinho on the left and Buendia on the right of Watkins who leads the attack.
8' Cash bursts down the right with speed but sends a high and out for a throw-in. Playing against his former side, the reception has been muted.
7' This is the first league meeting between Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa since the 2018-19 Championship season, a 3-1 away win for Villa. The other game that season was a 5-5 draw at Villa Park.
5' Luiz plays the corner low to McGinn who rushes towards the edge of the box but his shot is blocked. It was tame and would not have troubled Henderson if it made its way through.
4' Villa have a corner after Ramsey's low cross deflects off of Aurier.
2' Forest got the game started, but it is Villa who have controlled the possession in the opening two minutes. However, they lose the ball after Young slashes a cross from the left out for a goal-kick.
1' Forest gets this Premier League clash underway.
In the Premier League, Nottingham Forest won just one of their 10 games against Aston Villa between 1992 and 1999 (D4 L5). In their one win against the Villans in October 1994, the referee was Keith Cooper, father of current Forest manager Steve.
As for Aston Villa, Steven Gerrard makes two alterations to the team that drew with Leeds at Elland Road. Out with an injury, Ludwig Augustinsson is replaced by Cash who starts against his former side. Leon Bailey, who was a doubt for the game, also does not make the squad. As a result, Buendia comes into the side and starts in attack alongside Watkins.
Nottingham Forest make five changes to the side that was beaten by Leicester last time out. Both full-backs are switched with Renan Lodi and Williams coming out for Toffolo and Aurier. Freuler also replaces O'Brien in midfield, with captain Yates prefered ahead of Lingard. Finally, Dennis gets his first Premier League start for Forest after five substitute appearances, with Awoniyi dropping to the bench.
ASTON VILLA SUBS: Danny Ings, Cameron Archer, Lamare Bogarde, Calum Chambers, Robin Olsen, Morgan Sanson, Leander Dendoncker, Jan Bednarek, Marvelous Nakamba.
ASTON VILLA (4-3-1-2): Emiliano Martinez; Matthew Cash, Ezri Konsa Ngoyo, Tyrone Mings, Ashley Young; Jacob Ramsey, Douglas Luiz, John McGinn; Philippe Coutinho; Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Buendia.
NOTTINGHAM FOREST SUBS: Wayne Hennessey, Lewis O'Brien, Willy Boly, Jesse Lingard, Orel Mangala, Joe Worrall, Taiwo Awoniyi, Neco Williams, Sam Surridge.
NOTTINGHAM FOREST (4-2-3-1): Dean Henderson; Serge Aurier, Steve Cook, Scott McKenna, Harry Toffolo; Cheikhou Kouyate, Remo Freuler; Brennan Johnson, Morgan Gibbs-White, Ryan Yates; Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis.
As for Aston Villa, they sit just two points above the relegation zone but are unbeaten in their last three games. Drawing with Manchester City and Leeds United on either side of a victory over Southampton, the Villans go into this one looking for their first away league victory of the season. Playing four times, their only point on the road came against Leeds in their previous match. Their only triumph playing away this campaign came against Bolton Wanderers in the EFL Cup.
Nottingham Forest slipped to the bottom of the Premier League table after losing to Leicester City last time out but will move back above their East Midlands rivals if they avoid defeat against Aston Villa. It was their fifth consecutive defeat in the league, but faith has been shown in manager Steve Cooper, with the 42-year-old signing a contract until 2025 during the week. Leading their previous two home games before falling to defeat, Forest will be looking to make it third time lucky today.
