South Africa Player Ratings: Williams shines as France embarrass Bafana Bafana

2:00 AM EDT 3/30/22
Ronwen Williams, Bafana Bafana, March 2022
The SuperSport United captain was the African side's best player as the team was hammered 5-0 by Les Bleus in a friendly match on Tuesday night
  • Ronwen Williams, Bafana Bafana, October 2020

    Ronwen Williams - 7/10

It could have been worse for Bafana if it wasn't for Williams.
The two-time PSL Goalkeeper of the Season made many saves to deny brace-hero Kylian Mbappe, Olivier Giroud and Lucas Digne throughout the game.
He also came close to saving Mbappe's penalty on a night in which he was let down by his defence.

  • Nyiko Mobbie, Bafana Bafana, August 2021

    Nyiko Mobbie - 4.5/10

Struggled against an excellent France side.

The hosts exposed Mobbie's frailties far too easily and he made one promising overlapping run, but his poor cross was easily gathered by keeper Mike Maignan.

  • Lyle Lakay, Bafana Bafana, November 2020

    Lyle Lakay - 4/10

Antoine Griezmann got the better of him on the night.

Lakay was outsmarted by the Atletico Madrid star who cut inside from Bafana's left flank and provided two assists while the Bafana full-back didn't offer much going forward.

  • Ibrahim Obrit, Uganda & Nkosinathi Sibisi, South Africa, June 2021

    Nkosinathi Sibisi - 5/10

Surprisingly started ahead of Rushine De Reuck.
Sibisi had his moments in bits and parts, making a few crucial clearances and tackles, but alas, it was nowhere near enough against the ruthless Europeans.

  • Siyanda Xulu, Bafana Bafana, March 2021

    Siyanda Xulu - 4/10

Assigned to man-mark Giroud due to the Bafana star's aerial prowess.

However, Xulu was simply outclassed by the tall French striker's unpredictable movement and he also lost his ground duels which saw him foul Mbappe, who converted the resultant penalty.

  • Teboho Mokoena, Bafana Bafana, August 2021

    Teboho Mokoena 4/10

Often been the battering ram for Bafana since coach Hugo Broos took over last year.

However, Mokoena was the one left battered by a rampant Les Bleus and his only contribution was his attempt from range which flew over the crossbar before he was substituted at half-time.

  • France's Adrien Rabiot in action against Bafana Bafana's Thabang Monare, March 2022

    Thabang Monare - 4.5/10

    Outplayed by Adrien Rabiot.
Monare couldn't stamp his authority in midfield as he did against Guinea on Friday with Rabiot streaming past him like he wasn't there.

  • Mothobi Mvala, Bafana Bafana, October 2021

    Mothobi Mvala - 5/10

Worked his socks off in midfield.

However, N'Golo Kante had too much quality for Mvala as the Chelsea star ran the show in midfield with the Bafana midfielder outclassed.

  • Fagrie Lakay of South Africa challenged by Brendan Galloway of Zimbabwe, November 2021

    Fagrie Lakay - 5/10

Failed to make an impact after being handed a rare start for Bafana.
Lakay was easily outmuscled by Presnel Kimpembe and he lost possession several times before being substituted at half-time.

  • Bongokuhle Hlongwane, Bafana Bafana, September 2021

    Bongokule Hlongwane - 5/10

Tried to make forward runs with the ball, but he lost possession.

Hlongwane didn't do anything else of note besides those few moments and he was replaced by Keagan Dolly after the restart.

  • Lyle Foster, Bafana Bafana, October 2020

    Lyle Foster - 5.5/10

Led the Bafana attack and he was very active.
However, there was a lack of supply from midfield and wings which left Foster frustrated upright, but he won his aerial duels when Bafana were defending set-pieces.

  • Goodman Mosele, Bafana Bafana & Kylian Mbappe , France, March 2022

    Goodman Mosele - 5/10

Came on at half-time as he made his Bafana debut, but the match just seemed to bypass him as the Les Bleus dominated the midfield battle and the game.

  • Khuliso Mudau, Mamelodi Sundowns, March 2022

    Khuliso Mudau - 3/10

Also introduced at half-time and he was targeted by the hosts' attackers which saw him make an unnecessary and dangerous challenge on Digne.

The Mamelodi Sundowns full-back was deservedly red-carded for his reckless tackle which led to Bafana being reduced to 10 players and they conceded their fifth goal.

  • Keagan Dolly, Bafana Bafana, October 2020

    Keagan Dolly - 5/10

Came on in the 66th minute when South Africa were looking pull one back, but he had no impact whatsoever.

  • Evidence Makgopa, Bafana Bafana, November 2021

    Evidence Makhopa - 5/10

He, too, was totally anonymous after coming on with 18 minutes left on the clock.

  • Bandile Shandu Orlando Pirates 2022.

    Bandile Shandu - 5/10

Failed to close down Matteo Guendouzi when the French midfielder took a shot at goal and scored with the new Bafana player having been introduced in the 80th minute.
