In the summer of 2013, Real Madrid broke the bank to sign Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur for a world record transfer fee of €100.8m, making him the first player with a transfer valuation of €100m.
For four years, Bale remained the most expensive transfer of all time until PSG shook the market in 2017 by roping in Neymar from Barcelona for a record fee of €222m.
In the same year, PSG made Kylian Mbappe's transfer permanent and in return paid AS Monaco €145m (+€35m) as fees. Mbappe did play for the Ligue 1 giants in the previous season but on loan.
Both PSG stars have helped the club to win several titles. While some clubs have benefited from spending millions, some players have miserably failed to live up to the hype and do justice to their massive fees.
