Caf Champions League: Mamelodi Sundowns' XI to face Al Ahly - Mvala, Domingo start

The Brazilians return to fielding their best squad after an unfamiliar lineup did Nedbank Cup duty against Mathaithai FC on Tuesday

Mamelodi Sundowns would be bidding to reach the Caf Champions League quarter-finals with two Group A games remaining when they host Al Ahly at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

This is how the Masandawana coaches have selected their starting lineup.

  • Kennedy Mweene, Mamelodi Sundowns, February 2022

    GOALKEEPER - Kennedy Mweene

    The 37-year-old shot-stopper frustrated Al Ahly with some wonderful saves in Cairo as Downs claimed a 1-0 win almost two weeks ago.

    With first-choice Denis Onyango still out injured, Mweene will be hoping to keep another clean sheet against the reigning African champions.

    RIGHT-BACK - Khuliso Mudau

    The in-form full-back will be brimming with confidence after being handed his first-ever Bafana Bafana call-up in midweek.

    Mudau was rested on Tuesday as Downs thumped Mathaithai 6-0 in the Nedbank Cup clash and he will be ready to deliver for the PSL champions.

    LEFT-BACK - Lyle Lakay

    The experienced full-back will also be celebrating his return to the Bafana squad having been one of Masandawana's standout performers this season.

    Lakay was also rested against Mathaithai having already played 30 club matches across all competitions this term.

    The gifted defender has been outstanding in this season's Champions League as he looks to establish himself as one of the best centre-backs based in Africa.

    De Reuck, who is a regular in the Bafana squad, has played a key role in helping Masandawana keep three successive clean sheets in the group stage.

    CENTRAL DEFENDER - Brian Mandela

    The former Maritzburg United star is enjoying his football at the Chloorkop-based side at the moment having re-cemented his place in the team's starting line-up.

    Mandela was among Downs regulars who were rested against Mathaithai and he will be bracing himself for another intriguing battle with Al Ahly's star forward Mohamed Sherif.

    CENTRAL MIDFIELDER - Mothobi Mvala

    With Rivaldo Coetzee not available, Mvala starts in the Champions League for the first time this season.

    The 2011 Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament was one of Downs' best players on the pitch against Al Ahly until he was substituted after the restart due to a minor injury.

    Jali has since recovered from the injury and he will be up against Al Ahly's Mali international Aliou Dieng in another must-watch midfield battle.

    The experienced playmaker captained Masandawana as they secured their biggest win of the season against Mathaithai.

    Zwane also got himself a morale-boosting goal against the ABC Motsepe League side and he will be confident of finding the back of the net when he faces the Red Eagles.

    After grabbing the goal that separated Sundowns and Al Ahly in the reverse fixture in Cairo two weeks ago, Morena has been rewarded with a starting spot.

    Domingo will be starting in the Champions League for the first time this season.

    This is his second appearance in the competition this term.

    The reigning PSL Footballer of the Season, who provided an assist as Downs defeated Al Ahly in Egypt, was given a well-deserved rest against Mathaithai.
