West Ham United v Olympique Lyonnais Live Commentary, 07/04/2022

1 - 1
J. Bowen (52)
T. Ndombèlé (66)
London Stadium

These two teams will meet again in Lyon next week then, with this quarter-final tie tantalisingly poised. Given West Ham's resilience here, a win away from home is by no means beyond them. That's all for now. Goodbye!
Moyes will be delighted with how his team responded to the setback of Cresswell's sending off. West Ham had just five shots in this game, their lowest in a Europa League game this season, but they defended admirably and were well worth a draw. Lyon will have to be at their best to get past them at Groupama Stadium next Thursday.
West Ham and Lyon will head into next week's second leg in France on level terms. It's a creditable draw for the Hammers in the circumstances, after Bowen gave the hosts a second-half lead despite their being reduced to 10 men late in the first half. Ndombele nabbed an equaliser for Lyon, but they weren't able to break down the Londoners again.
90' + 8' Lyon make a few last-ditch attempts to score. Areola spills a cross and Denayer's ambitious effort at goal is blocked. Tete tumbles theatrically on the edge of the box. To his credit, he gets straight up and doesn't appeal for a penalty. Lyon accidentally put the ball out of play and that's that!
90' + 7' Dawson makes a timely interception to prevent Dembele from getting past him. That's excellent defending at this late stage by the centre-back. West Ham don't have long left to hold on now.
J. Bowen
Yellow Card
West Ham United
90' + 5' Bowen picks up a late yellow card for barging into Emerson after the ball has gone out for a Lyon throw-in. The officials haven't endeared themselves to the West Ham faithful here, that's for sure.
90' + 4' Lyon are stil creating a few chances, but not enough to worry West Ham. Dembele powers a header way over the crossbar as he strains to reach Gusto's cross.
90' + 3' West Ham just have to keep their attention for a few more minutes. They'll be pleased with how they've handled playing this entire second half with 10 men.
90' + 1' Dawson is back up and ready to go, albeit with some cotton wool stuck up his bloodied nose. There'll be eight added minutes at the end of this match.
J. Denayer
Thiago Mendes
Olympique Lyonnais
90' Lyon make their change. Mendes goes off. Their Belgian defender Denayer comes on.
90' There's a brief delay as Dawson stays down after diving bravely into a defensive header. Lyon will make a change while West Ham's centre-back receives treatment.
M. Antonio
Yellow Card
West Ham United
88' Antonio's booked for a late tackle on Ndombele. The West Ham forward hasn't given Lopes much to do, but he's put in a lot of hard work for his team.
86' Paqueta tries his luck from distance. He's not lucky on this occasion. West Ham are able to counter! Ludicrously, another West Ham fan runs onto the pitch right as his team are on the attack. He won't be popular as he's escorted out of the stadium.
84' Ndombele attempts to free Dembele with a direct pass down the middle. It's not accurate enough to do so, and Areola eats up a few more seconds as he gathers and releases the ball.
83' Lyon's attacking substitute Toko Ekambi checks onto his right foot and shoots from the edge of the box. The shot's not close to testing Areola.
82' The West Ham fans have started singing I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles in an attempt to inspire their team over the line. They might still yet do better, as Bowen's cross from the byline deflects into the arms of Lopes.
80' Lyon keep probing. Emerson drifts into the left of the box and unleashes a low effort at goal. Areola holds it well.
78' West Ham are staying alert but they can't let their guard drop at all at the moment. Paqueta fires straight at Areola, stinging the goalkeeper's palms. West Ham are able to clear.
76' Fredericks latches onto Rice's inviting pass and forces Lyon to concede a corner down their right. Zouma launches himself at it but Lopes pushes the delivery aside.
76' Areola gets hold of the ball and takes his time to punt it down the pitch. West Ham are understandably keen to slow this game down now. Lyon are overeager to get forward and Dembele strays offside.
74' Tete has given Lyon some additional threat down their right since coming on. Ndombele's quick one-two doesn't work out. Gusto tries another cross. It doesn't pay off, but West Ham are under growing pressure.
72' Paqueta picks out Tete with a lovely switch of play. Tete's path to goal is blocked, but Lyon keep on pushing. Zouma nods Gusto's cross out for a Lyon throw-in.
70' Play's stopped briefly due to a pitch invader. With Ndombele's goal, Lyon have now scored in their last 13 Europa League games. They know what it takes to find the net at this level.
68' West Ham will be dismayed to concede that goal, but they're still capable of coming out of this with a positive result. Tete overcomplicates things to the right of the box and hands West Ham a goal-kick.
T. Ndombèlé
Olympique Lyonnais
66' GOAL! WEST HAM UNITED 1-1 LYON! Tete makes an instant impact by setting up Lyon's equaliser! The Brazilian jinks down the right and fires a dangerous cross into the six-yard box that Areola can't handle. The ball rebounds to Ndombele who's unmarked and prods it home.
64' If West Ham had doubled their lead, Lyon would be in real trouble. The visitors aren't messing around now. They're about to make their changes.
K. Toko-Ekambi
J. Boateng
Olympique Lyonnais
64' Lyon make an attacking change first. Boateng goes off. Toko Ekambi, Lyon's leading Europa League goalscorer this season, comes on.
R. Faivre
Olympique Lyonnais
63' Faivre gets replaced too. Tete, who's on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk, comes on for Lyon.
62' Bowen wins possession and shows great strength to bustle down the left and fling a cross into the box. He's got Antonio busting a gut to slot it in, but Lopes sees it coming and gets to it just in time!
60' Lyon are preparing their first substitutions. Bowen has taken Antonio's place up front for now. Antonio has slotted in on the right wing.
58' Ndombele blasts the ball towards goal from some way out. It's close, but misses to the right. Play's stopped. Fredericks needs treatment after a clash of heads with Dembele in the buildup to the shot.
56' Bowen's goal was his second Europa League goal of the season and his 14th in all competitions, four more than any other West Ham player. He's having a season to remember. West Ham have won every game they've played in the Europa League this season when they've scored the opening goal. If they can do so here, it'll be a fantastic result.
54' It'll be interesting to see how Lyon respond now. Ndombele wins a free-kick down the visitors' left as Bowen impedes his progress. Paqueta gets a shot away from the left of the six-yard box, but is unable to keep it down.
J. Bowen
West Ham United
52' GOAL! WEST HAM UNITED 1-0 LYON! West Ham have got the lucky break they need! Fornals intercepts Gusto's pass, allowing him to thread a ball into the box. It deflects off Boateng into the path of Bowen, who spins on the spot to loop it into the net! It's a big goal by West Ham's man of the hour!
51' Faivre goes for goal from distance, then Paqueta. West Ham stand firm. Antonio holds the ball up excellently and is sent scampering into the box by Fornals. The Jamaican international is muscled off the ball by Lukeba. The referee is in no mood to award a penalty.
50' Paqueta lines up a shot from just outside the box. West Ham hurry forward and get to the ball first.
49' Gusto stands up a cross from the right after latching onto Faivre's pass. It's an easy catch for Areola.
48' West Ham have switched to a narrow 4-4-1 formation. They're likely to have to do even more defending in this second half than they did in the first.
46' West Ham get the second half going. The officials were booed as the players came back out onto the pitch. If the hosts go on to lose this, you can tell who they'll blame.
B. Johnson
S. Benrahma
West Ham United
46' West Ham make a half-time substitution as they prepare to play with 10 men. Johnson replaces Benrahma, who looked quite dangerous in the first half.
Cresswell is the first ever West Ham player to be sent off in a major European competition. Moyes was furious with the officials and got booked as he went down the tunnel. You can understand why. The red card was a questionable call that might swing this match, and this tie, completely.
This game was going well for West Ham until the brink of half-time. The Hammers' gameplan succeeded in the first 45 minutes as they largely nullified Lyon's attack and created a few good chances on the break. Cresswell's dismissal for bringing down Dembele will change things now, as Lyon will fancy their chances more against 10 men. More of this to come!
45' + 4' Emerson spanks a left-footer into West Ham's defensive wall. Lyon get a corner to end the half. The hosts win the first header. Dembele turns and shoots on the edge of the box. It's blocked. West Ham end up getting a free-kick.
A. Cresswell
Red Card
West Ham United
45' + 3' RED CARD FOR CRESSWELL! Aouar sends Dembele running through on goal with a great ball down the middle. Cresswell collides with the striker, who instantly goes down. He's heading away from goal, but the referee pulls out his red card and West Ham are down to 10 men just before half-time! That could change this game dramatically.
45' + 2' Lyon have yet to have a shot on target in this game. West Ham have done an excellent job of blunting their attacking threat.
45' West Ham get a free-kick down their right when Paqueta stops Bowen's run. Rice plays it in but Lyon defend it well. There'll be two minutes added onto the end of this first half.
44' Soucek sticks his foot out and brings down Ndombele inside the centre circle. At first glance it looks like the Czech midfielder won the ball, but he didn't. West Ham come away with possession.
42' Lukeba dives in to meet the corner but misses his chance. West Ham counter and Benrahma wants a corner of his own as the ball goes out of play. Nope.
41' Lyon are having plenty of the ball in their own half, but West Ham aren't really letting them get anywhere in the final third. Emerson drifts inside and lets fly with his right foot. The shot takes a deflection, so it'll be a Lyon corner.
39' There's a brief confrontation between the two sets of players as Fredericks' run back into position is blocked by Emerson. The referee wades in to defuse the situation.
37' Boateng's first pass since coming back on is cut out to ironic cheers. West Ham look a little restless, but there's a long way to go in this tie yet.
35' Boateng gets to his feet to boos from the West Ham fans. The former Bayern Munich centre-back receives an interesting leg stretch from his physio before being allowed back onto the pitch.
34' Lyon ably defend West Ham's latest corner. The Hammers look to be gaining momentum until Boateng stays down after a clash with Fornals. The referee stops play to the frustration of the home fans and Moyes in the West Ham dugout.
33' Fornals sends Benrahma scampering down the left once again. The Algerian's cross isn't the best, but West Ham still get another corner out of it.
31' Fredericks' ball in is put out for a corner by Lukeba. The West Ham fans roar their support. It's rolled to Rice on the edge of the box, who tries to guide his shot into the far bottom corner. Lopes drops low to keep it out.
30' West Ham are growing into this game. Bowen's high cross from the right is beyond Soucek, but the Hammers manage to keep the ball. This is a promising spell for the hosts.
29' Fornals shows good vision to set up West Ham's latest attack down their left. Lyon are able to snuff it out without much difficulty.
28' West Ham earn a free-kick down their right as Lukeba impedes Antonio. Zouma's penalised for challenging for the ball in too forcefully.
26' West Ham are holding their defensive shape, waiting for Lyon to come onto them. It's a sound strategy. Ndombele gets impatient and lets rip at goal from range. His effort is well off target.
25' Benrahma teases Gusto but can't get past the teenage full-back. The 18-year-old manages to carry the ball away from danger.
23' Zouma cuts out Gusto's cross. It's a routine clearance. West Ham go up the other end. Antonio waits in the middle for Benrahma's delivery. The offside flag eventually goes up.
22' Aouar gets away from Fredericks and goes down in the box. He looks up hopefully, but he's getting nothing from the referee.
20' Areola rushes off his line to beat Dembele to a throughball. The Frenchman would have been through on goal had he been able to reach it.
18' Lyon keep coming. Emerson's low cross is cleared. Now West Ham can break! Antonio finds Fornals with a header and the Spaniard returns the favour. Antonio bursts into the box, and fires a shot against the sliding Lukeba.
17' Lopes gives away possession under pressure, but West Ham can't take control of the ball either. Lyon regain it and Aouar drives into the penalty area. His angled shot is blocked by Dawson.
15' Chance for West Ham! It comes from a quick ball out of defence by Dawson. Benrahma darts down the left, jinks into the box, and forces a smart save from Lopes. Lyon hurriedly clear.
14' West Ham are having to bide their time. Helpfully, Lyon's goalkeeper Lopes spoons a routine pass out for a throw-in. Soucek promptly catches Faivre with a high foot to give a foul away.
12' Paqueta is out of sync with his teammates, floating an over-the-top ball out of play. West Ham have had a quiet start to this game. Perhaps it's too quiet.
10' Dembele attacks Paqueta's fizzed cross from the byline, making a run towards the near post. It comes at the Frenchman almost too quickly, and he can't get his shot on target. That's a warning for West Ham.
9' Mendes picks out Gusto wide on the right, who passes inside. Lyon have no path through the middle though, as Paqueta's hopeful shot from range is blocked.
7' Benrahma tracks back to pickpocket Dembele before Lyon's captain can shoot from the edge of the box. That's good defending from the Algerian.
6' Dembele feeds Aouar down the left. Aouar curls the ball towards the far post with his right foot but there's no real threat from the cross. West Ham get a goal-kick.
5' Mendes plays the ball out wide to the teenager Gusto, who crosses first time. It's of no concern to Areola in West Ham's goal.
4' Soucek sends a pass down the line for Fredericks to chase. It's got too much power on it for the full-back to reach.
3' Fredericks steams into Aouar and prevents the winger from turning him down Lyon's left. Lyon don't achieve anything with the free-kick.
2' West Ham start the game patiently, dropping back as Lyon pop the ball around. It's only the first leg, so the Londoners need to make sure they don't get too caught up in the occasion.
1' The visitors Lyon get this quarter-final tie underway!
This is West Ham and Lyon's first ever meeting in Europe. The Hammers' only previous meeting with a French side in European competition was against Metz in 1999 in the Intertoto Cup. This is of course at another level altogether. Lyon are unbeaten in their last six meetings with English sides, most recently eliminating Manchester City from the Champions League in 2019-20. They're dangerous opponents, and this should be a hell of a tie.
Lyon start the same 11 that picked up a late 3-2 win over Angers in Ligue 1 at the weekend. Toko Ekambi, the joint-top scorer in this season's Europa League with six goals, starts on the bench.
West Ham boss David Moyes makes just one change to his team from their 2-1 victory over Everton in the Premier League last weekend. Their cup goalkeeper Areola replaces Fabianski in the starting 11. Otherwise, it's as they were.

Lyon may be floundering in mid-table in Ligue 1, but West Ham shouldn't take Peter Bosz's team lightly. OL saw off the Portuguese league leaders Porto in the round of 16 and have progressed from three of their last four European quarter-final ties. They'll be confident of making it to another semi-final.
This, quite simply, is West Ham's biggest game in years. After dispatching Sevilla in the round of 16, the Hammers welcome Lyon to London for their first-ever Europa League quarter-final, the club's fifth quarter-final tie in European competition. It's the type of game they moved to London Stadium for.
