Celtic signed the Kenyan star from Beerschot AC of Belgium in 2011.

It is at the Scottish club – where he chose jersey number 67 to honour Celtic's 1967 European Cup-winning team - where his career really took off.

But it is his Uefa Champions League goal against Barcelona that remains a standout highlight with the Premiership side.

His powerful header gave Celtic the opener as they went on to beat the Spanish giants 2-1 in a group stage game in November 2012 at Celtic Park.

Wanyama became the first Kenyan to play in English Premier League when he joined Southampton from Celtic in July 2013.

In September 2014, he scored his first goal for the club against Swansea City, before the second one came against Sunderland in October. His performances saw him awarded the African Player of the Month for September, beating Senegal and West Ham United’s Diafra Sakho.

His third was a spectacular strike against Hull City when he struck from 40-yards away to give the Saints a 1-0 win.

After impressing at Southampton, Wanyama secured a move to North London when he was signed by Spurs in June 2016.

This represented an upward career move for the Kenyan, who went on to make regular starts under manager Mauricio Pochettino in his first season.

He scored his first goal for Tottenham on his home debut against Crystal Palace and handed his side a 1-0 win, becoming the 138th different player to score for the club, extending its record for the most different goalscorers for a single club in the Premier League.

Despite suffering from a knee injury that mostly sidelined him in the 2017/18 campaign, Wanayama made a season's mark with a goal against the Reds.

He equalized for Spurs in a 2-2 draw against Liverpool in February 2018 and the goal was voted the Premier League Goal of the Month.

The midfielder was part of Tottenham’s matchday squad that faced Liverpool in the Champions League final in 2019 in Madrid.

Although he did not play as Spurs lost 2-0 to the Reds, he became the second Kenyan to be named in a squad the competition’s final after McDonald Mariga – his elder brother – did so in 2010 with Inter Milan.

Wanyama made his Harambee Stars debut aged 15 in May 2007 against Nigeria in a friendly game.

He also featured in all of Kenya's 2010 Fifa World Cup qualifiers before he was named the captain in 2013.

He announced his international football retirement in September 2021, and that marked the end of his 14-year involvement with the Harambee Stars.

    2019 Afcon Presence

The return to the continental finals in Egypt was a monumental achievement for the East Africans as they had missed the stage since 2004, a 15-year absence.

Wanyama guided Harambee Stars as they made a return since appearing in the Tunisia finals, and even though they did not progress to the knockout stage, captaining the team at Afcon remains a career highlight for him.
