A much-changed Masandawana side claimed a narrow win over the Rockets as the Tshwane giants continued their incredible form in the PSL

Mamelodi Sundowns overcame TS Galaxy 2-1 on Tuesday despite coach Rhulani Mokwena making eight changes to the team which faced Kaizer Chiefs over the weekend.

Therefore, the Brazilians showed their strength in depth with the likes of Sphelele Mkhulise and Gaston Sirino catching the eye during the game which took place at Mbombela Stadium.

GOAL ran the rule over the individual performances of the Sundowns players.

  • Denis Onyango, Mamelodi Sundowns, October 2021

    Denis Onyango - 5/10

Unconvincing display after being handed his maiden league start this term.
Onyango made two routine saves, but his judgement was poor at times and he conceded a penalty after fouling Ofentse Mongae in the box after leaving his goal-line early.

  • Thapelo Morena, Mamelodi Sundowns, September 2022

    Thapelo Morena - 6/10

Not at his best on his return to the team.

Morena was highly pro-active in the right flank as usual, but this time he lacked the final ball on the night.

  • Sifiso Ngobeni of Mamelodi Sundowns.

    Sifiso Ngobeni - 7/10

    Played much better than Morena.
Ngobeni was influential when pushing forward, combining well with his teammates and delivering decent crosses. He was also solid defensively.

  • Grant Kekana, Mamelodi Sundowns, 2022

    Grant Kekana - 7/10

    Solid performance.
Kekana stepped up whenever Galaxy were on the attack, with important clearances and interceptions. He was substituted towards the end of the game and Downs conceded.

  • Rushine de Reuck, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2022

    Rushine de Reuck - 7.5/10

De Reuck was strong in possession and dominant in the air which saw him break the deadlock with a header. However, he was substituted just 16 minutes into the game due to an injury.

  • Andile Jali Mamelodi Sundowns.

    Andile Jali - 7/10

Showed his qualities amid uncertain Downs future.
Jali's ball-winning ability was on full display and he also rarely gave the ball away as he sparkled as a deep-lying midfielder.

  • Sphelele Mkhulise, Mamelodi Sundowns, May 2022

    Sphelele Mkhulise - 8.5/10

His midfield partnership with Jali was brilliant.
Mkhulise constantly forced the ball forwards, won tackles and took people on to keep Sundowns playing into the final third. He was deservedly named Man of the Match.

  • Sipho Mbule, Mamelodi Sundowns, January 2023

    Sipho Mbule - 6/10

Handed his third league start for Downs.
Mbule made a few nice one-touch passes but he was too slow and not physical enough in the first half. He was substituted while looking exhausted in the second-half.

  • Themba Zwane, Mamelodi Sundowns, January 2023

    Themba Zwane - 5.5/10

Tried to make things happen for Downs.
Zwane shuttled between the front line and midfield in the first-half. However, his performance waned after the restart and he was withdrawn.

  • Gaston Sirino Mamelodi Sundowns.

    Gaston Sirino - 8/10

Downs' best attacker on the night.
Sirino was bright from the start and continually looked to drift into open spaces to hurt Galaxy himself. His delivery from set-pieces was also fantastic which saw him grab an assist when De Reuck headed home his corner-kick.

  • Peter Shalulile Mamelodi Sundowns.

    Peter Shalulile - 7.5/10

A true hard worker who got rewarded.
Shalulile pressed and harried the Rockets defence and was consistently looking to drive forward. He received his just rewards after comfortably slotting the ball home for Downs' second.

  • Brian Mandela, Mamelodi Sundowns, February 2022

    Brian Mandela - 5/10

Looked shaky after replacing De Reuck and he was bullied by Traore who ended up scoring.

  • Erwin Saavedra of Mamelodi Sundowns.

    Erwin Saavedra - 6/10

The Bolivia international showed excellent forward drive and vision having been introduced in the 69th minute.

  • Bradley Ralani, Mamelodi Sundowns, March 2022

    Bradley Ralani - 5/10

Never a threat to the Rockets' defence as he was quickly closed down by the hosts having been intrroduce in the 69th minute.

  • Bongani Zungu, Mamelodi Sundowns, October 2022

    Bongani Zungu - 5.5/10

Added some zip to the midfield when he came on with 15 minutes left, but he was unspectacular.

  • Mosa Lebusa, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2022

    Mosa Lebusa - 6/10

Looked assured in central defence when he came on in the 75th minute and he made a few clearances.
