Met by an understandably unambitious Wales side, England have controlled proceedings so far in Al Rayyan, without often threatening to break the deadlock. England are on the verge of reaching the last 16 once again, but will also aim to qualify as group winners by bouncing back from a disappointing draw with the United States. They can advance simply by avoiding a four-goal defeat, but victory would guarantee first place. However, the Three Lions have managed just one win from their last eight matches. Today marks the first time two British teams have met at the World Cup, but the nations are set to do battle for the 104th time overall - with England winning the last six in a row.
The final round of Group B fixtures sees everything left to play for - all four teams can still progress - but Wales must certainly win today in order to stand a chance of reaching the last 16. In the Dragons' only other World Cup appearance, back in 1958, they were eliminated by Brazil in the quarter-finals, but are now bottom of their group after a dismal defeat to Iran. Rob Page's side must therefore beat England and hope the USA draw with Iran, or instead win by at least four goals to advance.
