Everton v West Ham United Live Commentary, 18/09/2022

1 - 0
N. Maupay (53)
Goodison Park

That's all for today, goodbye!
That win lifts Everton up to 13th in the table, and they have a trip to Southampton after the international break. West Ham are now winless in their last three league matches and stay in the relegation zone. Next up for them is Wolves at home.
Everton win their first Premier League game of the season, beating West Ham 1-0. The game took a long time to get going, with neither side showing a big threat in the first half. After the break, Everton came out quickly and Maupay thumped a shot into the near post for his first Toffees goal. West Ham pushed for an equaliser and hit the post through substitute Benrahma's whipped effort, but they couldn't find a way through.
G. Scamacca
Yellow Card
West Ham United
90' + 5' The yellow card is out again, this time for Scamacca. Gueye was jumping to clear his lines when the substitute clattered into him, making no attempt to play the ball.
D. McNeil
Yellow Card
90' + 4' Coufal dispossesses McNeil at the byline, so he tries to block the right-back's clearance, catching him in the process. He's booked for it.
A. Cresswell
West Ham United
90' + 3' Final roll of the dice for West Ham here as Emerson replaces Cresswell.
90' + 2' GOOD SAVE! Bowen is still getting a lot of joy down the right and he gets past Mykolenko to lift a cross in. It swerves in the air and Begovic is forced to tip it over his crossbar.
90' + 1' Into the first of five added minutes here, and West Ham are still patiently pushing forward. They're trying to work it down their left, but Cornet is crowded off the ball and Everton are able to break.
S. Rondón
N. Maupay
89' Final change for Everton now as the goalscorer, Maupay, goes off for Rondon.
88' WHAT A CHANCE! Bowen flicks on Zouma's long ball and Coady misjudges the bounce of it, with Cornet hovering behind him. The substitute takes it around Begovic but then fires it into the side netting from a tight angle.
86' It's another poor backpass from Soucek, and it rolls past Zouma as Maupay gives chase. Luckily for Soucek, Coufal gets there first and clears the danger for West Ham.
84' GOOD SAVE! This time, Rice slides it into Cornet down the left, and he has space ahead of him. He takes the shot from an angle, getting a lot of power behind it, but Begovic pushes it over.
83' West Ham work it well down their left side again and Rice clips in a cross. It takes a deflection off Doucoure, and Scamacca stretches for it at the far post, but can't bring it down.
A. Doucouré
D. Gray
81' Second change for Everton now and it's Gray that's making way for Doucoure.
80' Onana is down receiving treatment for what seems to be a thigh problem. He's moving gingerly when he gets back to his feet, but it looks like he's going to stay on.
79' Patterson overruns the ball as he tries to carry it away from the box and Soucek nicks it off him. Rice tries to slide it through to Benrahma in the box, but Begovic is quickly off his line to collect it.
77' CLOSE! Gray crashes into Kehrer as he tries to open up space for the shot, but the defender's block falls to Iwobi. He curls his shot towards the far top corner, but it sails just over the bar.
D. McNeil
A. Gordon
74' Everton are making their first change now as McNeil comes on in place of Gordon.
74' OFF THE POST! It's a poor pass from Tarkowski to Gueye, and Soucek steps in to intercept it. He touches it through to Benrahma, who whips his shot from just outside the D. Begovic is static on his line and can only watch as it smacks off the inside of the post.
72' Bowen knocks it out to Benrahma on the right and he rides the challenge from Mykolenko before cutting into the box. He tries to clip it into Scamacca, but Begovic gets there ahead of him.
G. Scamacca
M. Antonio
West Ham United
70' Third change for West Ham as Scamacca comes on in place of Antonio.
68' CLOSE! Cresswell whips in a brilliant corner and Soucek gets in front of the crowd at the near post to flick it on. It takes a nick off Coady on the way through and Rice can't react quick enough for a tap-in on the far side.
66' Maupay's goal is the first that he's scored in the Premier League since February against Watford, ending a run of 12 games without a goal in the competition.
64' GREAT CHANCE! The West Ham defenders sit back as Gray advances towards the box, so he drags it past Coufal and fizzes another dangerous ball across the face of goal. All it needs is a touch, but no one is there for Everton.
A. Gordon
Yellow Card
62' Gordon slides in on Cornet from behind, clipping the substitute's heels, and he receives a yellow card for the challenge.
S. Benrahma
Pablo Fornals
West Ham United
61' West Ham are making a double change as they look to get themselves back on level terms. Fornals is the first to go off, with Benrahma replacing him.
M. Cornet
Lucas Paquetá
West Ham United
61' And Paqueta is taken off for Cornet.
61' BLOCK! Fornals finds himself in space down the left again and he squares it into Bowen on the edge of the D. He sets himself before trying to place a shot, but it's well blocked by Tarkowski.
59' Iwobi peels off the back of Coufal, and West Ham look for an offside flag that isn't coming. He overhits the cross into the box though and the unmarked Gordon can't do anything with it.
57' Fornals tries to switch it out to Bowen on the right, but Mykolenko makes a brilliant interception. Everton are caught out by the quick throw-in though, with Bowen getting a chance from a tight angle, but Begovic smothers it.
55' West Ham lose the ball high upfield again, and Everton break quickly on the counter through Gray down the left. He fizzes a dangerous, low cross into the six-yard box, but nobody's there for the hosts.
A. Iwobi
53' Iwobi is also in a tight spot with the ball, but he gets his head up to tee up Maupay just inside the box.
N. Maupay
53' MAUPAY SCORES! He's in between three West Ham defenders when Iwobi slides the ball into him, but he controls it on the turn and takes the shot quickly. Fabianski scrambles across his line, but can't stop it from nestling in the bottom corner for his first Everton goal. 1-0 Everton!
52' West Ham remain the only side yet to score a first-half goal in the Premier League this season. Their run of seven games without a first-half goal is their longest in the competition since January 2019 (also seven).
50' SAVE! Everton finally have their first shot on target as Gray cuts inside from the left. He uses Coufal as a shield, curling his shot around the defender, but it's straight at Fabianski.
48' GOOD CHANCE! Cresswell slides Fornals in at the byline with a reverse pass and he clips a good cross into Bowen, who is unmarked in the middle. He takes the shot on the volley, firing it over the bar.
47' It's a wonderful first-time cross in from Mykolenko on the left, and Zouma stretches to take it away from Gray. Fabianski collects, but all three players collide as the referee points for a corner which comes to nothing.
46' Everton get us back underway for the second half!
Neither manager looked too happy on the sideline going into half-time. Everton's final ball into the box let them down throughout the first half, while West Ham looked dangerous on the counter, without creating too much of note. Both Lampard and Moyes will be looking for a big improvement after the break.
It's goalless at the break between Everton and West Ham. It's been a match of very few chances so far, with only two shots on target, both courtesy of West Ham. Paqueta and Zouma both had headers saved, but they were comfortable ones for Begovic. At the other end, Everton have only had two efforts - Onana came close with a header while Mykolenko blazes his high over the bar.
45' + 1' The corner is half-cleared by Mykolenko to Rice and he loops a good ball into Zouma just inside the box. He flicks a header on, lifting it over the crowd, but it's straight at Begovic.
44' A heavy touch from Patterson sees Everton caught high upfield as West Ham break on the counter. Coufal sends it down the right for Antonio and he bursts past Mykolenko only for Tarkowski to slide in with another important tackle.
42' Everton win a free-kick in a good position down the left, and Gray teases a good cross into the far post. None of his team-mates attack it though and it flies harmlessly out of play.
40' West Ham just don't deal with the corner into the box and Onana hooks it back towards the near post. Iwobi spins, clipping a cross into the middle, but it's too high for Coady and Fabianski collects.
38' Antonio is hovering behind Begovic as he waits to distribute the ball. He rolls it out to Tarkowski, not realising how close the forward is, but Everton just manage to clear their lines in time.
36' Everton are just slowing the pace of the game down at the moment, working it between their back line to try and draw West Ham out of their compact shape.
34' Gray has switched out to the left to try and get on the ball and he's found in space by Maupay. He whips a good cross into the far post, but Kehrer makes an important clearance in front of Onana.
32' Everton's final ball into the box is just letting them down at the moment. Iwobi and Gray link up well down the left, but then Mykolenko drills his low cross straight at Soucek.
30' It's a poor free-kick from Coufal down the right, but Cresswell hooks it straight back into the danger area when the clearance falls to him. The bounce catches out Tarkowski and Antonio is chasing it down, but Begovic collects.
C. Coady
Yellow Card
28' Antonio tries to spin away from Coady, but the defender steps across him to stop the run and sees the first yellow card of the game.
26' West Ham are enjoying a good spell of possession here and it's switched out to Coufal on the right again. He plays a clever one-two with Bowen before winning another corner, but Paqueta's header is straight at Begovic.
24' Everton break quickly on the counter with Maupay leading the charge down the left. He squares it to Patterson on the edge of the box as he continues his run into the box, but he can't get on the end of the return cross.
22' Begovic punches away West Ham's third consecutive corner and gets it as far as Cresswell on the edge of the box. He hits it on the half-volley, but Gray's block takes it out for another corner, which Everton clear this time.
20' West Ham up the pace again, and Bowen is causing a lot of problems early on here. He whips another dangerous cross into the box, but Tarkowski gets in front of Paqueta this time.
18' Bowen does well to get out of a tight spot and pick out Antonio with the pass. He brushes Coady aside at the halfway line before driving to the edge of the box where he's stopped by Tarkowski.
16' West Ham have won both of their last two Premier League away games against Everton, each by a 1-0 scoreline. They've never won three consecutive trips to Goodison Park in their league history.
14' It's a wonderful pass from Bowen to set Antonio away down the left, but he's caught by Gueye as he does. The midfielder stepped on his ankle, but he's okay to carry on after treatment.
12' CLOSE! Gray wins a free-kick down the right and he steps up to take it. He lifts a good cross towards the far post where Onana is unmarked, but he flicks his header wide.
10' It's a lovely bit of footwork from Gordon to get past Kehrer, but Soucek sticks out a leg to stop him. Iwobi keeps it alive by poking it out to Patterson on the right, but he sees another cross blocked.
8' West Ham go straight up the other end and Bowen does well to dribble his way past Mykolenko at the byline. He fizzes a low cross into the middle but Coady makes a vital interception ahead of Antonio.
7' Soucek plays a loose pass back to Zouma and Maupay pounces onto it. Unselfishly, he tries to tee up Iwobi, but he takes a heavy touch as Fabianski closes him down and it rolls out for a goal-kick.
6' There's no way down the left for Everton, so Iwobi takes it back and they work it well out to the right. Patterson swings a deep cross into the box, looking for Gordon, but Fabianski plucks it out of the air.
4' Paqueta picks Onana's pocket and surges forward on the counter. His throughball into Fornals takes a deflection, but he wins a corner as Coady can't stop it from running out of play. Nothing comes of it though.
2' Everton win a free-kick deep in their own half, and they work it well down the right from Patterson to Gray. He fizzes it into the box for Maupay to chase, but Fabianski rushes off his line to collect it.
1' Paqueta gets the game underway for West Ham!
The teams are out on the pitch now, with kick-off just moments away. A minute's silence took place beforehand in honour of Queen Elizabeth II.
Everton have won more Premier League games (27) and scored more Premier League goals (88) against West Ham than they have versus any other opponents. However, they've lost three of their last four against the Hammers (W1).
David Moyes makes six changes from the win over Silkeborg on Thursday. Fabianski starts in goal, with Zouma, Soucek, Fornals, Bowen and Anotino also brought in. Areola, Dawson, Lanzini, Emerson, Cornet and Scamacca all drop to the bench.
Lampard makes just two changes to the side that drew with Liverpool two weeks ago. Jordan Pickford picked up a thigh injury in that game, so Begovic starts in goal, and Gueye makes his second full debut for the club. Davies starts on the bench, with Doucoure also fit enough to be named as a substitute.
WEST HAM SUBS: Emerson, Maxwel Cornet, Said Benrahma, Gianluca Scamacca, Angelo Ogbonna, Flynn Downes, Craig Dawson, Alphonse Areola, Manuel Lanzini.
WEST HAM STARTING XI (3-4-2-1): Lukasz Fabianski; Thilo Kehrer, Kurt Zouma, Aaron Cresswell; Vladimir Coufal, Tomas Soucek, Declan Rice, Pablo Fornals; Jarrod Bowen, Michail Antonio; Lucas Paqueta.
EVERTON SUBS: Michael Keane, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Tom Davies, Ruben Vinagre, James Garner, Eldin Jakupovic, Dwight McNeil, Salomon Rondon, Seamus Coleman.

Neither side has had a great start to their league season, sitting in 17th and 18th place respectively, with Everton only sitting above the relegation zone on goal difference. Frank Lampard's team are still looking for their first Premier League win of the season, but after losing their opening two games, they've drawn their last four outings. West Ham have won just once in the league this campaign (D1 L4). They've played twice since Everton last did though, and won both of those outings in the Europa Conference League.
