Commentary

That is all for today - thanks for tuning in!
It's back to league action for both sides at the weekend, with Madrid hosting Getafe while City travel to face Everton.
De Bruyne's long-range strike cancelled out Vinicius' sparkling first-half effort as it ends 1-1 between Madrid and City in the first leg of this Champions League semi-final tie. City enjoyed the lion's share of the ball in the first half but it was a beautiful hit from Madrid's big-game player that broke the deadlock before the break. Madrid looked to press home their advantage after the interval with Ederson called into action numerous times to keep the home side at bay before De Bruyne levelled the scoreline superbly with his own thunderous strike from the edge of the box. We now await the second leg at the Etihad Stadium next week to see which one of these footballing heavyweights will progress to the final in Istanbul.
90' + 3' FULL-TIME: REAL MADRID 1-1 MANCHESTER CITY
90' + 3' Nacho looks to shoot from range but it deflects off Silva and into the grateful arms of Ederson.
90' + 2' Camavinga gets into space down the right wing. The Frenchman cuts inside onto his right but Walker stands firm and makes the vital block as the Madrid midfielder looks to strike one into the far corner.
90' SAVE!! A real chance late on for Madrid and Ederson has to be at his best to palm away Tchouameni's swerving effort from the edge of the box. A slew of half chances for Madrid from the resulting corner but City block and clear them away.
89' Grealish makes a good burst through the middle of the pitch but Rudiger makes an all-important block as Haaland looks to peel into space to receive the Englishman's pass.
87' Madrid deliver their latest corner but Dias, this time, rises well to head away the danger.
Nacho
L. Modrić
87' Before the corner is taken, Modric makes way for Nacho.
86' Modric whips in the free-kick from the left edge of the box. Rodri rises well to head away the danger but City concede a corner shortly after.
Bernardo Silva
Yellow Card
86' Silva looks to clear the ball away but Vinicius sneaks in and the Portuguese midfielder receives a yellow as he takes out the Brazilian winger.
A. Tchouaméni
T. Kroos
84' Madrid's second change swiftly follows as Tchouameni comes on in central midfield in place of Kroos.
Marco Asensio
Rodrygo
81' Less than ten minutes to go but we finally have our first sub of the game as Rodrygo makes way for Asensio.
E. Camavinga
Yellow Card
79' Camavinga is late on Rodri in the middle of the park and the Frenchman is shown a yellow card.
78' SAVE!! Ederson has been the quieter of the two goalkeepers but he pulls out a massive save to keep the scores level. Benzema rises well at the back post to meet Kroos' cross but the City keeper gets a good hand on it down to his right to palm away the effort.
77' Gundogan's cross-field pas sails out for a throw-in, perhaps the first signs of nerves in this finely-poised match. Madrid attack down the right but City do a good job of getting numbers back in defence and the cross is cleared.
74' De Bruyne has been all over the pitch for City tonight and his latest cross has to be header away by a diving Rudiger inside the Madrid box.
72' Alaba tries his luck with the free-kick. It's a tough angle and the Austrian can't get the ball to dip quickly enough as it whisks over the bar.
İ. Gündoğan
Yellow Card
71' Gundogan gives away the ball cheaply and is shown a yellow after he brings down Carvajal on the edge of the box.
69' There's a slight delay after the goal and Ancelotti is shown a yellow card on the touchline. Madrid are complaining heavily but the goal stands.
İ. Gündoğan
Assist
67' Gundogan with a simple lay off before a sparkling hit from De Bruyne to bring City level.
K. De Bruyne
Goal
67' GOOOOOAALLLL!!! CITY LEVEL!! 1-1!! Anything Vinicius can do, De Bruyne can do just as well - it's a thumping strike from the City midfielder and the away side are level. Gundogan lays it off to him on the edge of the box, the Belgian slices across the ball with an immaculate technique and the ball rockets into the bottom-right corner. A timely equaliser after a good period of pressure from Madrid.
67' Rodri lines up a speculative effort from long range but Modric gets in the sliding block.
65' Modric makes a good burst down the right and no City player goes with him. He cuts it back to Rodrygo but the Brazilian can't get an effort on goal before City then block Benzema's effort from the edge of the box.
63' Silva looks to sneak around the back post but De Bruyne's cross has too much on it and it drifts out for a goal kick.
62' Benzema now finds himself in the box as Madrid continue their period of good pressure. The Frenchman tries to find Valverde in the box but Grealish does good work tracking back and it flies out for a goal kick.
60' This time the ball arrives at the feet of Valverde outside the box but his well-hit drive flies high over the bar.
59' Kroos now lines up a curling effort but City do well to block the effort. Vinicius tries to clip a ball back into the box but Stones blocks it behind for yet another corner.
58' Nobody can get the ball off Vinicius as he jinks inside from the right. His effort is deflected out for a corner before Grealish does well to close down Rodrigo's effort as Madrid win another corner.
56' City again with a poor delivery from the corner and Madrid win a goal kick.
55' De Bruyne tries his luck from outside the box this time but his left-footed curling effort doesn't threaten Courtois who makes a comfortable save. City win the ball back quickly and this time it is Alaba with an inch-perfect sliding tackle to stop Haaland from getting a shot off.
52' SAVE!! Courtois made some good stops in the first half but that's the best of the bench to stop De Bruyne. The Belgian ghosts in behind the Madrid defence and bears down on goal from the right side. He strikes across goal but the Belgian keeper spreads himself superbly and gets a strong right hand on the ball to deny his effort.
51' Ederson does well to punch clear the first cross before Rodri shows superb defensive nous to win a foul after a one-on-one against Vinicius on the left side of the box.
50' Camavinga is popping up in midfield more frequently in this second half and a good period of possession for the home side allows Benzema to fire on goal from a tight angle. It's deflected behind by Stones and Madrid have their first corner of the half.
48' Carvajal makes an important sliding interception as City win the first corner of the half. It's played short but Courtois can claim De Bruyne's eventual cross.
46' No changes at the break and Madrid get us underway in this second half.
Death, taxes and Real Madrid finding a way in the Champions League. One shot, one goal and they are ahead. They've done a good job at restricting City to long-range efforts but you wouldn't blame the away side from being somewhat frustrated after that first-half performance which saw them control large portions of the game but Guardiola must now rouse his players for this crucial second half. A 1-0 deficit is certainly not fatal but any more and it could present an almighty tough task in the second leg.
A thunderous strike from Vinicius is the difference between the two sides as Madrid lead 1-0 at home against City as we reach half-time. It was Guardiola's side who made the more positive start with Courtois called into action to deny long-range efforts from De Bruyne and Rodri but it is the home side that have the lead courtesy of a truly spectacular effort from Vinicius in the 36th minute. City have been the better side and created space often down the flanks but they have it all to do in the second 45 minutes.
45' + 3' HALF-TIME: REAL MADRID 1-0 MANCHESTER CITY
45' + 3' De Bruyne floats in the ball from deep but Courtois is quick off his line to punch the ball away and that's the half.
T. Kroos
Yellow Card
45' + 3' Kroos with an awfully high challenge on Gundogan and he's the first player into the referee's book.
45' Carvajal goes down dramatically after an incident with Grealish but the Spaniard is back up on his feet and we are into the first of two minutes of added time here at the end of the first half.
42' City now have a corner after good work from Silva down the right. Haaland can't get on the end of it but it's turned behind for a corner. De Bruyne delivers but Rodri commits a foul and the move breaks down.
41' Having looked threatening after their goal, Madrid now revert back to their defensive shape in which they started the game. De Bruyne whips in an enticing ball from the left but no City player is able to get on the end of it.
39' Madrid look to have the wind in their sails after that opening goal and City would do well to make it through to half-time with the score as it is.
E. Camavinga
Assist
36' Camavinga made a great burst up the pitch but it was all about Vinicius with a superb strike into the top corner.
Vinícius Júnior
Goal
36' GOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!! MADRID LEAD!! 1-0!! What a strike and what a goal from Vinicius to open the scoring. Modric and Camavinga combine in their own half before the Frenchman drives up the pitch with the ball. He lays it off to the Brazilian who unleashes a thunderous strike from the edge of the box into the top-right corner. No chance for Ederson and Madrid lead out of nowhere!
35' A great burst from Valverde down the right creates another good chance from Madrid. The ball is fizzed in towards Benzema but the talismanic striker can't quite get control of the ball with City defenders swarming around him and he is eventually penalised for handball.
34' Madrid win their first corner of the game but Walker rises well to head Kroos' cross clear with Rudiger looking to pounce.
32' Play resumes and immediately Madrid threaten down the right with Rodrygo but his cross is too high for Vinicius and it sails over with City able to clear.
31' Gundogan is still undergoing checks by the physios but he is now up and back on the pitch.
28' Madrid look to break but play is called back as Gundogan stays down following a collision with Rudiger.
25' GREAT DEFENDING!! City can have all the possession in the world but Madrid are always so dangerous when they win it back high up the pitch. Vinicius poaches it this time and his low cross into the box is destined for Benzema with the goal gaping but for a superb sliding intervention from Dias.
23' City are passing the ball around Madrid at will right now. The home fans with plenty of whistles and they don't seem best pleased with how their side are playing at the moment.
21' De Bruyne opts to send this delivery into the heart of the box this time but it is Modric who meets it and heads it away for the home side.
21' City are getting plenty of space down both flanks and this time it is a cross from Walker which is turned behind for a corner by Camavinga.
19' Camavinga brings down Stones on the edge of the box after a marauding run from the Englishman. The referee waves play on, though, and Gundogan's eventual shot doesn't trouble the Madrid goal from the edge of the box.
18' Madrid attack for the first time in this contest but Ederson is quick off his line and dives on the ball eagerly with Benzema looking to pounce.
16' Grealish gets the better of Carvajal down the left and his clipped cross towards the back post is met by Haaland. The striker has to generate all the power on the header but it's easy enough for Courtois who makes another early save.
14' De Bruyne plays the free-kick across and to the edge of the box and finds Silva. The Portuguese midfielder clips a ball back into the box but it evades Dias and Haaland at the back post as it drifts out for a goal kick.
13' Madrid give Rodri plenty of space from distance and the Spaniard lets fly from range. Courtois is down quickly to his right as he tips it around the post for a corner.
11' 66% possession for City in this opening 11 minutes but one suspects Madrid will be happy to sit back and use their pace on the break to get at this City team when they can.
8' SAVE!! City go direct this time and good hold-up play from Haaland allows Silva to pick up the ball on the right. He feeds it back to De Bruyne on the edge of the area but Courtois is equal to his right-footed effort and he makes a good early save.
7' It's been a very positive start from City as they look to move the ball with pace and purpose. Haaland gets inside the box but the retreating Kroos is able to get the vital interception before the striker can pull the trigger.
5' And now City have the first corner of the evening which De Bruyne stands over. The Belgian delivers but Dias can't get enough on the header. City recycle the play before Gundogan's long-range effort is blocked by Carvajal.
3' Gundogan delivers the ball into the Madrid box after City win an early-free kick but Madrid can clear it away as Stones attempts to head it back towards the penalty spot.
3' Both sides settling into this encounter but there's some early concern for Grealish as it looks like he came off worse from a first-minute challenge against Rodrygo.
1' With the famous Champions League anthem wrapped up, we are underway here in the first leg!
Real Madrid and Manchester City will meet for the ninth time in European competition in this match, with both sides winning three of the previous eight (D2). The Citizens have won three of the last four meetings (L1) but did lose the most recent – 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu in last season’s semi-final second leg.
Guardiola, meanwhile, makes six changes from City's 2-1 win against Leeds United in the Premier League. Ake and Laporte are replaced with Dias and Walker in defence while Rodri and Stones come in for Lewis and Alvarez at the base of midfield. There are also changes on both flanks, with Silva and Grealish replacing Mahrez and Foden.
Ancelotti makes two changes from Madrid's 2-1 win against Osasuna in the Copa del Rey final. Eder Militao is suspended meaning Rudiger comes into the starting line-up and Modric is fit again with Tchouameni dropping to the bench.
MANCHESTER CITY SUBS: Scott Carson, Cole Palmer, Sergio Gomez, Julian Alvarez, Stefan Ortega, Rico Lewis, Riyad Mahrez, Aymeric Laporte, Kalvin Phillips, Phil Foden.
MANCHESTER CITY (3-2-4-1): Ederson; Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, Manuel Akanji; John Stones, Rodri; Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Jack Grealish; Erling Haaland.
REAL MADRID SUBS: Luis Lopez, Nacho, Lucas Vazquez, Marco Asensio, Mariano, Jesus Vallejo, Dani Ceballos, Alvaro Odriozola, Aurelien Tchouameni, Andriy Lunin, Eden Hazard.

For City, this year offers up another opportunity for Pep Guardiola to re-write the wrongs and capture the one trophy that has eluded him thus far in his tenure as manager. City come into this contest in imperious form - unbeaten in 20 games in all competitions - and back at the top of the Premier League. Having breezed past Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals, Guardiola will look to continue his good record against Madrid with the Spanish coach having lost just five of his 21 matches against Real Madrid across all competitions (W12 D4).
There may not be plenty to contend for domestically for Real Madrid but the defending champions of Europe's most coveted prize are just two games away from yet another Champions League final. Carlo Ancelotti's side picked up yet more silverware on the weekend with a 2-1 victory in the Copa del Rey final against Osasuna and reached this point in the Champions League having brushed aside Chelsea 4-0 on aggregate. Now, the Spanish side will be hoping for a repeat of last year's semi-finals which saw them knock out Manchester City en route to a record 14th Champions League.
Hello and welcome to this live commentary for the Champions League semi-final first-leg fixture between Real Madrid and Manchester City from The Santiago Bernabeu.
