Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana became the first player to score a hat-trick of penalties in a Premier Soccer League match on Sunday.
The Kaizer Chiefs centre forward hit the back of the net three times against Stellenbosch FC as he inspired the Soweto giants to a 3-1 win in Cape Town.
GOAL takes a look at where Chiefs and Pirates rank on the list of teams with the most hat-tricks in the PSL era which started in 1996.
The two Soweto giants are both on seven hat-tricks each with Edward Manqele being the last player to score three times in a single match for Swallows in a 3-2 win over Mpumalanga Black Aces in August 2013.
No Pirates player has grabbed a hat-trick since Frank Mhango propelled the Buccaneers to a 4-1 win over Polokwane City in January 2020 with Ben Motshwari netting the other goal.
Ezenkosi are fourth on the list with eight hat-tricks with some of the greatest strikers in the PSL having donned the club's colours including Anthony Laffor, Christopher Katongo and Katlego Mphela.
Katongo scored a hat-trick against AmaZulu to help Cosmos claim a 4-2 win in January 2007 and the 2012 Afcon title-winning captain went on to win the PSL's Golden Boot award in the same season.
Third on the list is the Tshwane giants with 10 hat-tricks with the likes of Jeremy Brockie and Laffor among the players who have grabbed a treble in a single game for the three-time PSL champions.
Brockie went on to achieve legendary status at SuperSport and the New Zealander left Matsatsantsa for Mamelodi Sundowns in 2018 as the club's all-time top scorer with 54 goals, but Bradley Grobler has since broken the record.
Masandawana boast 15 hat-tricks and four of them were scored by players who are part of their current squad with Lebohang Maboe having netted a treble in a 3-0 win over Black Leopards in September 2020.
Themba Zwane then scored three times in a 4-3 victory over AmaZulu FC in November 2020 before Peter Shalulile grabbed two hat-tricks in matches against Swallows FC and Golden Arrows last season.
The Glamour Boys have been elevated to the top of the list by Bimenyimana as the Naturena-based giants are currently on 16 hat-tricks. The 24-year-old joined a long list of players who have grabbed a treble in Amakhosi colours.
Samir Nurkovic, Collins Mbesuma, Lebogang Manyama and Bernard Parker are some of the players who have grabbed hat-tricks for the most supported football club in SA over the years.
Before last season, Chiefs were the team with the most hat-tricks (15) with Sundowns on 13, but Shalulile netted two trebles as Masandawana drew level with Amakhosi.
The Soweto giants have now become the outright leaders once again thanks to Bimenyimana's exploits, but it might be a matter of time before two-time PSL Golden Boot winner Shalulile scores Masandawana's 16th hat-trick.
