Manchester City do not always make things easy for themselves in crunch Champions League games, but they made it look easy against seasoned experts Bayern Munich and head into the second leg of their quarter-final with a dream 3-0 scoreline.

City's defence made life miserable for Bayern's attack before Rodri unlocked a tight game with a superb strike from outside the box.

Bayern improved after the break and it was a nervy opening 15 minutes to the second half for City fans, who have seen their side let many a lead slip at the Etihad Stadium on Europe's biggest stage.

But Erling Haaland set up a simple header for Bernardo Silva to double City's advantage before the Norwegian volleyed in a third goal to break yet another record, becoming the first player to play in the Premier League to score 45 goals in a season in all competitions - and he still has two months left to further inflate his enormous goal tally!

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Ederson (8/10):

Stood his ground in a difficult spell for City early in the second half, making a series of impressive stops from old team-mate Leroy Sane.

    John Stones (8/10):

Spectacular again in his new role as a utility holding midfielder, expertly stepping back into defence when needed.

    Manuel Akanji (8/10):

Made a number of meaty challenges and showed real hunger to always get to the ball first.

    Ruben Dias (9/10):

Made a crucial block on a Jamal Musiala shot and led by example from the back.

    Nathan Ake (7/10):

Very strong in his attacking and defensive duties.

    Midfield

    Bernardo Silva (7/10):

Smart movement throughout as City played their way through Bayern and was in the right place at the right time to meet Haaland's cross for the all-important second goal.

    Rodri (7/10):

Barely put a foot wrong in midfield and then broke the deadlock in a cagey game with a wonderful finish, his first goal in the Champions League.

    Ilkay Gundogan (6/10):

Linked up well in attack but should have opened the scoring, hitting a loose ball at the leg of Sommer when the goalkeeper was on the floor.

    Attack

    Kevin De Bruyne (6/10):

Was good in the first half and was responsible for some good openings but faded in the second before being replaced with what looked like an injury.

    Erling Haaland (8/10):

Compensated for a quiet first half with a dream cross for Bernardo and an emphatic volley to score his 45th goal of the season in all competitions, a record for a Premier League player.

    Jack Grealish (8/10):

Worked tirelessly and intelligently. Helped set up Silva's goal with a combination of effort and pizzazz, chasing down Upamecano and then releasing Haaland with a backheel.

    Subs & Manager

    Julian Alvarez (6/10):

Lively in his time on the pitch but should have buried his chance to put the tie out of sight. Unlucky with his second attempt, which fizzed just past the far post.

    Pep Guardiola (9/10):

Got his selection spot-on with Stones in holding midfield and picking Bernardo over Riyad Mahrez. Has now won his last three matches against Tuchel, avenging his three-game losing streak to the German in 2021.
