Mamelodi Sundowns Player Ratings: Lakay superb as Lebusa struggles against Petro de Luanda

4:54 AM SGT 17/4/22
Lyle Lakay, Mamelodi Sundowns. March 2022
Masandawana succumbed to a 2-1 loss to the Angolan giants in the quart-final first-leg match on Saturday evening

GOAL runs the rule over the individual performances of Masandawana players.

  • Denis Onyango, Mamelodi Sundowns, October 2021

    Denis Onyango - 6/10

Made some key saves on the night including one in stoppage time as he denied Maya.

However, Onyango should have done better when Petro took the lead as he failed to handle Tiago Azulao's cheeky backheel attempt which lacked power.

Instead, he parried the ball and Yano was there to score what proved to be the winning goal.

  • Khuliso Mudau, Mamelodi Sundowns, February 2022

    Khuliso Mudau - 5.5/10

Started the game well and made some overlapping runs to offer support to Thapelo Morena on the right wing.

However, Mudau seemed to lose focus in some key moments, allowing the Petro to mount pressure on Downs. The cross which led to the hosts' second goal came from Mudau's flank.

  • Lyle Lakay, Mamelodi Sundowns, February 2022

    Lyle Lakay - 8/10

Undoubtedly Sundowns' best player against Tricolours.

Lakay was played brilliantly both defensively and offensively while being a threat from dead-balls which saw him open the scoring with a wonderful free-kick.

  • Mosa Lebusa, Mamelodi Sundowns, September 2021

    Mose Lebusa - 4.5/10

Struggled against the tricky and pacey Azuola.

Lebusa was a bit lethargic in closing down the Brazilian, who was allowed score while unmarked. The Downs star also allowed opponents to run at him and pass him far too easily at times.

  • Brian Mandela, Mamelodi Sundowns, February 2022

    Brian Mandela - 6/10

Had a composed start to the game.

Mandela looked settled at the back at first, but was soon put under immense pressure by Petro and he looked shaky. However, Mandela did win his aerial battles against Yano.

  • Andile Jali, Mamelodi Sundowns, September 2021

    Andile Jali - 6/10

Operated in a deeper position in midfield.

Jali coped with the pressure well and put in a composed performance just in front of the Downs defence forcing Petro to attack down the wings.

  • Teboho Mokoena, Mamelodi Sundowns, February 2022

    Teboho Mokoena - 5.5/10

Played enthusiastically on his return to the starting line-up.

However, Mokoena's eagerness got the better of him and he didn't offer much when he pushed forward from midfield.

  • Themba Zwane, Mamelodi Sundowns, October 2021

    Themba Zwane - 6/10

Made a lively start playing behind Peter Shalulile as he dribbled past players with creativity and pace.

Zwane should have scored after combining brilliantly with Shalulile, but he hit the upright. His influence waned after the restart and he was substituted.

  • Gaston Sirino, Mamelodi Sundowns, March 2022

    Gaston Sirino - 5/10

Had a relatively quiet outing on the left side of Downs' attack.

To Carneiro contained Sirino, who was never a threat to the hosts' defence and he was a substitute just after the hour-mark.

  • Thapelo Morena, Mamelodi Sundowns, March 2022

    Thapelo Morena - 5/10

Made some good runs into dangerous positions.

However, Morena failed to threaten the goal with a shot or play an effective pass until he was substituted in the second-half.

  • Peter Shalulile, Mamelodi Sundowns, December 2021

    Peter Shalulile - 5.5/10

Came into this match in great form.

Shalulile deserves credit for getting himself in goalscoring positions, but his finishing touch was missing as he failed to hit the target from close range three times.

  • Neo Maema, Mamelodi Sundowns, November 2021

    Neo Maema - 6/10

Added fluency to Downs' attack and he hit the back of the net with a fierce shot, but the goal was disallowed for a foul having been introduced in the 65th minute.

  • Lebohang Maboe, Mamelodi Sundowns, April 2022

    Lebohang Maboe - 5.5/10

Came on at the same time as Maema and put in a decent shift - carrying balls from midfield into attack as Downs looked to grab a late equalising goal.

  • Pavol Safranko, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2021

    Pavol Safronko - 5/10

Introduced in the 78th minute when Downs were playing long balls into the Petro box, but chances didn't fall for him in the box.

  • Mothobi Mvala, Mamelpdi Sundowns, April 2022

    Mothobi Mvala - N/A

Brought in with seven minutes left and he had little time to make an impact.

  • Kermit Erasmus, Mamelodi Sundowns, April 2022

    Kermit Erasmus - N/A

Also came on in the 83rd minute.
