Thank you and gooe bye

And with that, another day of jam-packed football action has come to a close.

The Africa Cup of Nations delivered two tough ties to open proceedings, Inter beat off Lazio to keep hold of the Serie A summit, and frustrations abounded for Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain as they were held to draws.

But spare a thought for Arsenal, who remain likely the most miserable side of the lot after Nottingham Forest stunned them for another great FA Cup upset.

Until the next time, thank you for joining us - and good bye!

Spoils shared in four-goal thriller

The final whistle comes - and Atletico Madrid hold on for a point despite losing a man late on.

The Rojiblancos move ahead of Real Sociedad and slip into the top four, missing the chance to open up some real daylight.

But they get a point out of it at least, with Villarreal more than worthy opponents who deserve their share of the spoils too.

RED CARD: Villarreal 2-2 Atletico

(Geoffrey Kondogbia)

Late drama in La Liga - it's hero to zero for Geoffrey Kondogbia!

The Atletico Madrid man is off - but does it come too little too late for Villarreal?

FT: Inter 2-1 Lazio

Champions retake lead at Serie A summit

The final whistle goes at San Siro too - and Inter hold on for the three points in Serie A!

The hosts beat off Lazio to reclaim the summit in the race for the Scudetto once more, but were made to sweat for it throughout by their visitors.

Ciro Immobile in particular kept up his fine form, but it proved to be not enough in the end for his side.

FT: Lyon 1-1 PSG

Kehrer rescues late point for visitors

There goes the final whistle in Ligue 1 - and Thilo Kehrer's rescue package is enough to stave off defeat for Paris Saint-Germain against Lyon.

The hosts will feel that they probably should have seen this one out for three points, but in the end, Mauricio Pochettino's men - missing a few key faces but still stacked with talent - forced a share of the spoils.

GOAL: Villarreal 2-2 Atletico

(Geoffrey Kondogbia)

From the edge of the box!

Atletico Madrid have needed some divine intervention and Geoffrey Kondogbia has delivered it, following up Angel Correa's attempt with an equaliser for Diego Simeone and company.

That puts this game back on level pegging as it heads into the final act.

GOAL: Lyon 1-1 PSG

(Thilo Kehrer)

PSG throw themselves a lifeline!

Thilo Kehrer is the man who snatches an equaliser on the road for Mauricio Pochettino's side, to get them back in with a shout of a points result in Ligue 1.

Lyon are absolutely fuming with themselves at that concession.

GOAL: Villarreal 2-1 Atletico

(Alberto Moreno)

Disaster for Atletico Madrid - they've gone behind in La Liga!

The domestic champions trail the Europa League holders as Alberto Moreno puts Villarreal on top.

The defender does the damage and the Yellow Submarine are sailing high.

GOAL: Inter 2-1 Lazio

(Milan Skriniar)

Inter reclaim the lead in Serie A - and it's Milan Skriniar who does the damage!

He rises up, plants a lovely header into the back of the net and wheels away to celebrate.

The hosts needed that intervention at San Siro. It puts them back at the summit as things stand.

Immobile fires Lazio up

Inter 1-1 Lazio

FT: Ethiopia 0-1 Cape Verde

As Inter and PSG get back underway for the second whistle, the final whistle has just gone at the Africa Cup of Nations - and it is Cape Verde who win their first clash of the tournament.

They beat ten-men Ethiopia in order to join Cameroon at the summit of Group A.

That concludes the first day of action too, with more to come over the next few weeks.

HT: Villarreal 1-1 Atletico

There's the whistle in Spain - and Atletico Madrid have been frustrated in their attempts to pull free in this clash in La Liga.

Angel Correa's sensational strike has been matched by Pau Torres and the Yellow Submarine are well and truly in this one.

There's still a long way to go though.

Yellow Submarine hope to avoid sinking

Villarreal 1-1 Atletico

HT: Inter 1-1 Lazio

HT: LYon 1-0 PSG

There go the whistles for the break in Serie A and Ligue 1 - and it is mixed fortunes for the favourites on both sides.

Inter's early lead has been wiped out by Lazip, while PSG find themselves behind against Lyon.

There's work to be done by both to get on top in their contests now.

GOAL: Villarreal 1-1 Atletico

(Pau Torres)

The Yellow Submarine strike back!

Villarreal surface with a goal and it is Pau Torres who does the damage for the hosts.

We're back to level pegging in this one!

GOAL: Inter 1-1 Lazio

(Ciro Immobile)

Just the response that the visitors needed!

Lazio pull level in almost the blink of an eye, to keep this game at close quarters.

Ciro Immobile is the man who delivers the finish to peg Inter back.

GOAL: Inter 1-0 Lazio

(Alessandro Bastoni)

It's long-range or nothing tonight in Europe!

Inter seize the lead in Serie A and it is Alessandro Bastoni who nets, firing in a low effort from outside the box after Lazio had cleared a corner short.

He picks his spot perfectly and the goal is his reward.

GOAL: Villarreal 0-1 Atletico

(Angel Correa)

Atletico Madrid seize the lead against Villarreal with that most audacious of finishes - from the halfway line.

Their man spots the goalkeeper off his line and loops a long-range effort from just inside the centre-circle, beating him from distance. That is a special finish.

Second half underway in AFCON clash

Ethiopia 0-1 Cape Verde

The second half is just underway at Stade Omnisport Paul Biya, where Ethiopia have it all to do in their first AFCON clash.

They trail Cape Verde by one goal and are a man down too after a first-half red card.

This is an early test of their mettle.

KO: Villarreal v Atletico

On the other side of the continent, the last blockbuster club clash of the day is getting underway.

It's the champions of Spain, against the minor champions of Europe, as Atletico Madrid get stuck in against Villarreal.

This could be a tasty one.

GOAL: Lyon 1-0 PSG

(Lucas Paqueta)

The worst possible start for PSG rears its head!

Lucas Paqueta latches onto a long, towering ball, and reads the offside trap perfectly. It brings him one-on-one into the box and he slashes a low finish across goal to nestle in the left post.

Just the trick for Lyon early on.

KO: Inter v Lazio

KO: Lyon v PSG

The whistle goes in Serie A and Ligue 1 - and the two pacesetters near the summit of Italian and French football are underway!

Inter need to avoid defeat to draw back level with Milan at the summit, but they will have a game in hand of course, after that Bologna no-show.

PSG meanwhile just need to keep ticking over. They can afford defeat, but Mauricio Pochettino would surely it rather be a routine result.

Forest fire

โ€˜We were not good enoughโ€™

Arsenal have been dumped out of the FA Cup at the third round stage, with Mikel Arteta looking to make no excuses despite being without a number of first-team stars.

He told ITV Sport after suffering a 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest: "They won, they scored a goal and we didnโ€™t. We were not good enough and we have to apologise for it.

"I donโ€™t want to use excuses, I expect the team I put out to do better and when you donโ€™t in the cup you are out.

"Today showed we were not capable of winning against Forest away from home and didnโ€™t put in the level to win the game. Itโ€™s a collective issue and today we have not done it."

FT: Roma 3-4 Juventus

A remarkable contest in the Italian capital comes to a close. The hosts led 3-1 at one stage but collapsed in the second half to end up losing. Juve were also reduced to 10 men and Mourinho will be asking more uncomfortable questions of his inconsistent side.

FT: Nottm Forest 1-0 Arsenal

The Gunners are dumped out of the FA Cup at the third round stage. Forest have history when it comes to sending the north London giants packing, and have done so once again. They were the better team for long periods at the City Ground and can now ready themselves for a meeting with local rivals, and current holders of a prestigious prize, Leicester in round four.

Big chance

Nketiah has been in decent goalscoring form for Arsenal in cup competition this season, but fluffs his lines here when presented with a clear sight of the target. He had a free header from five yards out, but got his connection with the ball all wrong and glances across the face instead of towards Samba in the Forest net.

โ€˜We struggled a lotโ€™

Tottenham left it late to see off Morecambe, having fallen behind to League One opposition. They eventually prevailed 3-1, with Antonio Conte pleased to be into the next round.

He told BBC Sport: โ€œOur target was to go to the next round and we won the game. For sure we struggled a lot in the first part of the game and conceded a goal from the set piece.

โ€œWe deserve to win because in these type of games you have to show your strength. They defended with 11 players and thatโ€™s normal in these games but it is important to find the right solution.โ€

Plenty of positives

Liverpool fell behind in their FA Cup third round clash with Shrewsbury, but rallied to claim a 4-1 win. Their starting XI included plenty of youngsters, with Jurgen Klopp looking to take positives from a professional performance.

He told BBC Sport: "We've trained since Friday pretty much and that is what we decided with this line up. The boys really fought hard.

"When you get the first goal against you so many things can happen but I liked the way we responded.

"We started with five really young boys. They are really good players. We played so many safety passes in the first half. We knew we could play better football in the second half.โ€

He added on seeing Kaide Gordon become the second-youngest goalscorer in the clubโ€™s history: "He's a real talent and his main strength is his finishing."
