Newcastle are next in action in the Premier League at home to Fulham on Sunday. Leicester take on Nottingham Forest on the road on Saturday.

Newcastle United secure their place in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup for the first time since 1976 courtesy of a 2-0 win over Leicester City at St James' Park. The Magpies dominated the contest, but spurned a host of chances in front of goal. Eventually the home side got the breakthrough from Dan Burn on the hour mark before Joelinton ensured that his team were heading into the last four with a cool finish.

58' CLOSE! The boot of Castagne almost gives Newcastle the lead as he deflects Burn's cross dangerously towards his own goal, but it loops just over the top.

56' It has been a carbon-copy of the first half. Newcastle should be out of sight, but they have not taken their chances.

54' SAVE! Longstaff lines up a drive from the edge of the box and powers a right-footed effort towards the net that Ward pushes wide of the target.

53' CHANCE! Burn has to score! The defender has a free header from Trippier's pinpoint cross, but he directs his effort inches over the bar.

52' Guimaraes is the latest Newcastle player to go down after colliding with Perez. Newcastle get the free-kick, but Perez escapes a booking.

51' Albrighton whips a cross into the box from the right flank, but he gets his angles slightly wrong as the ball drops onto the roof of the net.

50' BLOCK! Trippier loses out to Barnes and the winger turns inside to shoot. His effort is charged down before Tielemans sees his strike diverted over by Schar.

48' Trippier is going to continue, but he appears to be stretching out a muscle.

46' OFF THE POST! Joelinton finds space down the left flank and takes aim with a right-footed strike. Albrighton gets a deflection on the ball and it takes it onto the left post and wide. So close for the hosts!

Eddie Howe's side were excellent in the opening 20 minutes and should have at least taken the lead. Their inability to take their chances appeared to weigh on their minds as they allowed Leicester back into the game. If the Magpies can regain their tempo and more importantly find their clinical edge in front of goal a place in the semi-finals awaits.

It's goalless at the break in the EFL Cup quarter-final clash between Newcastle United and Leicester City. The hosts will feel that they should be comfortably ahead as they spurned several great chances in the first half. Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes and Callum Wilson all missed good opportunities. The Foxes grew into the game and had a couple of moments on the counter, but Brendan Rodgers will be relieved to get into the interval all square.

43' SAVE! Almiron raids down the right flank and skips past a challenge from Thomas with ease. He opens up his body to shoot on his left foot, but Ward makes a comfortable save.

41' Almiron goes down clutching his shin in the aftermath. That will be a concern for Howe.

40' Almiron latches on to a clever flick from Guimaraes down the right flank, but he cannot stretch to knock it into the middle.

34' Tielemans is afforded space on the left flank and he curls a cross to the back post that skims off Burn and evades Albrighton.

33' Barnes runs behind Trippier, but takes a terrible first touch to allow Pope to intervene. Leicester keep the attack alive as Tielemans shoots from distance, only to see his effort deflected over the top.

32' Trippier angles a brilliant ball over the top for Wilson to chase, but it skips off the surface and evades the striker, who was slightly on his heels.

29' Castagne charges through the Newcastle defence down the right flank. He finds Daka with a pass that plays him through on goal, but the forward goes for a low offload to Barnes at the back post that is cut out by Trippier. Daka may look back and feel he should have had a shot there.

28' Guimaraes offloads to Trippier, who flights a cross for Burn to attack. He directs a header towards goal that Ward comes through to collect.

28' Faes wins the ball in a challenge with Wilson, but catches him with a boot in the process. Newcastle have another free-kick in a good position.

26' The Foxes will feel that they have weathered a storm after the initial onslaught from the home side. Howe's side should at least be a goal to the good.

24' Leicester have a rare foray forward, but Albrighton fails to release Tielemans into space in the inside-right channel with the Magpies seemingly exposed at the back.

22' LONGSTAFF AGAIN! The midfielder could have had a hat-trick! He gets into a good position, but he fails to connect with Trippier's cross in the six-yard box. Guimaraes does get a head on the ball, but it deflects off Amartey onto Longstaff and into the hands of Ward.

20' Schar rises to connect with the resulting corner from Trippier, only to guide his header wide of the target.

19' WHAT A SAVE! Trippier's free-kick causes havoc in the box that Longstaff collects. He shoots first-time, but sees his effort turned past the left post by Ward with a brilliant reaction stop.

18' Castagne catches Joelinton with a late challenge and gives away a free-kick in a useful position for the hosts.

15' WIDE! Guimaraes connects with another blast from the edge of the box, but once again he places his effort wide of the left post after good work from Joelinton down the left.

15' SAVE! Tielemans finds Perez in space in the final third and he turns to shoot with power from 20 yards out. Pope has to watch it all the way to make the claim.

14' Faes takes a risk as he attempts to intercept a pass from Schar. He misses the ball and Wilson collects, but he's not able to capitalise on the space in the final third.

12' Almiron twists and turns down the right flank before teeing up Trippier for a cross. However, the defender overhits his delivery into the middle to ease the pressure on the Foxes.

11' Leicester break on the counter and Tielemans tries to release Albrighton down the right flank, but his offload is deflected away from the winger by Burn.

9' Newcastle probe down the right flank as Almiron combines with Trippier, but his cross is deflected behind at the near post for another corner.

8' Joelinton connects with Trippier's corner and angles it back across goal, but Burn is edged out by Ndidi as the ball travels out for a goal-kick.

7' BLOCK! Almiron leaves Faes in his wake down the right flank and he supplies a cutback for Wilson. The forward shoots towards goal, but sees his effort deflected wide by Amartey.

6' Tielemans looks to release Daka in the final third, but the throughball evades the forward and travels into the hands of Pope.

5' Schar is back on his feet and the game resumes.

4' Schar goes down for the home side in a clash of heads with Daka. He remains down on the pitch.

3' CLOSE! Newcastle win the ball in the final third and Guimaraes latches on to Wilson's offload. He goes for the blast that sails inches wide of the left post.

1' CHANCE! Longstaff misses a sitter. Almiron drives forward from the Newcastle half and releases Willock in the inside-left channel. The midfielder cuts a cross to the back post for Longstaff, but he scuffs his effort wide of the target. A huge chance spurned.

Since winning the competition in 1999-00, Leicester have been eliminated in four of their last five League Cup quarter-final ties, with the last four going to penalties.

Leicester have made eight changes to their team from their win over Gillingham in the FA Cup. Ward returns to the side in goal, with Castagne, Faes, Amartey and Thomas recalled. Ndidi, Barnes and Daka are also restored to the line-up.

Newcastle have made eight changes to their side that was beaten by Sheffield Wednesday last time out. Joelinton, Longstaff and Botman retain their places, but Howe recalls his usual starters for the contest. Pope slots back into the side between the posts, while Trippier, Schar and Burn return to the backline. Guimaraes and Willock join Longstaff in the middle of the park. Wilson and Almiron start in the final third as Isak and Murphy drop to the bench.

Leicester have a strong history in the EFL Cup, winning the competition three times. They reached the semi-finals in 2020, where they lost out to Aston Villa in a close contest. Brendan Rodgers' men have a good record in cup competitions, including their 2021 FA Cup win, and will be eyeing another deep run. The Foxes have struggled of late, suffering three defeats in the Premier League since the World Cup break. They did defeat Gillingham last time out to give themselves respite, but they will need to raise their game against the Magpies.

Newcastle are bidding to reach the semi-finals of the EFL Cup for the first time since 1976. The Magpies defeated Bournemouth in the last round to advance to the last eight, but will have to raise their game against the Foxes. Eddie Howe's men beat Leicester 3-0 on Boxing Day in a dominant performance at the King Power Stadium in the Premier League. However, Newcastle's momentum has been checked by their defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the third round of the FA Cup. They cannot afford another poor outing this evening.
