That's all from Stamford Bridge today, so thank you for joining us and goodbye!
While Chelsea will begin a new chapter under incoming coach Mauricio Pochettino this summer, Newcastle's adventure is already stirring into life. Next term, the Toon will compete in the Champions League. First, though, both will take a breather following a long, hard Premier League season.
Summing up much of a sub-par season, Chelsea could not find the finishing touch to complete their approach work today, and they must settle for a final-day draw against a Newcastle side that had to hold firm for their point. Following a fast start, the Magpies were unable to maintain their early momentum, as the hosts had most of the ball and fired in 22 shots at goal. Both teams had chances to win it, but the 2022-23 campaign ends with a share of the spoils at Stamford Bridge.
90' + 4' FULL-TIME: CHELSEA 1-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED
90' + 3' MISS! Another great chance to take three points is spurned by the hosts! Hall's brilliant cross from the left picks out Joao Felix near the penalty spot, but the Atletico Madrid loanee steers his header over the bar with the goal at his mercy!
90' + 2' Never truly threatening Dubravka's goal, Joao Felix sends a 20-yard free-kick over the crossbar.
90' SAVE! Somehow, Chelsea fail to win it! Sterling takes the bull by the horns and runs straight at a back-tracking Newcastle defence through the centre. He then lays the ball perfectly into the path of Pulisic on the left side of the box, but with time to pick his spot the latter only fires straight at Dubravka from close range!
C. Pulišić
N. Madueke
88' Madueke's lively game comes to an early conclusion, as Pulisic makes perhaps his final appearance in a Chelsea shirt.
J. Lewis
A. Isak
88' After a fruitless shift up front, Isak is withdrawn; Lewis will replace him.
86' Yet another foray into the box by Madueke sees two Newcastle defenders left with their heads spinning, before his driven cross is cut out by Dubravka at the near post.
84' Following a Madueke throughball, Chukwuemeka's cutback from the right byline finds Joao Felix arriving into the box at pace, but under pressure, the Chelsea striker can only find the side-netting.
82' There's more frustration for Sterling, who is caught offside on the left flank. The England forward has been a constant thorn in Newcastle's side since the break, but the crucial finishing touch has eluded him so far.
80' OFF THE CROSSBAR! After Almiron's cute reverse pass splits the Chelsea defence, the ball breaks to young substitute Miley just outside the box. He strikes it firm and true, but it's marginally too high and flicks the top of the crossbar on its way behind! What a moment that would've been for the teenager!
78' NO PENALTY! The VAR agrees with the on-field officials: there's to be no spot-kick, so Chelsea will have to make do with a corner!
78' PENALTY FOR CHELSEA? After good work by Madueke sees Burn skinned on the right, Sterling fires in a low shot from the left side of the box. It clearly strikes Botman's arm on the way behind for a corner, but is that sufficient contact for a penalty instead? The VAR will decide!
L. Miley
E. Anderson
75' Seventeen-year-old Miley also makes his entrance, as Anderson is withdrawn.
D. Burn
M. Targett
75' Another double substitution for Newcastle. First, Burn replaces Targett at left-back.
74' A rare Newcastle counter-attack falters when both Wilson and Murphy make the wrong decision about where to release the ball, then Fernandez slams a 25-yard shot over the top by some distance down the other end.
71' After working a yard of space with a nutmeg on Guimaraes, from 20 yards out, Joao Felix fires wide of the target via a couple of deflections.
M. Kovačić
C. Gallagher
70' Chelsea now make a further change: Kovacic comes on for Gallagher in midfield.
C. Wilson
A. Saint-Maximin
69' Saint-Maximin also comes off, as Wilson joins Isak up front.
J. Murphy
A. Gordon
69' Howe makes his first changes today. First, Gordon is replaced by Murphy.
69' Ever more influential in this game, Sterling slips through a thicket of black-and-white shirts to reach Hall's cross from the left, but his shot flies clear of the crossbar.
67' Fofana stands strong near the byline, as Saint-Maximin's ball juggling almost opens up a slither of space in the Chelsea box. Newcastle have hardly threatened to score since half-time.
65' Another contribution from the impressive Madueke sees the winger fire a cross over to the left side of the box for Hall, arriving from left-back. However, the latter's shot lacks control and zips over the crossbar from a tight angle.
62' Newcastle are still camped on the edge of their own area, as a clearly frustrated Sterling lets fly from around 20 yards out. He had few other options, but his shot sails straight towards Dubravka, who fields it easily.
João Félix
K. Havertz
60' Havertz also makes way, with loanee Joao Felix replacing him up front.
C. Chukwuemeka
R. Loftus-Cheek
60' Chelsea now make their double change. First, Loftus-Cheek receives warm applause from the home fans as he possibly departs the Stamford Bridge pitch for the final time. Chukwuemeka replaces him in midfield.
58' Lampard is readying two more substitutes on the touchline, as he seeks to end his second stint as Chelsea boss with a win. His team have been on top since the break, but are still lacking a clear cutting edge.
56' After a coming-together with Gordon in midfield, Silva drops to the turf holding his face. The game is temporarily paused, but once it becomes clear the Newcastle man will not be punished, his opponent miraculously recovers.
54' Fernandez is dictating events in the centre of the park today, and he plays his part in releasing Madueke on the right. The young winger leaves Targett flat-footed with some sharp footwork but then slashes his shot well over from just inside the area.
52' Chelsea continue to boss the ball in these early stages of the second half, but their visitors look comfortable enough defending deep in numbers.
50' Schar's header from a dangerous Madueke cross towards Sterling fails to get the ball fully clear of danger, but Newcastle ultimately relieve the pressure when Anderson draws a foul from Azpilicueta.
48' Targett slings in an inswinging corner, forcing Arrizabalaga to make what turns out to be an effective - if unconvincing - punch clear for another Newcastle corner-kick. Trippier's delivery from the second set-piece is comfortably cleared away by Madueke.
W. Fofana
T. Chalobah
46' Chalobah has been withdrawn during the interval. Fellow centre-back Fofana will come on in his place.
46' Having made a half-time change in defence, Chelsea kick off, and we are back under way at Stamford Bridge!
As Manchester United are drawing with Fulham at half-time, recording a ninth away win of the season could help Newcastle grab third place. Chelsea have gone winless through their last seven home games in all competitions - their longest such run since 1988 - so the Magpies may still fancy their chances of victory today.
Showing some rare resilience, Chelsea have gritted their teeth and earned a way back into their final game of a grim season, after withstanding a fast start from Champions League-bound Newcastle United. The gulf in confidence between the sides was quite clear in the opening stages of a fast-paced first half, but after Gordon's opener, the Blues gained themselves a foothold and in addition to pulling level also made Dubravka work on a couple of occasions. It's finely poised at the break.
45' + 5' HALF-TIME: CHELSEA 1-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED
45' + 4' After some shoddy defending by Newcastle on the right, Schar slips through into the area. However, he fails to make the most of his chance and merely fires a low cross straight at Arrizabalaga.
45' + 3' Deep into four minutes of first-half stoppage time, Chelsea continue to push on in search of a second goal before the break. They've improved considerably as the game has worn on.
45' + 1' SUPER STOP! Dubravka keeps his side level! The Newcastle goalkeeper leaps high to his right in order to repel Sterling's close-range strike, following a superb whipped cross by Hall from the left. On the follow-up, the Slovak stopper makes another, more routine, save from Fernandez.
44' Once more, Almiron fails to fire in the final third, as his tame shot from the edge of Chelsea's box is plucked out of the air by a well-placed Arrizabalaga.
42' Releasing an ambitious early shot, Madueke again drifts in from the right and drives at the Newcastle defence, though his attempt barely troubles Dubravka in the centre of Newcastle's goal.
40' The game comes to a halt, as Guimaraes receives medical attention after dropping to the turf in midfield. He is ultimately able to make his own way to the touchline, though, so his return to action comes almost immediately.
38' MISS! Another gilt-edged opportunity is spurned by Almiron, after a cross from the left skims Gordon's head and drops into his path on the right-hand side of the area. He leans back and skews his shot over the top, despite having the luxury of time to control his finish!
36' Silva makes a crucial last-gasp block, as Saint-Maximin spins his marker inside the box and lets fly with a low shot towards the bottom-left corner. Perhaps Arrizabalaga had it covered in any case, but it was typically immaculate timing by the Brazilian.
34' Isak appears to sustain a knock after Azpilicueta leaves his leg dangling in a challenge on the touchline, which costs Chelsea a free-kick. However, Newcastle's record signing is soon able to resume his role up front.
32' MISS! Picked out on the edge of the box by a precise pass from Gordon, Almiron's wayward low shot zips past the left-hand post! Everything opened up nicely for the Paraguayan, but he just couldn't keep his cool at the crucial moment.
31' Not only has 42 per cent of the action been in Newcastle United's defensive third over the last 15 minutes, but Chelsea have had 74 per cent of possession during that time.
29' A surging run and cutback from the right byline by Madueke causes havoc in the Newcastle defence, and though the visitors survive, Chelsea win the ball back and Azpilicueta then has another dangerous delivery cut out.
K. Trippier
Own Goal
27' CHELSEA PULL LEVEL! It's been coming: 1-1 at Stamford Bridge! Fernandez cleverly slips a free-kick from midway through Newcastle's half into the path of Sterling on the left. The latter then weaves his way into the box before curling a low shot at goal, which Trippier clumsily bundles into the back of his own net from no more than two yards out!
24' An inswinging corner from Hall lacks both pace and direction so is cut out at the near post, but Chelsea regain possession and continue to apply pressure.
22' Saint-Maximin makes his way to the left byline before cutting the ball back for Isak to shoot from near the penalty spot, but Chalobah intervenes with a timely block and cuts out the Swedish striker's goalbound effort.
20' While Chelsea are now working their way back into the game in pursuit of an equaliser, Newcastle have avoided defeat in their last 16 Premier League matches when scoring the opening goal - dating back to August of last year, against Liverpool.
18' There's no doubt that Chelsea have now recovered from their early setback, and the home side are stroking the ball about with more purpose and clarity. Newcastle have had to drop back into a more defensive shape.
16' With Targett patched up and back into the fray, play resumes. Gordon has to head a dangerous cross behind for a Chelsea corner, and in the aftermath of the Blues' set-piece, Madueke sees a volley deflected over the crossbar.
15' The end-to-end action is paused momentarily, as Targett receives treatment for a bloodied nose inside Newcastle's area.
13' SAVE! Almost in slow motion, Dubravka drops down to his right in order to repel a heavily-deflected Silva header from close range! He scoops the ball off his goal-line, and Chelsea must make do with just a corner!
11' CLOSE! Just after Almiron tests Arrizabalaga with a shot from the left, Isak then flashes an effort narrowly wide of the right-hand post! The Magpies are in the ascendancy now, and Chelsea are reeling.
E. Anderson
Assist
9' Having received the ball from Saint-Maximin on the left side of the area, Anderson finds opening goalscorer Gordon with an accurate low pass.
A. Gordon
Goal
9' NEWCASTLE LEAD! Chelsea's blues continue! Saint-Maximin latches onto a long ball just outside the box, before laying it off to Anderson on the left. The latter coolly picks out Gordon's run into the area with a neat low pass, and the ex-Everton winger simply strokes the ball home from close range! It's 1-0 to the visitors!
8' Shutting out his England colleague with a lunging block just outside the six-yard box, Trippier stops Sterling delivering a potentially dangerous low cross into the Newcastle area.
6' Newcastle are enjoying a sustained period of possession following a rather frantic start to the game, and given the gulf in fortunes between these clubs of late, they should be expected to take the initiative.
4' The midfield battle could be a lively one, as Gallagher is already penalised for a rugged challenge on Guimaraes in the centre of the park. Soon after, Chalobah pokes the ball well wide following a corner.
2' SAVE! After Isak receives the ball from Saint-Maximin in the box and then turns inside to shoot towards the near post, Arrizabalaga drops down to make an smart save; conceding an early corner.
1' Newcastle kick off, and we are under way at Stamford Bridge!
Emerging into the London sunshine, both sets of players are out on the pitch, and kick-off is now just moments away!
Howe makes four changes, with Isak chosen ahead of Wilson for Newcastle's season finale. The latter drops to the bench, while Nick Pope misses out due to a finger injury; opening the door for Dubravka to start. Targett, Gordon, and Saint-Maximin are also promoted to the starting XI.
Chelsea make three changes to the team well beaten by Manchester United last time out, as Sterling, Silva and Loftus-Cheek all come into the hosts' starting XI. Despite benefiting from a substantial squad, Lampard's options were narrowed by a long injury list, featuring Benoit Badiashile, N'Golo Kante, Marc Cucurella, Ben Chilwell, Reece James and Mason Mount.
SUBS: Loris Karius, Mark Gillespie, Harrison Ashby, Dan Burn, Lewis Miley, Paul Dummett, Jacob Murphy, Jamal Lewis, Callum Wilson.
NEWCASTLE UNITED (4-3-3): Martin Dubravka; Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman, Fabian Schar, Matt Targett; Elliot Anderson, Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon; Miguel Almiron, Alexander Isak, Allan Saint-Maximin.
SUBS: Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly, Carney Chukwuemeka, Mateo Kovacic, Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic, Joao Felix, Wesley Fofana, Mykhailo Mudryk.
CHELSEA (4-3-3): Kepa Arrizabalaga; Cesar Azpilicueta, Trevoh Chalobah, Thiago Silva, Lewis Hall; Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Enzo Fernandez, Conor Gallagher; Noni Madueke, Kai Havertz, Raheem Sterling.
Newcastle have already secured a top-four spot ahead of the Premier League's final matchday, with Monday's goalless home draw against Leicester City enough to edge the Magpies over the line. Now just two points behind third-placed Manchester United, Eddie Howe's men could snatch third if the Red Devils slip up and they can improve on a dire record at today's venue. Though they beat Chelsea 1-0 at St James' Park back in December, Newcastle are seeking a first league double over the London club since 1987; having won on just one of their last 27 top-flight trips to Stamford Bridge.
Aiming to end a dismal Premier League campaign on a positive note, Chelsea kick off their final fixture of the season sitting 12th in the table - though they could still finish anywhere between 11th and 14th. Interim manager Frank Lampard has won just one and lost eight of his 10 matches since returning to the club, and his side suffered a 16th league defeat of the season on Thursday, when they were beaten 4-1 by Manchester United at Old Trafford. Form may not be on their side, then, but the Blues have not dropped points at home to Newcastle since May 2012.
Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Premier League clash between Chelsea and Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge!
