Thanks for joining our commentary. Until next time, goodbye.
Next up, Bolton travel to Plymouth Argyle in League One, with Villa hosting West Ham United in the Premier League.
Aston Villa have progressed to the third round of the EFL Cup, beating Bolton Wanderers 4-1 at the University of Bolton Stadium. The hosts had the lead for 12 minutes when Charles rolled in Lee’s pass, but Luiz found an equaliser directly from a corner. Kachunga had an early second-half chance for Bolton, but his blocked shot was as close as the hosts got to finding a second goal. A penalty from Ings quickly followed up by a strike from Digne gave Villa breathing room, with Bailey adding a late fourth to complete the route.

78' Villa fans have cheered each completed pass by their side in the last few minutes. They seem relatively confident that Bolton will not get back into this game.
76' Martinez gets involved for the first time this half, clearing away Lee's overhit pass.
75' Surprisingly, Villa are yet to introduce Archer. The striker scored four goals in his two EFL Cup appearances last term, averaging a goal every 45 minutes in the competition that campaign.

Philippe Coutinho

Yellow Card
62' Kachunga gets a yellow, looking to unnerve Ings who is taking the penalty.
J. Dixon
Yellow Card
61' Dixon gets a yellow card for his challenge on Ings, the penalty is to be taken soon.
60' PENALTY! Ings looks to go round Dixon and is cleared out by the goalkeeper. The striker was played in by Coutinho and looked fractionally offside.
58' McGinn looks for Watkins for the first time this half, but his pass is too heavy and goes to Dixon.
55' POST! Ings has his best chance of the game. The pass from Watkins was weighted perfectly, with the ball rolling to the former Southampton striker. Bearing down on goal, his low shot slams the post.
54' Kamara has conceded four fouls so far but is yet to receive a yellow card.
53' Another chance for Villa. Coutinho slipped the ball into Digne who curled the ball wide. Shooting with the right foot, the defender would have been happier if the ball landed on his left.
50' Crossed in by Digne, Watkins was beaten to the ball by Dixon. His punch landed at the feet of Luiz, who missed the ball completely - much to the frustration of Ings.
48' John goes close. His whipped free-kick had Martínez diving as the ball goes just wide of the post.
47' The first chance of the half comes Bolton's way. Kachunga latched onto the ball after Chambers misjudged it, but his shot was blocked by Mings.
46' The game restarts for the second half.
For Bolton, it should be more of the same. Clinical in attack, the home side should count themselves unlucky that they do not have their clean sheet intact. They have frustrated Villa, with McGinn's direct passes often landing into the gloves of Dixon. For the visitors, they should be more patient. Balls into Watkins have been forced, often resulting in a loss of possession. With Buendia, Ramsey, Bailey and Archer on the bench, they have enough quality to change the game when needed.
It's equal at the break, with Villa likely to be the happier of the two sides. The hosts took the lead through Charles after Lee dispossessed Luiz on the edge of the box and squared the ball to the striker who had a simple finish. Bolton's best player in the first half, goalkeeper Dixon was caught out by Luiz for the Villa equaliser. Direct from the corner, the midfielder's curling corner looped over the head of Dixon and into the net.
45' + 3' HALF-TIME: BOLTON WANDERERS 1-1 ASTON VILLA

44' This time, Dixon was ready for the corner from Luiz, punching the ball away from danger.
43' Luiz has his first corner since scoring.
42' Aston Villa have won three of their last four meetings with Bolton in all competitions, winning home and away against them the last time they met in the 2018-19 Championship campaign.
38' Bolton respond well. Afolayan's cross is met by Kachunga, but he could only direct his header into the palms of Martinez.
Douglas Luiz
Goal
36' GOAAALL! LUIZ SCORES! 1-1! Dixon has been brilliant so far but has been caught out by Luiz. His inswinging corner goes straight in.
33' Bradley's corner was met by the head of Kachunga, whose effort was blocked by Young. Ambitious handball shouts from the home crowd were waved away by the referee.
32' Villa have a clear plan. McGinn and Kamara keep looking to lob the ball over the top of the Bolton defence for Watkins to run onto. The striker is quicker than his markers, but Dixon's advanced position allows him to get to the ball first and clear it away.
29' The Brazilian hits the wall with his effort. It was poor, going into the midriff of those looking to block his shot.
28' Coutinho is fouled on the edge of the box. It's within shooting distance.
K. Lee
Assist
24' Luiz protests that he was fouled in the build-up by Lee, but the referee ignores his claims. Lee selflessly squares the ball to Charles, who could not have had a more simple finish.
D. Charles
Goal

16' After the corner from Digne was cleared, Young attempted to put the ball back into the box, but his pass was hit with too much power.
15' Watkins and Luiz link up on the right, with the Brazilian's cross cleared away for a corner.
G. Johnston
Yellow Card
13' A strong challenge from Johnston on Watkins gets him a yellow card. He will have to be careful now.
12' Coutinho looks for Watkins with a looping ball. However, there was too much power on the pass, with Dixon clearing the danger.
