Commentary

That's all for today. Goodbye.
Next up, Arsenal travel to Southampton in the Premier League, with PSV going to Groningen in the Eredivisie.
Xhaka’s second half goal was enough for Arsenal who secured their fourth consecutive Europa League win of the season to confirm their place in the knockout stage. The Arsenal opener was deserved after dominating the match, with the midfielder directing Tomiyasu’s cross into the bottom corner. Arteta’s side had eight shots on target in the second 45 minutes, but none in the first with Tierney, Xhaka and Jesus all missing the goal. However, they were much more accurate after the break. The latter of the trio and Saka were both denied three times by Benitez, who kept the Dutch outfit in the game. On the bench, Martinelli also tested the PSV goalkeeper after receiving the ball from Odegaard, but his powerful attempt was pushed wide. Gakpo struggled to get into the game for the visitors, failing to have a shot, with Simons’ strike from close range the only one to test Turner.
90' + 6' FULL-TIME: ARSENAL 1-0 PSV
90' + 5' Odegaard plays a short corner to Nelson. Arsenal are controlling the ball in the final moments under little pressure.
90' + 3' Turner has the ball in his gloves and is happy to take his time. He is complaining to the referee that De Jong is too close to him before clearing it up the pitch.
90' + 3' PSV are managed by former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy. The Dutchman scored two goals in 12 games against the Gunners for the Red Devils, his lowest goals/game rate (0.2) against a side he faced more than five times for the club. It looks like his side will fail to score today.

79' SAVE! Arsenal with patient play outside the box. Odegaard, Nketiah and Xhaka combine before Martinelli receives it on the left of the box. Looking across the goal, his blasted effort is pushed away by Benitez.
L. de Jong

T. Tomiyasu
Assist
70' Tomiyasu's run down the right is brilliant. He is fed by the substitute Odegaard before picking out Xhaka in the middle of the box.
G. Xhaka

63' Arsenal have attempted 15 shots in this match, higher than their season average of 14.3 in the Europa League.
61' SAVE! Arsenal have their best opportunity of the game through Jesus. On the outskirts of the box, he rolls a number of challenges before his low attempt is pushed wide. Nketiah is there on the rebound but fails to keep the attack alive.
60' Gakpo feeds the ball to Simons just outside the Arsenal box but he losses control of the ball.
59' Vieira looks to curl a free-kick from the left into the box but strikes it against Simons. The PSV man looks to burst away but Vieira tackles him and regains possession for Arsenal.
57' After Vieira missed a free-kick in the first half, it is Xhaka who takes responsibility. The captain smashes the wall with his first attempt before dragging the rebound wide.
É. Gutiérrez
Yellow Card
56' Gutierrez receives a yellow card after taking down Jesus on the edge of the box.
54' Saka has an opportunity now. One-on-one with Benitez, his effort is saved by the PSV goalkeeper. Jesus looks to score the rebound, but his shot is also saved.
54' Mwene bursts into the Arsenal third down the right. He then cuts it back to Simons who blasts over.
52' CHANCE! Jesus plays a one-two with Saka on the right of the PSV box. The Brazilian rolls the ball past Max and Ramalho before shooting straight at Benitez.
51' PSV have won just one of their last 11 away matches against English sides (D4 L6), beating Tottenham Hotspur in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup in 2007-08, with Jefferson Farfan scoring the game’s only goal. Their winless run will continue if they fail to attack in the second half.
49' Vieira looks for Tierney who runs into the middle of the box but his cross is intercepted.
47' There should be no surprise that the game is goalless. Arsenal and PSV have stopped the opposition from scoring a first half goal in 3 of their 4 games, only Real Sociedad (4) and Fenerbahce (4) have done this more often in the Europa League this season.
46' Arsenal get the second half underway.
Arsenal have had more shots than their opponent, as well as 66.6 per cent of the ball, but have failed to make their dominance count. Struggling to get inside the PSV box regularly, with the Dutch outfit defending well, they are snatching at chances. Defending in a solid block, they have sacrificed their attacking output. Gakpo has had just 13 touches and has been nullified by the Arsenal defence.
Arsenal have dominated the first half but are yet to test Benitez in the PSV net with the game goalless after the opening 45 minutes. Tierney had the home side’s earliest opportunity to break the deadlock, smashing the ball over the bar from inside the box after the ball was flicked towards him by Nketiah. Xhaka and Jesus dragged efforts wide from outside the box, with Gabriel shouldering Saka’s corner past the post. Vieira also had a chance to test the PSV goalkeeper but curled a low free-kick against the side of the net. For the away team, they have had just one shot. It came through Simons who ran down the middle of the pitch before blasting the ball over the bar.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: ARSENAL 0-0 PSV
G. Xhaka
Yellow Card

44' Saka dispossesses Max on the right before blasting a shot straight at Obispo.
42' Vieira curls the ball around the outside of the wall but hits the side netting with his effort.
40' Arsenal have a free-kick in a shooting position after Xhaka is brought down by Sangare just outside the box. It is positioned just to the left of the box with Vieira over it.
38' Arsenal have another corner after Ramalho slides Tierney's cross behind. Vieira aims for Gabriel but he cannot get a shot away.
36' Saka's inswinging corner looks for Gabriel. The ball hits his shoulder and bounces inches away from Jesus who was diving towards it.
34' Xhaka finds Saka down the right. The England international cuts in with his cross deflected out for a corner.
33' Xhaka and Jesus combine inside the PSV half again but the Brazilian fails to get the ball under control and the away side come away with possession.
32' Gabriel's pass inside is flicked towards Jesus by Xhaka but the striker cannot get his foot onto the ball and it rolls out for a goal-kick.
31' Vieira chips the ball towards Jesus who goes racing inside the box. Swinging his leg towards the ball it bounces straight to Benitez.
30' With space down the right, Tomiyasu's deep cross is taken off the foot of Nketiah by Xhaka who fails to direct his header towards the goal.
29' Chants of 'Saliba' echo around the stadium. The Arsenal defender is on the bench today.
28' Holding looks for Saka down the right. Marked by Max, the Arsenal man cuts inside before curling a cross straight into the gloves of Benitez.
27' Simons bursts down the middle of the pitch before shooting over. He was in plenty of space outside the Arsenal box with the defenders failing to close him down.
25' PSV are yet to have a shot. They beat Zurich 5-1 in their last Europa League away game – they haven’t won consecutively on the road in the competition since October 2013, while they last did so in the same season in 2011-12 (a run of four).
23' Arsenal have dominated the ball and the shots so far, but have failed to test PSV goalkeeper Benitez. None of their five shots have been on target.
22' Vieira aims for Tomiyasu with a corner but the ball is cleared away.
20' Xhaka plays a one-two with Nketiah on the outside of the box before passing the ball to Jesus. Unmarked, the striker shoots wide of the target.
18' Saka looks for Lokonga in the middle of the PSV half. The midfielder looks to send the ball forward but gets it all wrong. The away side have a goal-kick.
17' Max looks to drill the ball across the box but Holding is there to clear it away.
16' Gakpo goes forward with the ball for the first time. He cuts inside from the left before curling a cross towards Til that is intercepted.
14' Vieira has had just four touches so far. He has struggled to get into the game with Arsenal regularly playing the ball into the wings.
12' Xhaka has a shot after Jesus holds the ball up before laying it into his path. Running onto it, the captain curls his attempt wide.
11' OVER! The first chance for Arsenal. Saka's cross from the right is flicked towards Tierney by Nketiah with the Scottish international smashing the ball over.
9' Arsenal have won each of their first three group stage games in all five of their appearances in the Europa League. However, only in 2020-21 have they won each of their first four group stage games in the competition, winning all six in that campaign.
7' Nketiah attempts to dribble down the left but runs the ball out for a goal-kick under the pressure of three PSV defenders.
5' Tierney looks for Vieira with a low cross but the ball is smashed clear. Nketiah then drags a shot wide from outside the box.
4' It's been all Arsenal in the opening few minutes. However, they have failed to get inside PSV's box. Tierney is the latest to burst down the left, but he is tackled by Mwene.
2' Saka looks for Jesus just inside the PSV half, but Gutierrez sticks out a foot to win possession.
2' With Odegaard on the bench, Xhaka is Arsenal's captain today.
1' PSV get the game underway.
All six previous meetings between Arsenal and PSV came in the Champions League between 2002 and 2007; Arsenal are winless in their last three games against the Dutch side (D2 L1).
As for PSV, Van Nistelrooy names the same side that beat Utrecht 6-1 in the Eredivisie last time out. Facing English opposition, there are familiar names to Arsenal manager Arteta on the bench. Hoever and Branthwaite are on loan from Wolves and Everton respectively, with El Ghazi brought in from Aston Villa in the summer. Striker De Jong also had a loan spell at Newcastle in 2014.
Arsenal make six changes to the team that beat Leeds United at Elland Road. Turner retains his spot as Arsenal’s Europa League goalkeeper, with Ramsdale dropping to the bench. Tierney starts at left-back, with Tomiyasu moving over to the right. The Scottish international replaces White, with Holding swapping with Saliba at centre-back. There is also a switch in the midfield, with Lokonga coming in for Partey. In attack, Vieira and Nketiah are preferred to Odegaard and Martinelli who are substitutes.

Also unbeaten in the Europa League this campaign, PSV will move to the summit of Group A if they beat Arsenal. After a 1-1 draw with Bodo/Glimt in their first match, two emphatic wins over Zurich have seen them earn seven points, scoring 11 goals in the process. Second in the Eredivisie, manager Ruud van Nistelrooy will be looking at Cody Gakpo to make the difference, with the 23-year-old scoring 13 goals and assisting 11 in all competitions this season.
Arsenal are at the top of Group A and will qualify for the Europa League knockout round with a victory over PSV. Two wins over Bodo/Glimt and an away triumph against Zurich have seen Mikel Arteta’s side collect nine points from their opening three fixtures and are two points above today’s opponents. Victory will also see them move closer to finishing as group winners, which will see them avoid the play-off round in February.
