Nigerians to watch this weekend

GOAL preview the nation’s stars expected to feature for their respective clubs around the world this weekend.

Victor Osimhen could hit double figures for the first time this season when Napoli travel to Sampdoria in gameweek, while Cyriel Dessers and Cremonese seek to avoid a third defeat on the spin at Hellas Verona.

In England, Alex Iwobi ought to feature when Everton face off with Manchester United in the Third Round of the FA Cup.

In La Liga, one of the weekend’s clashes sees Villarreal play host to defending champions Real Madrid, looking to end the round in the league’s top six.

  • Joe Aribo Southampton 2022-23

    Joe Aribo

Having been in and out of the Southampton side since Nathan Jones took charge, Aribo will hope to start in the FA Cup when the Saints travel to Crystal Palace.

The attacking midfielder is one of the club’s older heads and it is surprising that Jones has not leaned as heavily on the former Rangers man since November.

It remains to be seen if Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise will feature for Patrick Vieira’s Eagles, who made it to last year’s semi-final.

  • Kelechi Iheanacho, Leicester City

    Kelechi Iheanacho

Iheanacho has had to make do with cameos for Leicester City but the forward should get significant match action this weekend.

The attacker’s accumulated game time in the last three Premier League games adds up to 56 minutes from an available 270 minutes, and he is Brendan Rodgers’ third-choice frontman behind Patson Daka and Jamie Vardy.

Leicester are at Gillingham on Saturday lunchtime hoping to return to winning ways after losing all three league games following the World Cup break.

Having been key to the Foxes reaching the 2021 final, ‘Seniorman’ will hope to have an impact at the start of their 2022-23 cup run.

  • Samuel Chukwueze of Nigeria and Villarreal.

    Samuel Chukwueze

The in-form Villarreal wide attacker was rested for the Yellow Submarine’s Copa del Rey visit to Cartagena but came on for the final 22 minutes, scoring his side’s fourth in a 5-1 win.

With Real Madrid to come this weekend, Quique Setien will hope his forward scores for the third gameweek running after netting in their preceding La Liga game against Valencia.

Chukwueze would add to his sole domestic goal if he scores versus Carlo Ancelotti’s heavyweights on Saturday.

  • Victor Osimhen Napoli 2022-23

    Victor Osimhen

Osimhen fired blanks on Serie A’s return when Napoli were beaten for the first time this season by Inter Milan at San Siro.

The striker remains the competition’s top scorer and he will make it 10 league goals with his next goal.

Luciano Spalletti’s men are at third-bottom Sampdoria looking to inflict the home side’s 12th defeat of the campaign.

Only Hellas Verona (30) have conceded more than Sampdoria (28), giving Osimhen and his colleagues the opportunity to bounce straight back after Wednesday’s loss at San Siro.

  • Cyriel Dessers Cremonese Serie A

    Cyriel Dessers

The Cremonese striker was inches away from stunning Juventus on Wednesday but had a powered shot come back off the post in the eventual 1-0 defeat.

This round of games sees the second-bottom side travel to cellar-dwelling Hellas Verona, with the visitors facing the possibility of ending the weekend bottom in Serie A if they are beaten.

Dessers has netted only twice for Cremonese, whose run of two goals in the last five games inspires little confidence in the Super Eagle scoring his third league goal of 2022-23.

  • Alex Iwobi of Everton and Nigeria.

    Alex Iwobi

Mounting pressure on Frank Lampard at Everton suggests Friday night’s FA Cup game at Manchester United could be make or break.

The Toffees boss is expected to select Iwobi at Old Trafford, where a victory will get the former Chelsea midfielder some reprieve.

Erik ten Hag’s crew are unbeaten in six in all competitions, winning all those fixtures with four clean sheets in succession, making them heavy favourites against the Merseyside club.
