The Glamour Boys have had a tough few years, some off-the-field issues only serving to emphasise the lack of trophy success

These days, Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs don't make as many good headlines as they would like to be.

  • Thabo Rakhale, Sekhukhune United & Njabulo Blom, Kaizer Chiefs, December 2021

    Latest incident

On Friday the SA soccer fraternity received the surprising news that Amakhosi are facing a possible points deduction from the Premier Soccer League after allegedly listing two ineligible players in their match against Sekhukhune United, a game they won 2-0 back in December. If true, it's a bad error for a top club like Chiefs to make.

    Uncertainty of top of uncertainty

The latest news comes at a time when uncertainty still remains over what will happen with the two games (Cape Town City, Golden Arrows) Chiefs missed due to a Covid-19 outbreak in their camp.

It also comes at a time in which the team is not doing badly, and are still strong candidates to at least finish second.

It's debatable whether the Soweto side should be punished for missing the Arrows and City games, but in any event, it's another off-field issue which is disrupting the club quite severely, more so now with the Sekhukhune situation as well.

  • Andrianarimanana Black Leopards Njabulo Blom kaizer Chiefs

    Transfer ban

In another administrative blunder a couple of years ago, the Soweto giants were hit with a two-window transfer ban by Fifa due to the illegal signing of Andriamirado “Dax” Andrianarimanana in 2018. That situation made it very difficult for previous coach Gavin Hunt to operate.

  • Steve Komphela of Kaizer Chiefs on the touchline

    Coaching instability

Often the sign of a successful club is a low turnover of coaches. In the past seven years Chiefs have had Stuart Baxter in charge twice, as well as Steve Komphela, Ernst Middendorp, Hunt and Giovanni Solinas. None have been overly popular with the fans, nor have they managed to add to the trophy cabinet.

  • Lazarous Kambole - Kaizer Chiefs April 2020

Hit and miss in the transfer market

Keagan Dolly has been one of Amakhosi's few good signings, but too many of the club's other recruits over the past half a decade have failed to fully deliver.

Chiefs' recruitment has not been the best and they have also struggled to compete with Mamelodi Sundowns.

    Silver lining?

The line between success and failure is a thin one, and it should be remembered that Chiefs played in last season's Caf Champions League final and are not a million miles away from being a good side.

Another plus for the club has been the healthy number of players who have come through the development ranks and into the first team. The emergence of Kaizer Motaung Junior as a leader within the organization could also be a step in the right direction, but may take time.

For now though, the gap between Mamelodi Sundowns and Amakhosi is a clear one.
