Star players like Philippe Coutinho and Antoine Griezmann failed to make any mark at Barcelona…

In the summer of 2017, FC Barcelona lost one of their star attackers as Neymar left the club to join Ligue 1 giants PSG for a world record transfer fee of €222 million.

Since the Brazilian left the club, Barcelona's performance graph slowly went downhill. They won five trophies in the last five seasons which includes (2 La Ligas, 2 Copa del Reys and 1 Supercopa de Espana). They reached the Champions League semifinal only twice and were ousted from the group stage of the competition in the ongoing campaign.

One of the major factors of the club's dip in standards was a series of failed signings which included the hiring of big money star players Ousmane Dembele, Philippe Coutinho and Antoine Griezmann amongst others.

Here, we take a look at the top 10 flop signings at Barcelona post the Neymar era.

  • Nelson Semedo Barcelona

The Portuguese full-back was roped in from Benfica for a transfer fee of €30 million in the 2017/18 season. Unfortunately, Semedo could not make much impact in the three seasons he remained at the club and was finally sold to Wolves in 2020.

  • Ousmane Dembele Barcelona

After Neymar left for PSG, Barcelona eyed upcoming French sensation Ousmane Dembele as his worthy heir and finally bought him from Dortmund for a whopping €105 million in the 2017/18 season. Unfortunately, Dembele has failed to live up to the expectations so far primarily due to a series of injury concerns. Dembele has appeared in only 87 La Liga matches for the club out of which he started in 58 games scoring 18 goals. Dembele is largely out of favour at the moment and the Catalan side wants to get rid of the player in the January window.

    Philippe Coutinho

Another big signing after Neymar's departure was Philippe Coutinho who joined Barcelona in January 2018 from Liverpool for a fee of €160 million. The Brazilian's performance was never really up to the mark at the club and he was even loaned out to Bayern Munich in the 2019/20 season. He returned last year and played in only 12 La Liga games, also due to injury and poor form. In January 2022, Coutinho once again moved out of the club to join Premier League side Aston Villa on loan.

  • Malcom Barcelona Tottenham ICC

The Brazilian attacker was close to joining AS Roma in the summer of 2018 but Barcelona pulled off a major transfer coup and signed Malcom at the last moment for €41 million from Bordeaux. Malcolm’s journey with Barcelona, though, lasted for only a year where he scored just one goal in 18 league appearances and was sold to Zenit St. Petersburg in 2019 for €40 million.

  • Gerard Piqué Coutinho Clement Lenglet Barcelona Bayern Munich Champions League

    Clement Lenglet

Barcelona roped in the French defender from Sevilla in 2018 for €35 million. The defender has not been up to the mark so far at Barcelona and has not been able to solve the club's defensive woes. In the ongoing season, Lenglet has appeared in only 12 La Liga games where he started in just four.

  • Arturo Vidal Barcelona unveiling

The Chilean joined Barcelona in 2018 for €18 million and remained at the club for only two seasons before being sold to Inter Milan in 2020. Vidal played 66 La Liga games in the two years he was with Barcelona and scored 11 goals. But there was largely a feeling that Vidal did not have the desied impact at Camp Nou.

  • Martin Braithwaite Barcelona vs Real Sociedad La Liga 2021-22

    Martin Braithwaite

The Danish forward joined Barcelona from Leganes in February 2020 after the Catalan side triggered his release clause of €18 million. Braithwaite has appeared in 43 La Liga games in the last two years and has scored only five goals.

  • Antoine Griezmann Barcelona

    Antoine Griezmann

Another high-profile signing was Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid in 2019 for €120 million. It was expected that a star like Griezmann, who has been one of the best players in the league for a long time, would fill in the void which Neymar left and form an attacking partnership with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. Unfortunately, in the 71 La Liga matches he appeared for Barcelona in the first two seasons, Griezmann managed to score just 24 goals. He never really settled and was loaned back to Atletico Madrid in August 2022.

    Francisco Trincao

The Portuguese attacker was signed by the Catalan club in January 2020 from Braga for a transfer fee of €31 million but he was loaned out to Wolverhampton after just one and a half seasons in the summer of 2021.

    Miralem Pjanic

In June 2020, Barcelona signed the midfielder from Juventus for €60 million and sent Arthur Melo the other way. Pjanic appeared in only 19 league games last season and ahead of the 2021/22 season, he was sent on loan to Besiktas.
