Although the Pharaohs managed to secure a place in the Round of 16 after the slim win, they still have not captured the imagination of the continent

GOAL analyses the performances of Egypt's players after their Group D Africa Cup of Nations game on Wednesday at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium.

  • Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.

    Mohamed El Shenawy - 8/10

The Al Ahly custodian was not that busy in the first 45 minutes, but as the second half began, he got busier as Sudan ventured forward more.

He did well to parry away a dangerous ball sent into the box by Walieldin Khidir as the rivals' attack increased with each minute and finally managed a clean sheet.

  • Mohamed Abdelmonem of Egypt Afcon 2021.

    Mohamed Abdelmonem - 9/10

He opened the score in the 35th minute with a pinpoint header after Egypt had wasted a number of their clear cut chances.

The full-back also carried his defensive duties with discipline.

  • Omar Kamal, Future FC

    Omar Kamal - 7/10

He failed to score his first international goal in the 25th minute when he was sent through on goal by a superb Mohamed Salah pass. Before he could pull the trigger while unmarked inside the area, two Sudanese defenders closed in on him to block him.

He was, however, able to deal with insistent attacks launched by the opponents through his wing.

  • Amr El Solia of Egypt.

    Amr El Solia - 7.5/10

Although he was largely untested in the first half, his intervention in the 46th minute saved Egypt from conceding.

Sudan's Dhiya Musa made his way into the box from the right-wing but Elsoulia managed to superbly block him before the ball was cleared for safety.

  • Ahmed Hegazy of Egypt.

    Ahmed Hegazi - 8.5/10

The former West Bromwich Albion star was a dominant figure in the defence and made it difficult for Sudan's forwards to pose threats as he played all through the encounter.

He also offered additional aerial advantages, especially when the Pharaohs won set-pieces and he was voted man of the match.

  • Ayman Ashraf of Egypt.

    Ayman Ashraf - 6.5/10

He came close to breaking the deadlock in the 14th minute after clinically tricking his way past his marker, but Mohamed Mustafa - in Sudan's goal - denied him with a superb save.

  • Mohamed Mostafa of Egypt.

    Mostafa Mohamed - 7/10

Had a very open chance to put Egypt ahead in the first minute, but his shot flew over the bar from close range after picking up Ashraf's cross.

His powerful header - from Salah's corner - in the 32nd minute was again stopped by Sudan's goalkeeper.

  • Mohamed Elneny of Egypt.

    Mohamed Elneny - 8/10

The Arsenal star was an outstanding figure in midfield for the Pharaohs.

He managed to stifle forward moves launched by their southern neighbours and also offered numbers when the record African champions were attacking.

Elneny's pinpoint crosses to the left and right wings also managed to open up Sudan's defence that had almost proved impermeable.

  • Abdallah Said of Egypt.

    Abdalla Said - 7/10

His most open chance came in the 41st minute, but he could not manage to beat Sudan's goalkeeper, who stopped his powerful shot launched from close range.

Said was replaced by Zizo - who brought a new impetus for Egypt upon his introduction - in the 56th minute.

  • Mohamed Salah of Egypt.

    Mohamed Salah - 6/10

Could not find a way past Elsadig Hassan in the 20th minute when he was picked up by Elneny in a promising spot.

The Liverpool star was constantly put under check by Sudan's defenders, who executed their assignments with great effectiveness.

He was not as sharp as he is used to be and lost possession in the 57th minute when Egypt were attacking and looking to double their lead.

  • Omar Marmoush of Egypt.

    Omar Marmoush - 8/10

He had to switch positions intermittently to avoid the constant checks he was put under by the opponents.

He was industrious but unlucky not to get at least a goal before he was replaced by Trezeguet in the 65th minute.

  • Ahmed Zizo Sayed of Egypt.

    Ahmed Zizo - 6/10

Although he came on late, his introduction pumped more energy into Egypt's team as they managed to pin Sudan into their own area, as was the case in the first half.

  • Trezeguet of Egypt.

    Trezeguet - Not Rated

Came on for Marmoush in the second half, and the 27-year-old star helped in making the Pharaohs midfield even more stable.

  • Hamdy Fathy Abdelhalim Abdel Fattah of Egypt.

    Hamdi Fathy - Not Rated

He came on for  El Solia in the 84th minute.
