Mabena: Orlando Pirates break silence on former Royal AM and Bloemfontein Celtic star

Ndumiso Mabena, Orlando Pirates, September 2022
Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has indicated that the club's management will make a decision regarding Ndumiso Mabena's future.
  • The Spanish tactician didn't rule out signing Mabena
  • Mabena won a double treble during his stint with the Soweto giants
  • The Pirates striking department has been a problem thus far this term

WHAT HAPPENED? Riveiro has commented on the club's trainee Mabena and hinted at the fact that the decision to give the 35-year-old a contract will be made by the Pirates management.
The veteran striker is currently training with the Buccaneers having been released by Royal AM just before the recent PSL transfer window closed.
Riveiro pointed out that Mabena, who was on the books of Pirates between 2009 and 2014, has had several training sessions with the team as he looks to earn himself a deal with the Soweto giants.

WHAT DID THE RIVEIRO SAY? "About Mabena, he is training with us. He has been training with us for the last six to seven training [sessions]," Riveiro told the media.
"Let’s see what happens in the future and what management decides about Mabena’s future."

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Riveiro has had to rotate his strikers this season with Bienvenu Eva Nga, Zakhele Lepasa, and Kwame Peprah being inconsistent.
The Houghton-based giants have since re-signed Kermit Erasmus who was a reliable goalscorer for the Buccaneers in his first stint with the four-time PSL champions.
Adding Mabena to the Pirates' striking department would increase Riveiro's options and he would bring some leadership, experience, and free-kick ability to the team.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR MABENA? If Pirates don't sign Mabena, it seems the 2008-09 National First Division Golden Boot winner would not be short of options with several clubs believed to be keen to sign him.
Chippa United, TS Galaxy, Swallows FC, and Maritzburg United have also been linked with Mabena in the last few weeks. However, Swallows are currently banned from signing players.
