Southampton will soon find out the identity of their semi-final opponents. The Saints return to Premier League action against fellow strugglers Everton on Saturday - the same day that City look to respond against rivals Manchester United.

The Saints go marching through to the EFL Cup semi-finals! Southampton - the Premier League's bottom side - stun Pep Guardiola's Manchester City at St Mary's. First-half goals from Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo proved enough to send Nathan Jones' side through to the last four of the competition.

90' + 6' FULL-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 2-0 MANCHESTER CITY

90' + 4' The Saints are in control. They have the ball deep in City's half with the visitors unable to retrieve it. The hosts are almost there.

71' A warning for Southampton as City break quickly and the ball is swept out to De Bruyne on the right. The Belgian whips in a first-time cross, but Bazunu does well to collect ahead of the onrushing Haaland.

69' A relative onlooker since his introduction, Haaland's first involvement sees him look to connect with Foden's cross. But the delivery is asking a lot of the striker, who cannot direct his volley towards goal.

Jack Grealish aside, City struggled to generate a genuine attacking threat during the first half as they failed to register a shot on target. Of course, Pep Guardiola does have the likes of Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva to turn to on the bench should he wish.

Southampton lead Manchester City 2-0 heading into the break at St Mary's. Goals from Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo have put the Saints in control of this quarter-final tie, but Nathan Jones will know they cannot afford to relent in the second half.

27' City look to respond and Grealish is found in space on the left. He squares the ball for Palmer, but his shot is blocked by the well-placed Salisu.

26' Of course, we have no VAR in this competition and Lavia will be relieved that is the case. The Southampton midfielder dragged Laporte to the ground in the box as City took a free-kick. He has certainly got away with one there.

21' Mara neatly latches onto a long ball into the City box, and looks to shoot on the turn. However, his effort is well wide of the target.

18' City look to assert their authority on proceedings as they enjoy a lengthy spell of possession and keep the ball away from Southampton.

6' Loose play by Salisu is pounced on by Palmer, who races away from the Southampton defender before feeding Gundogan. But the skipper drags his effort wide from the edge of the penalty area.

5' The visitors maintain the pressure and Grealish sends in a high cross from the left, but Bazunu rises well to collect.

4' City rather fortuitously earn their first corner after the ball ricochets off Armstrong. However, Foden's delivery is dealt with by the hosts.

2' A positive start by Southampton, who enjoy a lengthy spell of possession before the ball goes behind for a City goal kick.

Nathan Jones makes five changes from Southampton's FA Cup victory over Crystal Palace at the weekend. Former Man City player Lavia returns to the starting XI after injury, while there are also recalls for Walker-Peters, Diallo, Mara and Djenepo. New signing Orsic has to settle for a place on the bench alongside Adams, who is the top scorer in this season's competition.
