Commentary

That's all for today. Thank you for following our coverage. Until next time, goodbye!
Southampton will soon find out the identity of their semi-final opponents. The Saints return to Premier League action against fellow strugglers Everton on Saturday - the same day that City look to respond against rivals Manchester United.
The Saints go marching through to the EFL Cup semi-finals! Southampton - the Premier League's bottom side - stun Pep Guardiola's Manchester City at St Mary's. First-half goals from Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo proved enough to send Nathan Jones' side through to the last four of the competition.
90' + 6' FULL-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 2-0 MANCHESTER CITY
90' + 4' The Saints are in control. They have the ball deep in City's half with the visitors unable to retrieve it. The hosts are almost there.
90' + 2' Southampton looking to put the tie to bed as they go in search of a third goal. However, they attempt one too many passes and are eventually snuffed out by City.
90' + 1' There are going to be six minutes of stoppage time. Even by City's standards, it would take some effort to salvage this tie from here.
89' Less than 60 seconds of regulation time remain. Southampton are moments away from their first semi-final since reaching the 2016-17 showpiece.
87' City just unable to find a way through the stubborn Southampton defence. Laporte sends in a cross from the left, but it is well dealt with by the hosts.
85' We are into the last five minutes at St Mary's. City enjoying most of the possession, but still to fully capitalise as of yet.
M. Oršić
A. Armstrong
83' A change for Southampton with new signing Orsic introduced in place of Armstrong.
81' There is a break in play as Alvarez stays down after he was accidentally caught by Perraud's trailing arm. Although, replays suggest the striker made more of it than necessary.
I. Diallo
Yellow Card
79' Diallo goes into the book for a rash challenge on Foden.
78' CHANCE! At the other end, neat build-up from the visitors culminates in Alvarez meeting Gundogan's low centre. The striker makes contact, but Bazunu gets down well to hold onto the ball.
77' Southampton counter and Ward-Prowse's shot deflects into the six-yard box, where Adams tucks the ball away. However, the joy is short-lived as the offside flag is rightly raised.
75' We are into the final quarter of an hour at St Mary's. Southampton still 2-0 to the good. Can they hold on, or will City produce an inspired turnaround?
73' You must go back to the 2007-08 season for City's last defeat in an EFL Cup quarter-final. There, they were beaten 2-0 by eventual winners Tottenham.
71' A warning for Southampton as City break quickly and the ball is swept out to De Bruyne on the right. The Belgian whips in a first-time cross, but Bazunu does well to collect ahead of the onrushing Haaland.
69' A relative onlooker since his introduction, Haaland's first involvement sees him look to connect with Foden's cross. But the delivery is asking a lot of the striker, who cannot direct his volley towards goal.
66' A loose De Bruyne pass goes straight to Walker-Peters. The wing-back drills the ball across the face of goal, but Adams cannot react quickly enough to apply the vital touch.
65' Southampton have certainly turned the tables today. The Saints do not look like a side propping up the Premier League table having lost six straight games.
Rodri
K. Phillips
63' City's final change sees Rodri replace Phillips, whose first start for the Citizens comes to a premature end.
C. Adams
S. Mara
62' Another change for the Saints sees Adams replace Mara.
M. Elyounoussi
R. Lavia
62' Southampton turn to the bench as Elyounoussi replaces Lavia.
60' Southampton embark on an attack down the right with Walker-Peters leading the charge. However, his eventual cross is dealt with by City.
59' Guardiola has lost just two of his 29 EFL Cup matches in charge of City. The Spaniard is clearly worried a third defeat may not be far away as he introduces Haaland.
R. Perraud
M. Djenepo
57' Djenepo is unable to continue and is replaced by Perraud.
E. Haaland
J. Grealish
56' Guardiola decides now is the time to introduce Haaland, with Grealish the man to make way.
55' There is a break in play as Djenepo stays down following a collision with Grealish. The medical team is on to tend to the Southampton goalscorer.
54' De Bruyne involved again as Foden tees up the Belgian to cross into the box. Grealish looks to attack it, but is snuffed out by the Southampton defence before Bazunu gathers.
52' City are unbeaten in their five matches since the season resumed following the World Cup. However, they must show more if they are to preserve that run and turn this contest on its head.
50' The hosts go in search of a third goal and Armstrong cuts inside before letting fly from the edge of the box. However, he drags his effort well wide of the target.
49' Southampton are aiming to become only the second team after Manchester United to beat City in 90 minutes in this competition under Guardiola.
47' CHANCE! De Bruyne straight into the action with a precise throughball for Alvarez, who drags his shot wide of the target.
46' Southampton kick things off in the second half.
M. Akanji
K. Walker
46' Walker is the third player pulled at half-time. Akanji comes on in the heart of defence.
N. Aké
Sergio Gómez
46' Gomez also makes way with Ake taking his place.
K. De Bruyne
C. Palmer
46' City make a triple-change at the break. De Bruyne is introduced in place of Palmer.
Jack Grealish aside, City struggled to generate a genuine attacking threat during the first half as they failed to register a shot on target. Of course, Pep Guardiola does have the likes of Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva to turn to on the bench should he wish.
Southampton lead Manchester City 2-0 heading into the break at St Mary's. Goals from Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo have put the Saints in control of this quarter-final tie, but Nathan Jones will know they cannot afford to relent in the second half.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 2-0 MANCHESTER CITY
45' There is going to be a single minute of additional time at the end of this first half.
42' The visitors looking to respond before the break and Southampton will be eager to go in at half-time with their 2-0 lead still intact. A City goal here would mean a different contest upon the restart.
40' Conceding twice already, City have let in as many goals inside the opening 40 minutes here than they had in their previous eight away games.
38' Southampton have every right to be pleased with their efforts so far, but one cause for concern will be the freedom Grealish is enjoying on the left flank. The Saints will know they cannot afford him too many opportunities to hurt them.
36' Guardiola looks to encourage his players from the touchline. City have only lost once in their 15 previous meetings with Southampton since the Spaniard took charge. That sole defeat came courtesy of a 1-0 reverse here in July 2020.
34' A clever dummy from Grealish allows him to burst away from Lyanco. The England winger goes for goal from a tight angle, but his effort is blocked by Caleta-Car.
32' Who saw this coming?! The Premier League's bottom side are 2-0 to the good against the team that has dominated this competition in recent seasons.
30' Djenepo doubled the lead with his first Southampton goal since netting in their 3-0 win over Bournemouth in the FA Cup quarter-finals in March 2021.
R. Lavia
Assist
28' Lavia found Djenepo, who did the rest in spectacular fashion.
M. Djenepo
Goal
28' DJENEPO!!! WHAT A GOAL! 2-0 SOUTHAMPTON! The Saints double their lead and how?! Receiving the ball in space, Djenepo spots Ortega off his line and beats the goalkeeper with a tremendous 30-yard lob that sends St Mary's into raptures.
27' City look to respond and Grealish is found in space on the left. He squares the ball for Palmer, but his shot is blocked by the well-placed Salisu.
26' Of course, we have no VAR in this competition and Lavia will be relieved that is the case. The Southampton midfielder dragged Laporte to the ground in the box as City took a free-kick. He has certainly got away with one there.
R. Lavia
Yellow Card
25' Lavia drags back Gundogan and receives the first yellow card of the match.
S. Mara
Goal
23' MARA!!! 1-0 SOUTHAMPTON! He doesn't miss this time! Lyanco intercepts Gomez's pass and embarks on a strong run down the right flank. He then whips in a low cross that is brilliantly swept in by Mara, who demonstrated wonderful movement to lose Walker.
Lyanco
Assist
23' Lyanco brilliantly anticipated Gomez's pass and executed his cross superbly for Mara to finish.
21' Mara neatly latches onto a long ball into the City box, and looks to shoot on the turn. However, his effort is well wide of the target.
19' The visitors threaten down the left flank and Grealish looks to feed the ball into the box. However, his cross is deflected and subsequently gathered by Bazunu.
18' City look to assert their authority on proceedings as they enjoy a lengthy spell of possession and keep the ball away from Southampton.
16' The hosts paraded new signing Carlos Alcaraz before kick-off at St Mary's. Jones will hope the Argentine will bolster the Saints' midfield in their quest to move away from the Premier League relegation zone.
14' It is worth noting that Southampton have prevailed from three of their four previous EFL Cup ties with Man City. Although, they lost their most recent showdown in 2019-20.
12' Though not enjoying most of the possession, Jones will be pleased by the start Southampton have made to this contest. The hosts have carried a genuine attacking threat and asked questions of the City defence.
10' Almost two years since his last Southampton goal, Djenepo tries his luck from distance. But the winger's ambitious attempt is always rising and never troubling Ortega.
8' GOOD SAVE! From the resulting corner, the ball drops nicely for Caleta-Car on the edge of the box. The defender's left-footed volley is creeping into the bottom corner, but Ortega gets down well to tip it away.
7' Southampton attack at the other end and it takes a brilliantly timed sliding challenge by Laporte to stop Djenepo in his tracks. Can the Saints capitalise from this corner?
6' Loose play by Salisu is pounced on by Palmer, who races away from the Southampton defender before feeding Gundogan. But the skipper drags his effort wide from the edge of the penalty area.
5' The visitors maintain the pressure and Grealish sends in a high cross from the left, but Bazunu rises well to collect.
4' City rather fortuitously earn their first corner after the ball ricochets off Armstrong. However, Foden's delivery is dealt with by the hosts.
2' A positive start by Southampton, who enjoy a lengthy spell of possession before the ball goes behind for a City goal kick.
1' The referee blows his whistle and City get the ball rolling.
The players are coming out onto the pitch and kick-off is moments away.
City have won each of their last eight EFL Cup quarter-final ties, subsequently going on to lift the trophy on six of those occasions. Meanwhile, Southampton have prevailed from just one of their eight previous such encounters.
With Saturday's Manchester derby in mind, Pep Guardiola makes four alterations from City's win over Chelsea. The likes of De Bruyne, Haaland and Silva have to settle for a place on the bench, while Walker partners Laporte in the centre of defence. Coming into the side are Cancelo, Phillips, Gundogan and Grealish.
Nathan Jones makes five changes from Southampton's FA Cup victory over Crystal Palace at the weekend. Former Man City player Lavia returns to the starting XI after injury, while there are also recalls for Walker-Peters, Diallo, Mara and Djenepo. New signing Orsic has to settle for a place on the bench alongside Adams, who is the top scorer in this season's competition.
