United now go into the hat for today's fourth round draw - those ties will be played shortly after the conclusion of the World Cup - before tackling Fulham in their final Premier League fixture ahead of the break. Villa, meanwhile, must lick their wounds and prepare for Sunday's trip to Brighton.

Very rarely can there have been a more obvious 'game of two halves'. Following 45 drab and disjointed minutes before the break - in which neither side forced a shot on target - a spectacular second period brought six goals: four for a much-improved Manchester United, who were also aided by Aston Villa's defensive deficiencies. The visitors at least showed some intent to twice take the lead, but were ultimately blown away by their hosts' fluency in the final third - particularly after the introduction of Eriksen and Garnacho.

85' Garnacho continues to cause uncertainty in the Villa defence, and a combiantion with Fernandes almost unlocks another shooting chance. However, he ends the move lying on the turf in apparent agony and will need some medical attention.

71' After a brief pause while Watkins nurses an injury down on the turf, the action resumes in a relentless second half, which bears absolutely no resemblance to the first!

69' After a tussle between Young and Garnacho, which the former ultimately wins deep inside his own area, Villa then give the ball away again. Fernandes seizes on it and makes for the left byline, before getting his shot from a tight angle all wrong; completely missing the target and sending the ball flashing across the face of goal.

Taking advantage of some confusion in the Aston Villa box, Rashford receives a return ball from Eriksen via a heavy deflection, then stays strong to evade a couple of hefty challenges and slot the ball past Olsen from less than 10 yards out! We're level again at Old Trafford in this frantic second half: 2-2!

64' CLOSE! Malacia lofts the ball over an exposed Chambers, setting Rashford free around 30 yards out from goal. The striker takes a couple of touches and then fires the ball narrowly wide of the right-hand post!

He stays cool to slip the ball beyond Dubravka and into the bottom-right corner! What a start to the second half: 1-0 to Villa!

As things stand, penalties await us: in the EFL Cup, if the game remains level at the end of 90 minutes, spot-kicks ensue. Neither manager will want to enter that lottery, so they may both take a more offensive approach at some point in the second half.

An almost eventless first half ends goalless, with neither side even managing a single shot on target. While Aston Villa have lacked both ambition and quality on the ball, Manchester United have seemed almost disengaged at times - perhaps a looming World Cup is playing on the minds of several players. Whatever the cause, it's been a very different encounter to that which the clubs played out at the weekend, and can surely only get better after the break.

45' Ramsey brings down Malacia on the left touchline, conceding a free-kick late on in the first half. Then, from Fernandes' ball into the box, Olsen makes a hefty punch clear of his area.

42' Summing up the distracted nature of their play so far, United fail to make anything of an opening down the right, when Fernandes' low throughball to Dalot is clumsily miscontrolled out of play for a Villa goal-kick.

40' An aggressive barge on Young, which flattens his former team-mate, sees McTominay receive a merited yellow card.

39' From almost 30 yards out, Rashford takes the somehwat desperate route of thumping a free-kick straight into Villa's defensive wall. That was always a long shot; a chance to create something wasted.

37' Though Rashford is presented with the ball by Chambers out on the right, Fred's subsequent cross to the back post is badly overhit and drifts past Fernandes, who arrived late into the box.

35' Over the past five minutes, Aston Villa have enjoyed 63 per cent of the possession, as they experience their first spell of pressure on the Manchester United goal.

34' Following a collision with Maguire in the United half, Ings is left down on the turf and the game comes to a temporary halt. Having recovered soon after, the action gets back under way.

32' Another inswinging corner from Luiz is only partly cleared, and dreaming of a perfect return to Old Trafford, Young slices an ambitious 20-yard volley well wide of the right-hand post.

30' OFF THE LINE! Augustinsson wins a corner on the left, from which set-piece specialist Luiz slings over a dangerous inswinging cross to the near post. McTominay is alert to head the ball away near off his goal line, though, with Dubravka close behind!

28' A rare foray into United's defensive third ends for Villa when Konsa commits a handball offence out on the right. They have not committed any numbers forward to this point, but will that change before the interval?

26' Villa are being gradually penned in by their hosts, as United try to build some sustained pressure. The away side remain fairly comfortable in their defensive shape, though.

24' JUST OVER! After Rashford slips in Malacia down the left, the full-back's deflected cross loops up towards Dalot, who arrives late near the penalty spot. His header, though, has too much spin to drop down on target before going out of play. Still, that's about as close as either side have come to an opener so far.

22' Not surprisingly, a radically overhauled United XI - with several players set for the World Cup later this month - has been rather disjointed so far.

20' Remarkably, Manchester United have lost each of their last three EFL Cup games at Old Trafford. Eager for some silverware in his first season, Erik ten Hag will certainly want to end that run today.

18' At the end of a move in which Rashford is caught offside, the England striker streaks clear and plays in Fernandes, who rolls the ball into the back of the net. Play had long stopped, though, and Aston Villa have a free-kick.

16' The subdued start continues, and a rare direct ball from left to right by Rashford finds Fernandes offside - he boots the ball away into the crowd in frustration.

14' Van de Beek is perhaps fortunate to escape a booking for a clumsy challenge on Augustinsson inside Villa's half. Only a free-kick is awarded to the visitors.

13' While United have had 68 per cent of the possession in the early stages of this cup tie, they have yet to make much progress in Villa's defensive third. Urgency has been in short supply.

11' After Young makes a late sliding challenge to deny Malacia a route to goal from the left side of the area, Watkins clears the danger for Villa following an inswinging corner from the left.

9' After misjudging a ball across his box, Olsen has to scramble to sweep the ball behind under pressure from Fernandes. United then waste the consequent corner.

7' An ambitious ball straight through the middle by McGinn skips up off the turf and sails just over Watkins' head, allowing debutant Dubravka to claim the ball on the edge of his area.

5' Villa enjoy a short spell on the ball, but Augustinsson's misplaced throughball is then easily cut out by an alert Dalot, deep inside his own half.

3' Though they've quite deliberately retained the ball, showing no sign of urgency at all, United are rarely straying outside their own half in quite a conservative start to the game.

After Old Trafford observes 'The Last Post', ahead of Remembrance Day tomorrow, the players take up their positions and kick off is now just moments away.

Like their hosts, Aston Villa make seven changes to their starting XI, with only Konsa, Luiz, Ramsey and Watkins retained by Emery for his second game in charge. Sweden internationals Olsen and Augstinsson, plus ex-United player Young, are drafted in; Mings, Cash and Buendia are among those who make way.

After several months on the sidelines as De Gea's deputy, Dubravka makes his belated Manchester United debut today. World Cup-bound Maguire also joins Malacia, McTominay, Fred, Fernandes and the recently returned Martial in a much-changed side. Ronaldo drops out entirely; Van de Beek, though, continues in midfield.

Four days after their victory over today's hosts in the Premier League, Aston Villa will aim to complete a quickfire double in Manchester. Unai Emery kicked off his Villa Park reign with a 3-1 victory over United, and will now aim to guide his new club one step closer to a sixth EFL Cup win. The most recent of those triumphs came in the 1996 season, and though Villa reached the final of the 2020 edition they have not claimed major silverware since. The Villans arrive at Old Trafford on a five-game winless run away from home; having failed to score in three of their last four fixtures on the road.

Manchester United saw a nine-game unbeaten run come to an end last weekend, as they were beaten by today's opponents at Villa Park. They now get a chance for immediate revenge, back on home soil. The five-time EFL Cup winners - who most recently lifted the trophy in 2017 - fell at this stage to West Ham United last term, and they meet Villa for the fourth time in the competition, including the 1994 and 2010 finals.
