Rodrygo Vinicius Junior hug Copa del Rey 2022-23
Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo played a part in both Real Madrid goals as they saw off Osasuna to win their first Copa del Rey since 2014.

Rodrygo bagged a brace, while Vinicius Junior ran riot to lead Real Madrid to a 2-1 win over Osasuna, the duo working in tandem to rescue an otherwise unsteady performance as Madrid won their first domestic cup in almost 10 years.

Vinicius Junior set up the opener for Madrid two minutes into the action, winding through three Osasuna defenders before feeding Rodrygo, who guided his finish into the bottom corner. But both sides had chances in the first half. David Alaba smacked a swerving free-kick off the bar from 30 yards out. Osasuna threatened with Ruben Pena seeing an effort cleared off the line.

Osasuna eventually pulled one back, as former Madrid midfielder Lucas Torro smashed a shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards out.

Rodrygo crushed Osasuna's hopes of silverware, though, grabbing a 70th-minute winner with an opportunistic chip after the ball bounced around in the Osasuna box.

Despite Rodrygo's brace, this was Vinicius Junior's night. The winger was electric all evening, tormenting an Osasuna back four that was simply devoid of answers. By the end he was pivoting, darting and nutmegging for fun - a truly world class performance from a player who embraces the big games.

Los Blancos have dropped out of the La Liga title picture this year, and need to look elsewhere for trophies. On Saturday, they secured one. With the Champions League semi-final first leg against Manchester City upcoming, attention quickly turns to the next task.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Thibaut Courtois (6/10):

Didn't have much to do. Overhit a pass or two.

    Dani Carvajal (8/10):

Cleared one off the line and made a crucial late tackle to prevent Osasuna from scoring. One of his better showings of the season. Looked exhausted by the end of things.

    Eder Militao (6/10):

Criticised by his manager in recent weeks for a string of poor performances. Wasn't necessarily world class here, especially in possession, but kept things simple at the back.

    David Alaba (6/10):

Cracked a free kick off the bar from 30 yards out. Solid at centre-back before putting in a shift on the left.

    Eduardo Camavinga (7/10):

Another impressive performance at left-back for a player who continues to insist he's not a left-back. Shifted over to defensive midfield position to see things out.

  2. Midfield

    Midfield

    Federico Valverde (7/10):

A bit of a mixed bag. Very steady in possession and unafraid to have a go from distance, but only played four passes into the final third.

    Aurelien Tchaoumeni (7/10):

Tackled and hunted the ball down well. Also rather impressive in distribution. Faded in the second half, though.

    Toni Kroos (6/10):

Completed the most passes in the match, but it was his man that scored Osasuna's goal.

  3. Attack

    Attack

    Rodrygo (8/10):

Bagged a brace to win it for Madrid. Another impressive night for a player who continues to impress on the big stage.

    Karim Benzema (5/10):

What's wrong at the moment? Skied a couple of chances, occasionally loose in possession.

    Vinicius Junior (9/10):

Excellent from the get-go. Set up Rodrygo's opener with a sublime piece of skill and cutback. Was involved in the second with another impressive run. Terrified the Osasuna backline with his pace and trickery all night long.

  4. Subs & Manager

    Subs & Manager

    Antonio Rudiger (6/10):

An odd introduction with 20 minutes to play.

    Luka Modric (6/10):

A welcome return from injury for a lively 10 minute cameo.

    Marco Asensio (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

    Carlo Ancelotti (7/10):

Shuffled things a bit, using Valverde as a centre-midfielder with Luka Modric out. His approach proved to be mostly solid, although a blip in the second half let Osasuna back into it. But they grabbed their winner and were relatively composed in the final minutes. One trophy down, Manchester City in the Champions League semi-final standing in the way of another.
