A crucial win for Mauricio Pochettino's side will keep their hopes of qualifying for next year's Champions League alive

Tottenham will clash with Newcastle United at Wembley on Wednesday evening in what will be a crucial game in their hopes of finishing in the top four.

Pressure will mount on Mauricio Pochettino's side knowing that Champions League football will be secured should they win their last two remaining games.

Spurs, however, come fresh off a shock 1-0 loss to newly-relegated West Brom and sit just two points above fifth-placed Chelsea, who recorded a victory 1-0 over Liverpool on Sunday.

Newcastle sit comfortably in 10th place though are on a poor run of form, having lost their last three matches. Rafael Benitez's side face a tough end-of-season run-in having to play both Spurs and Chelsea.

Earlier in the season, Pochettino's men registered a 2-0 win over the Magpies in a heated encounter at St James' Park that involved Jonjoy Shelvey being sent off early in the second half.

Match Preview

Spurs will be buoyed by their home advantage and Harry Kane eyeing the chance to equal sixth-placed George Hunt (138 goals) in Tottenham's all-time leading scorers list.

Having failed to lift silverware this season – coming up short in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europe – anything less than qualifying for the Champions League next season would be seen as a disappointment for Pochettino and his side.

Sunday's loss against West Brom was the first time that Spurs have failed to score for the first time in 24 matches, though will be comforted knowing that Newcastle registering just one win in their last eight away fixtures.

Benitez will be seeking to end his season on a positive note after losing their last three matches on the bounce, and he could do just that with a result taken from either Spurs or Chelsea.

Pochettino is aware of the weight of Champions League football on his shoulders, admitting that they have their own fate in their hands.
