SuperSport United coach Kaitano Tembo has lauded the fighting spirit which his side displayed in their win over Free State Stars.

On Wednesday evening, Matsatsantsa were forced to dig deep within themselves as Teboho Mokoena came up with the all-important winner in the 89th minute, with the game evenly poised at 2-2. The victory did SuperSport a world of good as they currently find themselves in a rather unfamiliar relegation dog fight. But the three points meant that the 2017 Caf Confederation Cup finalists were able to open a one-point gap between themselves and fellow strugglers Ajax Cape Town.

“I think we could have scored more, but at the same time we really worked for the goals that we scored especially in the first half,” Tembo told SuperSport TV.

"I think in the first (half) we had a few good clear-cut chances that we did not take. Sometimes when you are not doing well you lose a little bit of confidence and we sat back a little bit and started panicking," he added.

"We made couples of errors and they equalised, but after that we responded very well. We got our second goal and again we did not defend well," the Zimbabwean mentor continued.

"But I am really happy with the fighting spirit from the guys. I think they left everything in the field today and that’s what we have been asking from them," he explained.

"Today (Wednesday) they showed that they can still give us that and we are really proud of them," he concluded.

Tembo will now need to get his team ready in time for their next match which is a tricky trip to the Eastern Cape to take on Chippa United in the penultimate game of the season. SuperSport will hope to do the business while relying on their neighbours Mamelodi Sundowns who lock horns with the Urban Warriors, knowing all too well that victory over the Cape Town outfit will see them crowned PSL champions to do them a favour.
