Al Hilal vs Chelsea: Team news & key stats

Al Hilal have several former Premier League players in their ranks in former Manchester United and Watford striker Odion Ighalo besides midfielder Matheus Pereira and winger Andre Carrillo who also represented Watford in the English top-flight.

Chelsea right-back Reece James unlikely to make the squad on account of a hamstring injury. Mason Mount and Cesar Azpilicueta picked up knocks against Plymouth in the FA Cup but may play while Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ben Chilwell are set to miss out.

FA Cup shootout hero Kepa Arrizabalaga should start given that Edouard Mendy hasn't spent much time with the club after helping Senegal win their first ever Afcon title.

Manager Thomas Tuchel won't be on the bench after testing positive for COVID-19.

Key Stats:

  • This will be Chelsea’s second appearance at the FIFA Club World Cup and first since 2012, having beaten Bayern Munich on penalties in the UEFA Champions League final to qualify for the competition that year. They made the FIFA Club World Cup final in 2012 where they were beaten 1-0 by Brazilian side Corinthians.
  • The UEFA Champions League winners have made the final of the FIFA Club World Cup at 16 of the previous 17 editions of the tournament, with Manchester United in 2000 being the only such side to fail to reach the competition’s showcase.
  • Al-Hilal come into this game on a six-game unbeaten run in all competitions (W4 D2), beating Al Jazira 6-1 in the last round of this competition with all six of their goals being scored by different players, including two former Premier League stars (Odion Ighalo and Matheus Pereira).
  • Chelsea captain César Azpilicueta is the only remaining player from the Blues’ previous appearance at the FIFA Club World Cup, back in December 2012, featuring in both games against Monterrey (90 minutes) and Corinthians (7 minutes).
  • Al-Hilal’s Matheus Pereira netted a brace for West Brom against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last season as the Baggies ran out shock 5-2 winners.
