Commentary

Some quick thoughts to close this out. It was a strong showing from the USA across the board really. Plenty of chances created, very few given away. Again, it's fair to question how talented this Panama team is or the level of competition, but don't forget that Panama played in the 2018 World Cup and, while that was a team missing several key players, the USA did not play in Russia and this was an all MLS lineup. So take it for what it is, but it was promising at the very least. Let the questions begin for how all of this will work as we move in the European based players, but a few of the fresh faces tonight certainly gave the coaching staff something to think on moving forward.
And that's it! A 3-0 win for the USMNT in Berhalter's first game in charge. Really a strong showing, though it's fair to question the quality of the opponent.

89' Lewis just skinned his defender one v one, with Ramirez finding just a little pocket of space in front of goal for the easiest of finished.
89' Lewis to Ramirez and it's 3-0!
88' Now a corner coming from the USA but this one drifts long and is played back to midfield.
86' Trapp with a good job getting that one clear.
85' USA hands out a foul near the touchline. Let's see if they've adjusted from the last set piece in this type of area when they gave up a free header.

83' That puts a bit of gloss on the scoreline. Fully deserved honestly, to be two in front. Panama with a corner coming and a chance to get one back, but a couple more changes coming in first.

80' GOAL!!! Zimmerman gets on the end of Lima's cross. That's great play from Lima to win that ball - stopping a counter for Panama and setting up a goal for the USA along the way. It's 2-0 now!
79' The USA still pressing the pace some with fresh legs on the pitch. Corner coming here but Panama gets it clear... great tackle from Lima as Panama looks to break and he floats one in....
76' Johnson called into action in the U.S. goal for the first time and makes a nice stop. Then is asked to work a ball out from his feet and did alright with that as well.

75' Steffen has seen his last action of the night. Paul Arriola also about to step on for the USA. With all the changes, we've been a bit disjointed here in the second half.

72' Lleget brought some energy on the field with him. Breaking forward out of the midfield a few times now and spaking an attack.

71' Substitution Ernesto Emanuel Walker Willis Rolando Vicente Botello Garibaldo
71' Header flashed just wide of Steffen's net. Not exactly the type of set-piece defending we're looking for there.
70' Sloppy pass out of the back from Zimmerman leads to a turnover in midfield and a chance for Panama. And they'll get another look as a foul comes following the clearance.
67' Lewis jumps on for Ebobisse. It won't be a memorable match for the Timbers forward, who picked up a knock and really didn't get involved as much as he would have liked.

64' Lletget's first action sets a chance in for Zardes. Really strong run through the middle and he lays it off to Zardes who gets the chance but can't find the finish.

62' Substitution Djordje Mihailovic Sebastian Lletget
61' Mihailovic this time from range hits the target but it's an easy save. That'll be his last action of the night, with Lletget stepping on for him here after an hour. Really good showing, capped by the goal. He's filled well and he and Roldan have been strong for the USA tonight.
60' Another good look for Mihailovic, filling in the top of the box again. This one blocked away.
59' The postive side is being shown now, with Zardes played in down the left and forcing a punch from the goalkeeper to knock the ball away from an onrushing U.S. attacker.
57' Both teams looks more open now, stretched might be a better way to say it. The chance a couple minutes ago was the first time the USA was really opened up in any way, and that's the danger when you press and stretch the match out.
56' The first big save of the day for Steffen. Panama breaks in down the left and the former Crew goalkeeper had to come up with a big stop. The USA gets the corner clear.
51' The second half, if the first few minutes is anything to jude by, may be a bit more open.
49' Ebobisse wins a corner in the early minutes of the second half. He's not been involved enough for me. A lot of work down the right with Baird so far.

45' And we're off in the second half! No changes for the USA, but Panama switching a few things up along the way.
First half thoughts on Berhalter's first match in charge: 1. SPACE! They've opened it up. It's clear the wingers will be hugging the line. How this will work for the team once you see Pulisic, Weah, Wood, Altidore and the rest move in is yet to be seen. But that's clearly the theory. 2. Bradley has been sharp. Michael Bradley looks every bit the veteran leader. There's been plenty of debate on him, is his time with the USA done ect.. Berhalter did not make him the captain for tonight, but don't read too much into that. He's got a role to play on this team moving forward. 3. Panama a good opeining test. Honestly, 2018's run of fixtures, England, Italy, Brazil, Colombia, France... I mean, this team wasn't really ready for that. But tonight Panama looks like a nice building block match for this team to put into action many of the things they've worked on.
There's the end of the first half. Really not a bad showing. You would like to see better finishing, a bit better play in the final third, but for the most part a solid first 45 for Berhalter in his coaching debut.
45' + 2' Baird is really having a run at it down the right. Showing pace, good runs, has the one assist. Honestly, could have a couple. He's looked good here tonight. He and Mihailovic really making a case for more looks with how they've played tonight.
45' Good ball from Bradley to spring Mihailovic down the left and he rolls one back across the middle. Some interesting looks from the USA to this point with both Roldan and Mihailovic making those runs to fill space.
42' So the USA has taken the lead here at the end of the first half. Zardes just gave up a sloppy foul, but beyond that this has been a fairly crisp showing for the first match of the year.

39' GOAL!!!! The USA has taken the lead through Mihailovic! Lima with the first ball in for Zardes, who is bumped off it only to have Baird pick it up on the wing and pick out the streaking midfielder for the strike!
38' Great cut back from Roldan and it slips through two attacking players who just can't get a touch on it. Lovitz then fires one in from the left and Zardes flashes another header wide.
37' Mihailovic with a very ambitious ball forward for Baird. Cut out by Panama. The USA may need to take a bit more care on the counterattack when they get those rare chances here.
35' The USA now facing some pressure from Panama, having to defend a bit more than at any other point in the first half to this point.
32' Panama putting together their best spell of play on the night. But, for all the space they're opening up in the attack, this U.S. group looks very compact when they do transition back to defense.
30' Shouts for a penalty but nothing coming there. Zardes turned it over but Mihailovic pouned and touched it past a defender only to be blocked off.
28' That was dangerous! Roldan flashed a header at the near post back across goal and the others runners couldn't get there.
27' Nice work from Baird to keep it in down the right and get a cross in. Another corner coming for the USA and Ebobisse sprints back onto the pitch.
25' Another decent look for the USA, Zardes laying it back to Baird who pushed it just wide of the post.
23' We're back up and moving. Corner coming up for the USA here. Mihailovic to take it and he's floated it in a long way. Panama looking to break after getting it cleared and the USA win it back and start to build again.
21' Extended delay here. But both players are back up on their feet.
18' Clash of heads has things stopped for a moment. Ebobisse the American down after taking a shot to the back of his head. Panama with a man down as well.
16' Still looking for a way through here, but the opening quarter of an hour has been impressive for the USA in a lot of ways. They're playing with a lot of freedom and space and it works into a shot for Roldan, though he slipped a bit on the bay through and the shot skidded in.
11' Early observations for USMNT fans here. The wingers are very much hugging the touchline in the attack. That's a bit of a change from the old days of guys dipping inside more often than not. It's opening up a lot of space through the channels for both Mihailovic and Roldan to fill. Bradley is sitting in behind a bit with the back side fullbacks tucking in beside him when the USA has possesion.
8' The first good look of the night fell to Zardes. Ebobisse floated in a cross from the left after what was, in truth, a really nice little move from the USA, moving down the right and switching play over to the left. The header was off target from Zardes, but good play to set the table there.
7' The USMT being a little sloppy coming out of the back there. Nothing bad comes of it, but you can see the want to play out of the back.
4' Panama really struggling to get out of their own end in the early going. Some high pressing from the USA and it's working well to this point. A lot of possesion for the USA and they're moving the ball well.
3' Early foul called on the USA for a high boot. Feeling out process early on here.
1' Here we go! USA in the blue kit moving right to left as I see it. Panama in the all white.
The Panama team is missing several key names and, in truth, we don't know a lot about them. Arroyo up top is the danger man with Sinclair working in behind him, but no Torres, no Perez, no Tejada in the group, so a new-look Panama.
A familiar setup for Berhalter with Zardes in the middle of the attack. He's opted for Baird and Ebobisse on the wings with a midfield three of Roldan, Bradley and Milhalovic. Lovitz starts of the left of the back line with Long and Zimmerman in the center and Lima on the right.
This should be an interesting one to follow along with. Some names many won't know much about on display tonight, but this is a step toward the USA's return to competition, and with the Gold Cup just around the corner a chance for some of these players to make a mark.
But Bradley is not the captain tonight. That honor belongs to New York Red Bulls defender Aaron Long, who will be earning his third cap.
To give you some idea how inexperienced this team is, Michael Bradley will earn cap number 143 tonight. That's 76 more than the rest of the team combined. Gyasi Zardes (41) is the only other player in double digits.
Here's a look at Berhalter's first lineup. 1-Zack Steffen, 2-Nick Lima, 3-Aaron Long (capt.), 4-Michael Bradley, 5-Daniel Lovitz, 7-Corey Baird, 8-Djordje Mihailovic, 9-Gyasi Zardes, 10-Cristian Roldan, 11-Jeremy Ebobisse, 25-Walker Zimmerman
Welcome in to Goal's LIVE call of the USA vs Panama. This will mark the start of the Gregg Berhalter era for the USMNT, his first game in charge of the team since taking over for Dave Sarachan in December.
