Karim Benzema scored late in the first half to seal a 1-0 win for Real Madrid against Athletic Club at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

Both teams made errors that led to big chances created and were inviting the opposition’s pressure.

History did, however, favour Los Blancos in this fixture as they have now not lost a game at home to Athletic Club in the past six games in the league.

  • Ferland Mendy of Real Madrid.

    Ferland Mendy - 7.07

Mendy has shown his consistency over the past couple of games since returning from injury with yet another good performance.

The French man alongside Vinicius Jr created a good amount of chances from the left side of the Real Madrid attack. He kept the ball well and defensively he made some good recovery tackles.

  • Thibaut Courtois of Real Madrid.

    Thibaut Courtois - 7.12

The Man of Match for the evening and deservedly so, he made some big saves to keep Real Madrid safe.

Courtois has been hard to beat in the goal this season and his presence alone helps the defence’s confidence.

His distribution from the back has been underrated but is proving to be one of the main catalysts for swift counter-attacks.

  • Vinicius Jr of Real Madrid.

    Vinicius Jr - 7.48

The Brazilian keeps showing growth and maturity on and off the ball, he is a player playing with so much confidence.

Vinicius was a constant headache for the Athletic Club defence with his skills and pace. The 21-year-old winger made five key passes on the night, his brilliant run and pass to Asensio led to the only goal of the game.

  • Karim Benzema of Real Madrid.

    Karim Benzema - 7.51

Benzema came in the clutch yet again for Los Blancos after he pounced on a Luka Modric mishit to give the hosts the lead.

He was a threat in the first half causing the defence all sorts of problems. In the second half, it wasn’t the same story with Athletic Club looking for an equalizer; he had to do more pressing from the front and defending set-pieces.

  • Eder Militao of Real Madrid.

    Eder Militao - 7.67

Things did not start off too well for the Brazilian as he made errors that the away side could have capitalized on.

But he did grow into his own as the game went on by putting a wonderful defensive display which included nine clearances. Athletic Club applied the pressure to get at least a point out of the game but Militao stood firm and made sure that his team kept a clean sheet.
