That concludes our commentary of the international friendly between Argentina and Jamaica! We hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Argentina have one final tune-up game ahead of the World Cup - against the UAE on November 15. Jamaica’s next fixture is in 2023, when they travel to play Mexico in the Nations League in March.
Argentina were not at their scintillating best but still managed to overcome Jamaica, winning the friendly at Red Bull Arena 3-0. A first-half goal from Alvarez looked to be the only difference between the two sides as time wore on, with the Manchester City forward’s close-range strike breaking the deadlock after just 13 minutes but the introduction of Messi changed the complexion of the match; as is so often the case. The PSG forward first doubled his side’s advantage four minutes from time, taking advantage of late, lax defending to get past Johnson and slot past Blake before making it three to the Albiceleste with an incredibly accurate free-kick. It’s not all bad news for the Reggae Boyz, who performed well for large stretches of the game against a challenging and in-form opponent.
90' + 1' The fourth official indicates three minutes will be added to the end of the match for stoppages.
L. Messi
89' MESSI MAKES IT 90 GOALS FOR ARGENTINA! 3-0! It’s two goals in three minutes for the Paris Saint-Germain magician, who wraps his free-kick from 18 yards out low around the wall to catch the goalkeeper off-guard!
J. Lowe
M. Antonio
87' Jamal Lowe is sent on for Antonio with just a couple minutes left in the contest.
G. Lo Celso
86' Lo Celso's bouncing pass for Messi is the assist, with the Albiceleste adding to their lead late in the match.
L. Messi
86' MESSI DOUBLES THE ADVANTAGE! 2-0! It’s a goal out of nowhere, with the captain getting onto the ball 25 yards from goal ahead of Johnson, taking a couple of touches to sort his feet out before dispatching a low effort into the bottom corner!
85' Messi’s inviting cross to the far post prompts a forward run from Tagliafico, who softly volleys his off-balance effort towards the awaiting arms of Blake.
84' Messi and De Paul work a neat one-two just outside the Jamaica penalty area but the captain’s eventual shot is low and simple for the goalkeeper to gather.
83' Bailey hangs a high left-footed cross into the penalty area which is met by a leaping Emiliano Martinez, who makes the clean catch.
81' Bailey loses possession in front of the technical area and sticks out a leg in a poor attempt to win back the ball, catching De Paul’s ankle. It’s a free-kick for Argentina, who look relatively happy with their 1-0 lead.
K. Parris
J. Brown
79' Brown will be unable to continue, with Parris the player sent on in his stead.
N. Molina
G. Montiel
79' An alteration at full-back sees Molina take the place of Montiel for Argentina.
J. Correa
J. Álvarez
78' Inter's Joaquin Correa replaces Alvarez on the left wing.
Lisandro Martínez
Á. Di María
78' Lisandro Martinez is on for Di Maria with just over 10 minutes left.
78' Argentina have kept clean sheets in each of their last three matches - a run that goes back to a 1-1 draw with Ecuador in late March.
76' An injury to Brown will allow both sides to make changes, with the full-back limping off the pitch for further treatment before hopefully re-entering the match.
74' De Paul and Lo Celso combine in midfield but the former is unable to slip a pass through the lines for the run of Messi, as Lowe comes across to intercept the ball at the crucial moment.
R. De Paul
A. Mac Allister
71' A change in the Argentina midfield sees De Paul come on for Mac Allister.
A. Gray
S. Nicholson
70' Nicholson makes way for Gray with 20 minutes left in the contest.
68' Messi is involved for the first time tonight, dropping his shoulder to get past Damion Lowe and Brown before firing an acute-angle strike that forces Blake to turn it behind for a corner.
66' Bell drives forward on an enterprising run from his position at left-back but his eventual pass played into the penalty area is put just out of Antonio’s reach - with the striker straining every sinew in an unsuccessful attempt to turn the ball goalwards.
64' After a brief pause related to a pitch invader - the referee plays a drop-ball in the middle of the pitch and allows play to restart with Argentina in possession.
62' Three players currently on the pitch featured the last time Argentina and Jamaica played (2015), with Messi and Di Maria playing for the Albiceleste and Mariappa featuring for the Reggae Boyz.
60' Lo Celso goes down holding his face just outside the Jamaica penalty area after a collision with Damion Lowe but the referee sees nothing wrong as he allows play to continue.
58' Bailey is again sent to the ground by Tagliafico, with the left-back this time stepping across his opponent after the ball had been played. It’s a free-kick for Jamaica just inside Argentina’s half.
L. Messi
Lautaro Martínez
56' Messi steps onto the pitch greeted by raucous applause as he's introduced for Lautaro Martinez.
E. Fernández
G. Rodríguez
55' Fernandez comes on for Rodriguez with 34 minutes left to go in the game.
54' Bailey curls a free-kick from the left wing into the penalty area looking for Antonio but Romero does well to read the danger and head it away.
52' Mac Allister works the ball to Lautaro Martinez with a lovely first-time pass into the penalty area but the Inter striker is unable to hit the target after taking an initial touch to set himself.
50' Bailey is not allowed to cut inside from the right but he does well to keep possession ahead of three pressing Argentina defenders, shifting the ball from his left to his right before passing it back down the line for Brown.
48' A round of applause goes up around the stadium as Messi throws on a bib and looks to get warmed up for the first time tonight. With the World Cup so close there’s little reason to risk the talisman from the start but perhaps he will get to stretch his legs later in the match.
46' Argentina get the match restarted from the kick-off!
Scaloni will look to make a number of changes as the match wears on, with the World Cup less than two months away. Young squad members like Almada and Fernandez will almost certainly get a look to prove their quality in a bid to make the tournament, while Jamaica could look to shore things up in defence and hit on the counter, with former Watford and Burnley striker Gray available from the bench.
An entertaining first half at Red Bull Arena comes to a close with Argentina leading 1-0, thanks to Alvarez’s close-range finish after 13 minutes. The Albiceleste once again looked to maintain possession and draw their opponents on to them, with Jamaica obliging and eagerly pressing in the opening stages. The goal came through a bit of individual quality from Lautaro Martinez, dribbling past his man before finding his team-mate in front of goal. While Scaloni’s side have been dominant, there is reason for optimism on the side of the Reggae Boyz, who have been organised and eager in defence while competent when in possession.
45' The fourth official indicates one minute will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
43' Bailey is down on his back near the touchline after a collision with Tagliafico which has left the Aston Villa winger worse for wear. With just two minutes to go in the half he’ll look to see out the period before re-evaluating at the interval.
41' With less than five minutes to go in the half Jamaica have acquitted themselves well, often moving the ball around sharply in an attempt to find the open man. It hasn’t resulted in clear goal-scoring opportunities but Hallgrimsson should be relatively pleased with what he’s seen.
39' Jamaica turn a good bit of possession in their own half into a real chance, with Brown sending a pass down the left wing for Bailey. The Aston Villa winger pulls out a clever trick to sit Tagliafico down but his eventual cross is easily cleared by Otamendi.
37' Argentina have met Jamaica four previous times, with the Albiceleste winning on each occasion. The recent matchups have been tight with just a single goal separating the two in 2010 and 2015, after 5-0 and 6-0 thrashings previously.
35' Play is brought to a temporary halt as Romero remains down holding his left ankle inside the centre-circle. He looks to be okay but it was a dangerous sliding challenge from Morrison that brought him down, with the Jamaica number 10 already on a yellow card.
33' Emiliano Martinez is called into action for the first time all match, striding towards the penalty spot to catch a Johnson cross hit from deep in midfield.
31' Mac Allister’s corner bounces dangerously inside the six-yard box but Rodriguez is unable to volley it home at the back post, sending his shot over the crossbar.
29' A promising Argentina attack comes to an end as Lo Celso is deemed to have handled the ball 18 yards from goal - giving Jamaica a chance to clear their lines from a free-kick.
27' Di Maria cuts inside ahead of Bell looking to test the left-back further but the eventual shot from the Juventus winger is caught easily by Blake.
25' Di Maria is given a pocket of space to operate just outside the Jamaica penalty area but he looks to beat one last defender instead of firing a shot - allowing Bell to win back possession.
23' Mac Allister puts the ensuing corner into the penalty area but it’s beaten away by a leaping Blake.
21' Alvarez again looks to create a chance from the left wing but his dangerous cross is promptly turned behind by the head of Brown.
19' GREAT CHANCE! Alvarez drives down the left and cuts it back inside for Lo Celso, who has the time to take two touches before curling a shot that fails to turn back inwards on its way behind for a goal-kick.
17' Bailey puts two hands on Tagliafico’s back in an attempt to slow down the full-back in midfield - sending him to the ground to win a free-kick that’s taken short by Rodriguez.
15' Johnson looks to drive a free-kick into the Argentina penalty area from well over 40 yards out, forcing an acrobatic overhead clearance which sends the ball back down the pitch.
Lautaro Martínez
13' It's a delightful assist for Lautaro Martinez, who gets by his marker easily before presenting Alvarez with an unmissable chance.
J. Álvarez
13' LOVELY GOAL! 1-0 ARGENTINA! Tagliafico steps inside to find Lautaro Martinez unmarked on the edge of the penalty area, with the Inter striker immediately turning to get into the box. He produces a lovely bit of skill to take himself wide - getting past Damion Lowe in the process - before cutting it back to Alvarez for the easy tap-in finish!
12' Argentina are given a second free-kick in midfield in quick succession, this time after Damion Lowe is called for charging through the back of Lautaro Martinez. Jamaica are working their hardest to close down the man in possession at all times, though sometimes a little overzealously.
R. Morrison
Yellow Card
10' It takes just 10 minutes for the first yellow card to be produced, with Morrison booked for a late two-footed tackle on Rodriguez in midfield.
8' Di Maria takes advantage of a giveaway in midfield, striding into the penalty area with possession before laying a pass forward for Montiel. It’s poorly hit however and gives the full-back no chance before rolling behind for a corner.
6' Di Maria’s corner is whipped into the near post looking for a deflection but a brave Blake charges off his line to punch the ball away with two hands.
5' A lovely turn in midfield by Nicholson keeps possession for Jamaica and advances the attacking move through midfield but Antonio is unable to get the ball out from under his feet at the crucial moment - allowing Argentina to clear.
3' Argentina have started cautiously, spending most of the opening minutes knocking the ball around in defence looking to invite their opponents on to them. The Albiceleste will be hoping to exploit the space in behind with neat passing triangles exposed by the press.
1' Jamaica get the match underway from the kick-off!
Only Mariappa keeps his place as Jamaica make 10 changes to the side that earned a 1-1 draw with Qatar on August 26. Blake starts in goal while Damion Lowe, Brown and Bell feature alongside the aforementioned Mariappa. A duo in central midfield of Morrison and Johnson play between a pair of Premier League wingers in De Cordova-Reid and Bailey while Nicholson and West Ham’s Antonio lead the line.
Argentina make eight changes from the side that beat Honduras 3-0 last time out, with Scaloni prioritising the rotation of his squad. Emiliano Martinez replaces Rulli between the posts while Otamendi, Romero and Montiel are brought in ahead of Pezzella, Lisandro Martinez and Molina. Two changes in midfield see Rodriguez and Mac Allister deputise for Paredes and De Paul while in attack, Alvarez and Di Maria give Messi and Alejandro Gomez a rest.
JAMAICA SUBS: Curtis Tilt, Andre Gray, Jahmali White, Kevon Lambert, Ricardo Thomas, Jamal Lowe, Jahmoi Topey, Kemar Foster, Kaheem Parris, Maliek Howell, Dillon Barnes.
JAMAICA XI (4-4-2): Andre Blake; Adrian Mariappa, Damion Lowe, Javain Brown, Amari’i Bell; Bobby De Cordova-Reid, Daniel Johnson, Ravel Morrison, Leon Bailey; Michail Antonio, Shamar Nicholson.
ARGENTINA SUBS: Facundo Medina, Leandro Paredes, Enzo Fernandez, Lionel Messi, Angel Correa, Franco Armani, Joaquin Correa, Lisandro Martinez, Nehuen Perez, Thiago Almada, German Pezzella, Geronimo Rulli, Nahuel Molina, Rodrigo De Paul.
ARGENTINA XI (4-3-3): Emiliano Martinez; Nicolas Tagliafico, Nicolas Otamendi, Cristian Romero, Gonzalo Montiel; Giovani Lo Celso, Guido Rodriguez, Alexis Mac Allister; Julian Alvarez, Lautaro Martinez, Angel Di Maria.
With 10 minutes to go before kick-off, let’s take a look at how the two sides are lining up - starting with Argentina!
Heimir Hallgrimsson takes charge of his third match as coach of Jamaica, having lost and drawn to Morocco and Qatar in his previous pair of friendlies. The Reggae Boyz will be looking to shape up ahead of continued CONCACAF Nations League action in March 2023, with 2026 World Cup qualifying on the horizon as well.
Argentina extended their unbeaten run to 34 matches last time out with a comfortable 3-0 win over Honduras and will look for the same result tonight in New Jersey. Lionel Scaloni’s side looked imperious on Friday and with just two friendlies left before the World Cup kicks off, the Albiceleste will treat this preparatory fixture with the utmost importance.
