Nigeria supporters have been left disappointed after Napoli forward Victor Osimhen was ruled out of the international friendly against Portugal at Jose Alvalade Stadium on Thursday.
The 23-year-old Osimhen was among the players summoned by coach Jose Peseiro for the game but on Monday it emerged he will not be available for selection owing to an injury.
Cremonese striker Cyriel Dessers was called up to replace Osimhen while Chidozie Awaziem took the place of injured Orlando Pirates defender Olisa Ndah.
During the last Fifa break in September, Osimhen was summoned for duty for the friendly against Algeria but he later pulled out citing an injury. Super Eagles fans have descended on social media to question why Osimhen is again injured whenever it is time to play for his country.
You will never see Sadio [Mane] do this. Victor Osimhen is starting to irritate Nigerians, especially with this miracle injury. It's not his fault, there's nobody to displace him for now, maybe that's why he is starting to feel larger than life. So annoying. - Olusola Oseni
Osimhen is becoming irritating, he needs to make an effort to be here or else we just have to move on from him. - Israel
Osimhen is not interested in playing for Nigeria. Always getting injured whenever it is time for playing for his country. @victorosimhen9 kindly note we support you so much in Napoli shirts but you have failed to turn up for us in Nigeria shirts. = @nedu4shut
When and where did Victor Osimhen sustained injury? Or did he play another game after the weekend? - @miracle_solly
Oshimen played for Napoli over the weekend, that was their last match before the World Cup break, no other training/match played. So how did he sustain injury? I guess in his sleep. - Michael Ese
Osimhen is now becoming bigger than Nigeria, that is how it starts, when did he get injured? - Duru Chigozie
Osimhen issue is getting out of hand, when did he got injury? - Eze Osita Stephen
I think is high time this Osimhen of a guy decide, Napoli or Nigeria. So that the Super Eagles coach can start working and planning with a new first choice striker. - Samson Ishaya
Trust me, even the day Nigeria will have a real match, Osimhen is still going to disappoint the coach, so it is time now for the coach to start using new players to avoid it being difficult to find who to replace him when that happens. - Olibenz Chinonso
How can Victor Osimhen be like this to the country that gave him the platform to shine? Well I don't know if his injury is true but most of these white guys play for their country. To me Osimhen lacks attitude, he is just like an errand boy for money sake enjoy while it lasts. - Beacon Victor
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis at it again, always preventing Osimhen from representing the Super Eagles. - Chinedu Neduboi Joseph
Blatant lie, I know nothing is wrong with him, His club probably doesn't want him to play. - Dprince97
I don't understand, did he get injured on his way home? In the end this guy will end up playing just about 30 to 40 games for Nigeria in his entire career. This lie must stop. You made your way to the top through the national team, The least you can do is pay back. - Raymond Maashin
This guy is becoming a star in the near future and his country will need his service. I hope his club will consider that because this injury thing is a lie. - Ahmed Sadiq
Lies, he has been playing before now, when it is time to play for Nigeria, he now has an injury. Lies. - Thomas
Guys the match isn't that important, it's not like the World Cup. What we are playing is a friendly why risk your chance of winning the league to play for Nigeria? Victor has got nothing to prove, he plays for the country when it matters, a beg let the boy rest - @macaiahnes
Again!!!! If NFF are not capable of getting our best players on board they should quit. What a cheap excuse, serious action needs to be taken against Napoli because Osimhen is ready anytime to play for Nigeria. = Austin Emife
Osimhen isn't injured, he played the full 90 minutes for Napoli against Udinese. It's time NFF should stop inviting him and give the chance to another striker. Terem Moffi is actually doing well. I don't know why he's not invited. - AZ Lucklins
