Themba Zwane and Teboho Mokoena were Mamelodi Sundowns’ top performers against Orlando Pirates in Saturday’s MTN8 semi-final encounter at the Orlando Stadium.
There was little between the two sides and not much in the way of clear-cut chances though it was Masandawana keeper Ronwen Williams who was called on more often to make saves.
Despite the lack of goals, it was an absorbing and entertaining encounter between what are surely the two best teams in the country at the moment.
Had a couple of shaky moments early on with some high balls – including an effort from Monnapule Saleng which hit the bar. But he recovered well in the second half with outstanding saves to deny Zakhele Lepasa and Kermit Erasmus.
Defended very well and got into some great attacking positions, however, his final ball was poor on several occasions.
Caught out by Lepasa inside his own box early in the game but he improved as the afternoon went on and was impressive in the air.
Cool, clam and collected he had a commanding game and showed great pace on one occasion when chasing down the speedy Deon Hotto.
Grew into the game after a stuttering start, but never offered the kind of options going forward which we know he can.
A driving, energetic performance from the Bafana Bafana midfielder, Mokoena was all over ther park and involved in nearly every aspect of play.
One of his least effective showings for Sundowns, Jali was subbed around the hour mark after being overshadowed by Bucs debutant Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo.
Like Jali, Maema had one of his less productive showings in a Sundowns jersey as he struggled against the likes of Olisa Ndah and Nkosinathi Sibisi.
Zwane carried on from where he left off last weekend with Bafana Bafana as he put in an excellent creative and energetic performance. The veteran attacker had several deft touches which on another day could have led to goals for his teammates.
Toiled hard on a rare start and had a couple of turns and runs at the Pirates defenders while also battling hard to hold the ball up under pressure from Pirates’ big central defenders.
One of his more memorable moments came when he helped clear his own box late on. For the PSL’s most prolific striker it was a quiet afternoon, partly due to a lack of real service and also because of Pirates’ outstanding defence.
Was willing to get stuck in physically but couldn’t really craft any openings in and around the Pirates box.
The Uruguayan made a big impact; one deft touch in particular stood out when he nearly set up Allende.
The Bafana international failed to catch the eye after replacing Jali for the last 35 minutes.
The 21-year-old enjoyed a lively seven-minute cameo and briefly looked as if he might be the one to find a way to break the deadlock.
Wasn’t involved much after replacing Mudau in the 87th minute.
